Sudbury Catholic Students and Staff Participate in National Sweater Day to Combat Climate Change

Each year on the first Thursday of February, Canadians are asked to turn down their heat and wear sweaters to raise awareness about climate change and energy conservation. Founded by WWF-Canada in 2010, more than a million Canadians have participated in National Sweater Day.

In an effort to combat climate change, Sudbury Catholic Schools participated in this initiative on February 6, 2020. Staff and students at Holy Cross School, St. David School, St. James School, St. Charles College, Marymount Academy, Bishop Alexander Carter C.S.S and the Catholic Education Centre brought their warmest sweaters as schools turned down the heat by 1.5 degrees celsius throughout the school day. Though the change in temperature was nominal; collectively, we as a Board made a statement regarding climate change and its impact on our world.
“National Sweater Day gave our staff and students an opportunity to reflect on how rising global temperatures are impacting the planet and how together we can help to reduce climate change by making small changes in our daily live,” said Joanne Bénard, Director of Education for the Sudbury Catholic District School Board. “By making a commitment to the planet on National Sweater Day, students and educators better understand the powerful impact that they can have.”

St. Charles College students and staff excited for the return of World Junior Champion and fellow Card

Students and staff at St. Charles College will have to wait a little longer to see fellow Cardinal Quinton Byfield and his gold medal from the World Junior Championships.

After accepting his gold medal, he left the Czech Republic and returned to his hometown of Newmarket. He will soon reunite with the Sudbury Wolves briefly before departing for the CHL Top Prospect game along with fellow St. Charles student Jack Thompson. This game showcases the top NHL Draft eligible talent from across the OHL, Quebec Major Junior Hockey League and the Western Hockey League with hundreds of scouts in attendance.

Kristy Hebert, who teaches Byfield says: “It has been an unbelievable opportunity to have such a talented athlete in our school and community. Quinton has added so much to our programs, bringing a plethora of hockey knowledge and skill. As part of the Leadership class, he has mentored Mrs. Fowke’s Grade 1 students at Holy Trinity Elementary school as well as here at St. Charles College in our Life Skills program. He has made many connections to students and has been an outstanding role model; we couldn’t be more pleased for Quinton and his recent success at the World Juniors!”

The students at Holy Trinity are also eager for his return. It shared messages on social media wishing him luck at the World Junior Championships just before the holidays.

Byfield is not expected to return from the CHL Prospect game for at least another week.

Sudbury Catholic Students Participate in Explore Carpentry Event

Just under 40 elementary and secondary female students from Sudbury Catholic took part in the third annual Girls Explore Carpentry Event, hosted by the Azilda Carpenter’s Union Local 2486.

This year, female students were exposed to the daily tasks and routines of a licensed drywall journeyperson and took part in a variety of hands-on learning activities involving cutting, patching, taping and mudding. The importance of health and safety protocols and the use PPE in the workplace was also put into practice during the event.

The Explore Carpentry Event was funded by the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP) in an effort to encourage more females to pursue a career path in the trades.

“We are proud to offer opportunities such as the Explore Carpentry Event to our female students,” said Joanne Bénard, Director of Education. “It is through these events that they gain confidence, put skills into practice and learn how they can pursue a career in the trades.”
