St. Benedict Catholic Secondary School Holds 8th Annual ‘Christmas Sponsored Families’ Campaign
St. Benedict Catholic Secondary School will be holding its 8th Annual Christmas Sponsored Families Campaign to support families from St. David, St. Francis and St. Christopher Catholic schools as well as the Salvation Army. Each home room class will sponsor a Greater Sudbury family to help brighten their Christmas. The students also raise money to purchase gifts for the children and collect food items, all of which are donated to the schools and the Salvation Army and delivered to the families. It is a wonderful tradition at St. Benedict which has brought a great deal of joy and commitment to both students and staff over the last eight years.
The Salvation Army will be picking up the packages on Friday, December 15, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Benedict Catholic Secondary School, 2993 Algonquin Road for 18 families. Staff and students at St. Benedict’s will deliver the remaining packages to the respective schools.
St. Mary School Council Member Wins Local Award for Making a Difference
The Staff and Students of St. Mary School would like to extend their congratulations to Cathy Mohns, the 2006 Our Children, Our Future Champion for Children recipient, Volunteer category. Mrs. Mohns is active not only at the school but at Our Lady of Peace Church in Capreol as well. An invitation had been sent out to the community by the Our Children, Our Future Board of Directors for nominations of those individuals who are “caring, concerned, consistent and committed to making a difference in children’s lives”.
Mrs. Mohns is the Vice-Chair of St. Mary Catholic School Council and a lunch supervisor at the school. She was instrumental in organizing the “Our Lady of Peace/St. Mary School” float in the Capreol Lion’s Club Santa Claus Parade. The theme of the float was “Jesus was our greatest Gift”, and children from the school were able to sit with Joseph and Mary with the baby Jesus. Cathy, along with some parent volunteers, staff and students also used the float on the night of December 7th to go carolling on the streets of Capreol. Both money and food was donated by the generous residents and all contributions will be given to the needy. All carollers then returned to the school for hot chocolate. The St. Mary Monarchs salute the fine efforts of Mrs. Mohns and celebrate with her in her award.
