Bishop Alexander Carter Students Give Back to the Community

Every year Bishop Alexander Carter hockey players tie up their skates and head to the Centennial Arena for an all out “Battle of the Sexes” on the hockey rink. The annual tradition presents a great opportunity to build a sense of community by involving Bishop Carter’s feeder schools, St. Anne, St. Charles and St. Mary Catholic elementary schools. Students from these schools look forward to participating in this event as it is not only a lot of fun but also gives them some insight as to what life in high school is really like.

The atmosphere of the afternoon hockey game is always packed with excitement as the Bishop Carter students are given the opportunity to buy out of classes so they may attend the event. Bishop Carter Catholic Secondary School makes a point of recognizing every student who participates in athletics during this day and also takes this unique opportunity to acknowledge all the school’s teams, coaches and players in true Gator Spirit.

Proceeds from the event and money raised from other community basketball tournaments were donated to the Northeastern Ontario Regional Cancer Research Centre this year. Bishop Carter Catholic School teacher, Jean Gilles Laroque and Student Council President, Matt Harris presented a $500 cheque to Jacqueline Dell for Cancer Research.

Betty Boult, Renowned Speaker, Author to Visit Sudbury

Motivational speaker and author, Betty Boult will be in the City of Greater Sudbury on Wednesday, May 21, 2008 to speak to students, parents, families and members of the educational sector regarding her most recent book 176 Ways to Involve Parents.

Dr. Boult’s presentation will focus on the practical, doable activities and ideas that enhance student learning by involving parents in a respectful, meaningful, and productive way. Dr. Boult has written the ultimate guide for helping school administrators and teachers to create an effective partnership with parents. Educational stakeholders, parents, teacher, and administrators will benefit from its content.

The presentation will take place at 6:30 p.m. in the Inco Cavern at Science North followed by refreshments and a book a signing engagement.

This special event has been sponsored by the Sudbury Catholic District School Board’s Regional Parent Involvement Committee (RPIC). Admission is free.

St. Charles College to Present ‘The Wizard of Oz’

Sudbury Catholic Board Introduces “The Incredible Years” Program

As part of a grant to deliver positive student behaviour programs, Academic Consultants with Sudbury Catholic Schools introduced an innovative student behavioural program termed The Incredible Years. The focus is on training teacher mentors and group leaders in strengthening preventive classroom management strategies. This new program also serves to promote children’s prosocial behaviour and school readiness (reading skills) in order to reduce classroom aggression and non-cooperation with peers and teachers.

In addition, the program highlights ways by which teachers can effectively collaborate with parents to support their school involvement and promote consistency from home to school.

The Incredible Years program developed by Dr. Carolyn Webster-Stratton is a research-based, proven effective program that has been running internationally for several years with much success.

Classroom management training is a practical strategy filled approach, which gives much insight into working with students who are disobedient, highly aggressive, inattentive and hyperactive.

The Sudbury Catholic Schools’ Incredible Years team consisting of Lucie Cullen, Diana Bozzo-Salvador (Principals), Kim Taylor-Horeck (Attendance Counsellor) and Alice Desormeaux (Teacher) will be making a presentation to the Board later this year to highlight the positive impact of this program.

Sudbury Catholic Schools Vice-Chair Elected as Provincial President

Paula Peroni, Vice-Chair of the Sudbury Catholic District School Board has been elected as President of the Ontario Catholic Schools Trustees Association (OCSTA) at its recent Annual General Meeting (AGM) held in Niagara Falls this past weekend.

Mrs. Peroni was first elected as a Trustee for the Sudbury Catholic District School Board in 1997, serving as Chair of the Board for five years and as Vice-Chair for three years. Having held the position as Regional Director of the OCSTA for five years and two years as its First Vice-President,Mrs. Peroni is no stranger to the challenges that continue to face Catholic Education at the local, provincial and national level.

Mrs. Peroni assumed her new role as President of the OCSTA on April 26, 2008. “The Ontario Catholic School Trustees Association is an organization with a long list of accomplishments and successes to its credit and it is vital to the continued existence of Catholic Education in Ontario,” stated Peroni. “Catholic Education has been and will continue to be a Good News story in this province and I look forward to working with our many partners to continue to grow this very fine educational tradition.”

The Ontario Catholic Schools Association defines its role as the guardian of Catholic Education which has been an integral part of Ontario’s history for 160 years. For more than 75 of those years, the Ontario Catholic School Trustees’ Association (OCSTA) has safeguarded and promoted the interests of publicly funded Catholic education in Ontario. As the sole representative of Ontario’s 29 Catholic District School Boards and five Catholic school authorities, OCSTA represents the needs and perspectives of Catholic school boards to both the provincial and federal governments.

The OCSTA is managed by a board of directors made up of 16 Catholic school trustees, representing regions from across the province. Catholic schools serve the educational and spiritual development needs of more than 600,000 students and their families in Ontario.

The election of Peroni marks the first occasion since 1964 that an individual from the City of Greater Sudbury has held the position of President of the OCSTA.

Director’s Message: Catholic Education Week 2008

Catholic Education Week takes place this year from April 27 to May 2, 2008. During this week the Catholic Community celebrates the unique and distinctive contribution that Catholic Schools make to our students, our community and our Province. Catholic Education Week is a welcome opportunity to celebrate the Mission of our Catholic Schools as they strive to integrate the Gospel values of Jesus Christ in every aspect of the school’s curriculum.

This year’s theme, “We are Called” celebrates the fact that each of us has been called by God, and not just called as a collective, but called by name. “I have called you and you are mine.” (Isaiah 43:1) Amid life’s joy’s and sorrows, its challenges and doubts, these words can be a source of inspiration and a reaffirmation of faith.

Five sub-themes, one for each of the five days of Catholic Education Week help us to understand the rich meaning of this year’s theme.

Day 1…to Act Justly
Day 2…to Love Tenderly
Day 3…to Walk Humbly
Day 4…to Serve Generously
Day 5…to Live Peacefully

Catholic Education Week 2008 begins on a Sunday to highlight the partnership that remains the foundation of Catholic Education. We particularly want to underline the relationship of Catholic Schools with the broader Church community, especially with the parishes that remain the centre of the worshiping faith community.

Throughout Catholic Education Week, we encourage students, parents, teachers and staff to take pride in their 160-year plus tradition that has enriched generations through the continued support of all our Catholic partners.

Sudbury Catholic Schools Launches Specialist High Skills Major

Rick Bartolucci, MPP for the City of Greater Sudbury joined George Middleton, Chair of the Sudbury Catholic District School Board, Catherine McCullough, Director of Education, Trustees, Senior Administration, students, staff and many of the Board’s partners in education in celebrating the launch of the Specialist High Skills Major (Health and Wellness) program recently at St. Charles College.

The Specialist High Skills Major program (SHSM) enables students to customize their high school experience to suit their interests and talents, and prepare for a successful post secondary transition to apprenticeship training, college, university or employment while meeting the requirements of the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD).

Sudbury Catholic through the Student Success Initiative has implemented the SHSM (Health and Wellness) program at St. Charles College to provide students interested in health sciences an opportunity to gain knowledge, skills and experience in a health care setting. SHSM students will be exposed to facets of health science at the post secondary level as they participate in the dual credit program through Cambrian College. Sudbury Catholic has also been fortunate to partner with the Sudbury Regional Hospital, Northern Ontario School of Medicine, St. Joseph’s Villa, Science North, Extendicare Falconbridge, Cambrian College, the Northeastern Ontario Regional Cancer Centre and numerous private community partners who will assist in providing experiential learning cooperative educational opportunities for the Board’s students.
