St. Benedict teacher Giuseppe Politi wins Community Builders Award

Giuseppe was awarded the Community Builders Award for Sports and Recreation. He had an outstanding career as a soccer player before becoming a qualified soccer coach. He is the boys’ coach for St. Benedict, head coach of the women’s and men’s programs at Cambrian College, the head coach at the Greater Sudbury Soccer Club, a coach developer with the Ontario Soccer Association and he coaches at the Northern Soccer Academy. He says he believes in Sudbury soccer and in raising the bar of the sport in the city. He acknowledges he is highly invested so, of course, he advocates strongly for a soccer centre, including a bubble or dome so local players have the same advantages as others across the province during the winter months. He gives a nod to former coaches, players’ parents, and officials, not wanting to miss anyone who played a role in his success. He specifically mentions his mom, Antonietta. “If I didn’t have my mother as my #1 support system, this soccer thing never would have happened.”

Congratulations and well-done Giuseppe.

St. Francis Flames Wear Yellow for Daffodil Campaign

St. Francis students and staff wore yellow to kick off the start of the Canadian Cancer Society’s Daffodil Campaign in April. The daffodil is a symbol of strength and courage in the fight againstt cancer. Since the 1950s, bright yellow daffodils have arrived in communities across Canada to mark the beginning of Daffodil Month in April. Yellow daffodil stickers were worn at the elementary school to show support for Canadians living with cancer. A cheque for $502.00 was presented to Ms. Burns and Ms. Crispo from the Canadian Cancer Society who graciously attended the school’s assembly to speak to students. The cheque was presented on behalf of the families, students and staff of St. Francis School who made the donation possible. Cancer has touched many of the St. Francis families, friends, staff and even students in some way. The school’s event organizer for the Daffodil Campaign, Ms. Graziella Visentin, was thrilled with the support shown by the school’s families, students and staff for this worthwhile cause. By sharing of ourselves and helping those around us, we are, in essence, practising Christian stewardship, which is the school’s virtue for the month of April. Each year the amount raised increases and the school hopes to continue with this beneficial fundraiser to help cancer patients in our community.

Board celebrates faith community on PA Day

On Nov 7 2014, the Sudbury Catholic District School Board came together as a faith community. The PA Day began with a mass celebrated by His Excellency Bishop Jean-Louis Plouffe and many priests from the area. The day continued with the unveiling of the SudburyCatholicSchools mental health strategy – “Sudbury Catholic Schools… where your well-being matters”. The logo for the mental health strategy is a combination of the sun and a dandelion. The dandelion is regarded as a weed, despite it’s many beneficial health properties. A weed is to dandelion as words like crazy are to mental health. The warm colour and sun-like qualities promote positivity, brightness and growth. At the centre is a cross to symbolize how our faith is at the centre of all that we do.

The staff was also addressed by a current student who shared their own struggles. Student Rilie spoke from her heart and helped the staff understand what a caring adult can do to help students. The afternoon continued with Psychologist Adele Robinson whose topic was Emotional Coaching: Supporting the Emotional Health of Youth in Schools. SCDSB wants to thank each and every staff member who helps make a difference in the lives of our students everyday! Sudbury Catholic Schools… where your well-being matters
