St. Mary Catholic School Sends Gifts to Children in Afghanistan

Students at St. Mary Catholic School in Capreol will be sending candy canes with messages of Peace and Hope to the children of Afghanistan. On Tuesday, November 7 at 1:00 p.m. the students will be putting the finishing touches on the candy canes and completing the messages – a “peace” card which will be attached to each candy cane. Some of the symbols the students drew include a Canadian flag, a handshake, children playing, happy faces, and a peace sign. These products will be sent to Cpl. Matt Wood, age 21, of the Toronto based Queen’s York Rangers who is presently serving in Kandahar. Cpl. Wood’s job is to bridge relations between Canada and Afghanistan.

Mrs. Mary Peterson, a retired teacher with the Sudbury Catholic District School Board spearheaded the campaign with the staff and students of the school. Matt’s Grandmother resides in Capreol and his mom received her elementary education at St. Mary Catholic School. Many of the students know of other members of the Canadian Armed Forces who are serving in Afghanistan which makes these gifts “from kid to kid” that much more special.
