“I know I am a small person, but why do you need to make me feel smaller?

A special pre-screening of a bullying documentary took place today at St. Charles College on November 21, 2012 for one thousand students.

The movie Bully was featured at Cinefest in September. It is not being released in American theatres until May 30th, 2013.

Teachers involved in student council and the school leadership class contacted the film company about showcasing the film to the student body before its release to the public and they agreed.

The director of the film, Lee Hirsch was bullied as a child and follows the stories of two families dealing with the deaths of their children who were victims of bullying and took their own lives.

Students at St. Charles College also heard a first hand account from a senior student who was a victim of ethnic bullying in the past.

Justin Trac bravely shared his story of bullying and urged others to stand-up for what is right and just to make other people’s high school experiences that much better.

He said the powerful question that he used when he finally stood up this bully: “I know I am a small person, but why do you need to make me feel smaller?”

Each student in the audience also received a wristband with the slogan “delete” the drama.

Trent Cull Visits St. Andrew Catholic Elementary School

The School Improvement Plan for St. Andrew School under Catholic Care and Concern states that every month visitors from the community will be invited to the school to speak to the students about career opportunities and the importance of staying in school. This month Mr. Trent Cull, father of Wyatt and Gabe and coach of the Sudbury Wolves, visited our school to share his dreams with our students. Mr. Cull told the students that you have to work hard, stay in school and always dream”big”. The students were very interested in his hockey career…where he played, where he coached, what does coaching entail and “What’s up with the Wolves?” Pictured are Mr. Cull with his sons Wyatt and Gabe and Shrisha a new student to our school and our country.

Take Our Kids To Work Day at St. Benedict

St. Benedict Catholic Secondary students proudly participated in the Take Our Kids to Work Day on November 7th, 2012. These students got to learn first hand what skills are required in today’s work environment. But before they went out to the workplace, Monica. Dailey, co-op education teacher explained to them the importance of students rights and responsibilities in a safe work environment.

POSITIVE LIVING SKILLS with Terry Orlick Ph.D – November 13, 2012

POSITIVE LIVING SKILLS with Terry Orlick Ph.D., presentation at St. Raphael School, Nov.13th, 6:30-7:30 pm
Promoting PEACEFUL SCHOOLS: Enjoy the ‘simple joys of life’

As part of Peaceful Schools and building healthy relationships, living a life of joy and happiness can be achieved when we learn to think positive and embrace the simple joys and happy highlights in our lives. This allows us to live life to our true potential.

Charlie Large, SK student at St. John, is holding a Spaghetti Toes CD and a Highlight clicker. These are tools that Terry Orlick PhD, has developed for children. St. John School will be introducing a special evening, with guest speaker, Terry Orlick, PhD. on Nov.13th, from 6:30-7:30 pm. at St. Raphael School. The evening session is meant for parents/guardian, educators, coaches, any adult who works with children.

The CD allows children to learn how to relax during stressful times in their lives whether at home or at school.

The highlight clicker is a great way to help children and youth feel happier, less stressed and more confident within themselves when they CLICK happy moments in their lives. The clicker keeps track of all the happy moments, such as being thankful for the sunshine, enjoying time with a friend, having fun in a game, learning at school etc….
Research demonstrates that Highlight Clickers helps children and adults of all ages become more positive, more relaxed, more joyful, and more focused on the good things in themselves, in others and the contexts they are in.

When you begin to look for, find, embrace and appreciate the simplest Highlight or simplest joys in every day, not only do you feel better, you also reduce the unnecessary stress, worry and negativity in your life.

Pumpkins, Pumpkins, Pumpkins at St. Charles

JK/SKR students from St. Charles Catholic Elementary School have started an inquiry all about pumpkins.  It all started when their teacher, Amy Malafarina, brought in some mini pumpkins as a decoration in the class.  Students began to ask questions, so they decided to do an inquiry.  They prepared questions along with the daycare children in the school, and set out to get the answers.

Students wondered such things as: if the seeds were the same size in different pumpkins; if the inside was the same colour as the outside of a squash; if a spaghetti squash really has spaghetti inside; if the bumpy ones were bumpy inside too, and many more.  On Wednesday, October 24th, parent volunteers came and helped cut up the various sized pumpkins and squash to get to the answers.  Most of the questions were answered and students made many more discoveries than they thought and new questions were created.

Cardinals Share Their ‘Goodness’ with the Sudbury Food Bank

The line ‘Teach me goodness’ is an integral part of the St. Charles College motto. This week, the students at the school learned about goodness and shared the fruits of their labour.

The secondary school students, coupled with children in the feeder schools canvassed together for the largest school food drive in the city. The goal was to raise 60 000 cans for the Sudbury Food Bank and the Cardinals surpassed that goal with a new all-time total of 125 080 cans. This is the single biggest contribution in history to the Sudbury Food Bank.

The secondary school has hosted a food drive for twenty-seven years. It is supported by students at St. Bernadette, St. Raphael, Pius XII, St. Andrew, St. David and St Paul and St. John.

Bishop ACCSS Student Jumps to New Heights

Bishop Alexander Carter Catholic Secondary School student Leah Blanchette is quite a busy girl. Not only is she a dedicated student, she is also quite an accomplished equestrian whose dedication to her sport takes up quite a bit of her time outside of school as well. According to her mother, Kate Blanchette, Leah is a quiet girl and “knowing Leah, not many realize her accomplishments as she is so modest about her success.”

Leah completed on the “A” circuit national level the past season and that has meant a lot of time away from home and school with her coach Cathy Inch. Leah and her horse Jinjovan AKA “Joe” train out of Foothills Farm in Chelmsford. Most days involve at least 10 to 12 hours of practice, or showing in the ring and Leah spends at a minimum 5 days a week with Joe and her coach.

Leah and Joe have qualified for the Royal Winter fair, which is the Canadian Equestrian championships, to be held in Toronto starting Nov 2nd. Not only have they qualified, but they have managed to be pinned in all 4 of their divisions (Junior Hunter, A equitation, Junior Medal, and Jump Canada Medal) and they will go to nationals with finishing their qualifying season overall 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place standing. The Royal Winter fair is Canada’s premier equestrian show and is a platform for future Canadian Olympians as well as internationally known champions. Equestrian sport is the only Olympic sport where both men and women compete as equals.

Dave Soehner, principal of Bishop Alexander Carter Catholic Secondary School is extremely proud of Leah. “We are blown away by Leah’s dedication and passion for her sport,” Soehner said. “ We support her efforts 100% as she embodies the true Gator spirit, and wish her the best of luck with her upcoming championship.”

While she is competing, her trips in the ring can be watched on the Royal Winter Fair website, live feed. Leah and Joe will be in the ring on Friday Nov. 2, 3rd and again for Jump Canada finals on Nov 6th.
