St. John Catholic School Launches Waste Reduction Pilot Project

The Sudbury Catholic District School Board is pleased to announce that St. John Catholic School has been selected by the City of Greater Sudbury to participate in a school-based recycling project. Prior to the launch of the pilot project, only paper and cardboard products were being recycled at the school. As a result of this new initiative, students are now able to recycle the same waste products as they do at home in one convenient blue box without the need to sort! Some of the new products students can recycle include: plastic sandwich bags, milk cartons, and juice boxes-something schools have a lot of!

Madame Raymond’s Grade 3/4 French Immersion class has taken on a leadership role in helping to organize and support the project. Students are responsible for collecting waste reduction data and publically charting the results in the school’s front entrance on a weekly basis. St. John Catholic School is hoping to reduce the amount of waste sent to the local landfill site by at least 50 percent through this new initiative.

The Grade 3/4 French Immersion class is also working to integrate the project into all aspects of the curriculum from Mathematics to Social Studies. Further, a Waste Reduction Committee organized by teachers and run by students has been created with the purpose of raising awareness about the importance of recycling amongst students and staff alike.

St. John Catholic School is the third SCDSB school to participate in the City of Greater Sudbury’s recycling “pilot project” joining sister schools, St. Paul Catholic School and St. Charles College who embarked upon this project in June 2007.

Dr. Janna-Marie Doni Visits St. Mary Catholic School

Dr. Janna-Marie Doni, a Chiropractor at the Capreol Chiropractic Clinic, recently visited St. Mary Catholic School to speak to the students on a variety of health issues. Dr. Doni’s presentation to the class focussed on how the body works and how the brain sends messages down the spinal cord and out through the nerves to all parts of the body.

Students actively participated in the presentation, answering questions and performing exercises to improve body posture. The students learned three ways in which to keep a spine healthy: good posture, carry a backpack properly (pack it light, wear it right), and regular chiropractic care.

Primary students were also provided with a colouring page highlighting the “do’s and don’ts” of carrying backpacks. Older students were given a sheet entitled “Lighten Your Load,” re-enforcing the fact that the weight of a backpack should be a maximum of 10 percent of a person’s body weight for students in Kindergarten to Grade 8.

Dr. Janna’s final thoughts for the students were: “I wish you a lifetime of happiness and great health.” For more information on these and other topics please visit http://www.chiropractic.on.ca.

St. Theresa Catholic School Students Fit for the Challenge

St. Theresa Catholic School is the winner of the Sudbury Catholic District School Board’s 2006-2007 Fitness Challenge. The goal of the program is to lower the resting and exercise heart rates of the Board’s students over the course of the school year. Staff and students in the Junior Division participated in this program under the supervision of Mr. John Tarini, Coordinator of the Fitness Challenge for the Sudbury Catholic District School Board.

The heart rates of the students were measured three times during the 2006-2007 school year. Throughout the year students participated in various activities such as intramural sports, outdoor exercises and the “School Fit Program” to improve their physical fitness. The school whose students displayed the “lowest average increase in heart rate” from the “resting to the exercise mode” was deemed the winner of the Fitness Challenge.

Students from St. Theresa Catholic School received a plaque and a small token of appreciation from Sudbury Catholic District School Board Vice-Chair, George Middleton during a recent board meeting for winning the Fitness Challenge.

Sudbury Community Foundation Sponsors St. Michael School Seedling Event

Staff and students from St. Michael Catholic School are making the City of Greater Sudbury a better place to live thanks to the donation of sprouts from Deborah Viisimaa and The Sudbury Community Foundation. “The sprouts” were distributed to each child and staff member to be taken home to be nurtured and planted at a later date.

“By taking part in this sprouts project, we are officially champions for the environment,” stated school principal, Sandra St. Denis.

Through the sprouts project the students learned that “each tree that they planted will grow to consume harmful carbon dioxide and give back the oxygen required to sustain life.”
