St. Mary Catholic School Does it Again!

St. Mary Catholic School in Capreol had another spectacular “Jump Rope for Heart” event raising $4,135.98 for the Heart and Stroke Foundation. In the past twelve years, St. Mary School has raised $38,017.80.

During this year’s event, eleven students individually raised over $100 and three students raised over $200 each. Jump Rope for Heart took place during Catholic Education Week. Some of the challenges included who could skip the fastest, who could skip the longest and who had the most creative routine.

Many thanks to the parents and the Capreol community for their tremendous support and encouragement over the years in this fundraising effort which benefits so many.

Power of Young Minds Unleashed at SCDSB’s Annual Science Fair

Rossella Bagnato, Interim Director of Education for the Sudbury Catholic District School Board visited St. Francis Catholic School on Thursday to view a number of interesting and unique projects at the Board’s annual Science Fair.

Mrs. Bagnato reviewed Cortnie Pinard’s and Maddie Dempster’s Science Fair Project, In A Cat’s Eye. The purpose of the project was to determine “why cats pupils change and what effect, if any, does this change have on their vision.” The girls’ hypothesis was that “the beams of light are directed into the cat’s eyes and change the size of the pupils.” The young scientists also informed Mrs. Bagnato that cats can see 90 percent better than humans can in the dark and they can also see in colour, except red.

Zachary Sarmatiuk, a Grade 7 student at St. Francis Catholic School made a presentation to Vice Principal Cassandra MacGregor and Rossella Bagnato regarding the effect of “winglets on airplanes.” The purpose of Zachary’s experiment was to determine if the “winglets” placed on tips of the wings of three different paper airplanes (at various angles) would increase the length of their flight. Zachary’s results indicated that with a wider-winged plane, “winglets” impacted the distance of flight. It is important to note as Zachary was quit to point out that “this experiment was only performed on paper air planes and it really depends on how good a thrower you are.”

Zachary gave special thanks to his little brother Owen who let him use his airplane book for the Science Fair project.

Twenty one of the 150 Science Fair projects were selected to advance to the Regional Science Fair that will take place at Laurentian University on March 31 and April 1, 2007.

Congratulations to all our winners, and good luck at the Regional Science Fair on March 31 and April 1, 2007 at Laurentian University!

SCDSB Students Winners in my!sudbury Campaign

Jenna Kennelly a Grade 4 student from St. Theresa Catholic School and Christina Rorison a Grade 1 student from St. John Catholic School were two of nine students to be presented with 1st and 2nd place prizes in the my!sudbury / oui!sudbury Colouring and Essay Contest. The awards were presented to the students by City of Greater Sudbury Mayor John Rodriguez at a ceremony held at the Valley East Citizen Service Centre/Library.

In November 2006, students from Greater Sudbury elementary and secondary schools were invited to participate in the my!sudbury / oui!sudbury campaign contest and share their pride for the community.

“Through this contest it became evident that the youth of Greater Sudbury have a tremendous sense of pride for their community,” said Greater Sudbury Mayor John Rodriguez. “Many essay entries and pictures depicted our beautiful landscapes, attractions, schools and friendly neighbourhoods. These youth truly feel that ‘my!sudbury’ is their own.”

my!sudbury oui ! sudbury is more then a slogan – it is a campaign that gives all members of the community the pride to act as ambassadors for Greater Sudbury. The campaign assists in building a foundation for community cohesiveness in order to attract business investment, recruit and retain professionals, promote tourism and encourage internal investment.
