Young St. Bernadette Poets Get Noticed

The students of St. Bernadette Catholic Elementary School were in the spotlight at a Poetry Café hosted at Chapters for Catholic Education week.  Their tremendous creativity caught the eye of Tom Leduc, Sudbury’s Poet Laureate.  Leduc was in attendance and is interested in featuring some of the poetic versus on his website which is featured on the Greater Sudbury Public Library website.

The poems presented were written by students as part of their poetry study for Language Arts classes.  Topics included:  My family, my sibling, my pet, the environment and even one about tacos.

Patty Mardero, Principal of St. Charles College Honoured as C.P.C.O. Principal of the Year

From April 21-23, the Catholic Principals’ Council of Ontario held their annual conference in Toronto and celebrated the 2015 Principal of the Year Awards. Patty Mardero, Principal of St. Charles College was one of the five chosen in the province to be honoured this year.
Principal of S.C.C. for the past 11 years, Mardero began her teaching career 28 years earlier in Renfrew County. The next several years saw her teaching, as a vice principal, and as a principal at several Sudbury Catholic elementary schools including St. Francis, Sacred Heart, St. Theresa, St. Charles Elementary and Marymount Academy. In 2004 she became the first female principal of the former all-boys’ secondary school – St. Charles College. According to the CPCO release. “Patty believes in the power of service and strives to promote this with her students. In her first year at St. Charles College, the school collected 25,000 cans for the Sudbury Food Bank. Now it collects more than 100,000 cans – the largest, single donation to the Sudbury Food Bank. The school also raises over $10,000 yearly for missions, and sponsors 8 children from third world countries.”
According to Mardero, she is “very humbled to be recognized by Catholic Principals’ Ontario for this award. I am very fortunate to have the opportunity to work with so many dedicated principals and vice principals committed to making a difference in the lives of the students we serve. I thank the Sudbury Catholic District School Board for allowing me the opportunity to teach, lead and grow. I appreciate their support and faith in me over the past 26 years.”
“On behalf of the Sudbury Catholic District School Board, I would like to say how proud we are of Patty Mardero,” Jody Cameron, Chair of the Board for the SCDSB stated. “She truly exemplifies a strong Catholic leader and we are so fortunate to have her in our schools supporting and mentoring our staff, as well as nurturing our students to be future leaders.”

Mental Health Week – May 4-10, 2015

Despite the fact that mental health concerns affect one in five young people, fewer than
25 percent of children and youth with mental health problems receive treatment. The
biggest reasons for this are a lack of understanding and a fear of being stigmatized or
negatively perceived by others.
In Ontario, May 4-10, 2015 is declared Children’s Mental Health Week. This week is
about increasing mental health awareness, decreasing stigma, and increasing
knowledge about available help. Sudbury Catholic Schools would like to take this
opportunity to extend awareness of mental health and our board’s Mental Health and
Well-Being Strategy to students and parents.
Each of our schools will be provided with information cards and magnets to send home
with each student, highlighting the SCDSB Mental Health and Well-Being Strategy and
the website portal. Through these resources parents can become more aware of child
and youth mental health, gain knowledge of our board’s efforts, and have access to
resources.
Schools with students in grade 7+ will also receive posters to display throughout their
hallways and classrooms. By showcasing these posters, we are de-stigmatizing mental
health and creating a safe and accepting environment in our schools that is proven to
influence student well-being and improve conditions for learning.
Thank you for your continued efforts in making Sudbury Catholic Schools a place where
well-being matters! If you require further information, please do not hesitate to contact
the Sudbury Catholic District School Board at 705-673-5620.

Staff and Students at St. Charles Pray the Living Rosary to Kick Off Catholic Education Week

The St. Charles Catholic Elementary school community came together to pray the Living Rosary to kick off Catholic Education Week 2015. Students in grades 6, 7 and 8 made up the individual beads of the rosary, surrounding the remaining students with the peaceful prayer.

The word rosary means “crown of roses”. Our Lady has revealed to several people that each time they say a Hail Mary they are giving Her a beautiful rose and that each complete rosary makes Her a crown of roses. The Holy Rosary is considered a perfect prayer because within it lies the awesome story of our salvation. With the rosary, in fact we meditate the mysteries of joy, of sorrow and the glory of Jesus and Mary. It’s a simple prayer, humble so much like Mary. The heavenly Mother has invited us to say the Rosary as a powerful weapon againstt evil, to bring us to true peace.

World Religion Study Project Leads to Elaborate 3D Synagogues Designs

Give Grade 11 French Immersion students at St. Charles College a challenge and they will meet and exceed it.  The students are studying world religions this semester.  As part of their Judaism studies, they were given the task to build a 3D synagogue including all the necessary elements of a synagogue on the inside.

Teacher Jessica Demore says “The students stepped up to the challenge.  One group completed the task using 321 spoons to build their synagogue.  Others got fancy and virtual and constructed their synagogues using the ever popular building program, Minecraft.”

The French Immersion students will be visiting a synagogue later this month as part of their studies.  They will also study Islam and Hinduism, all the while comparing it to their Catholic faith before the end of the school year.
