Massimo and Donna in Ms. Visentin ‘s Gr. 2/3 class at Corpus Christi School, proudly display the prayer cloth which classmates and family guests signed, after their Open House Celebration during Catholic Education Week. Students and family united in song to “Yes, We Believe” to reaffirm their Catholic Faith, before the activities began. Parents had an opportunity to listen to their favourite poem which the children had created throughout the year, along with many other writing pieces from their Writing Portfolio Collection. The students and their guests also worked together on the laptops in order to design a comic strip which summarized Sudbury’s origins as St. Anne of the Pines.

The Living Rosary at St. Christopher
St. Christopher’s students celebrated Catholic Education Week with a number of activities within the school. The staff and student participated in the “Living Rosary” within the gym at St. Christopher’s school. Students represented a prayer within the rosary and led us as we prayed the rosary together. The gym was darkened and lights were lit as each prayer was said. May is the month of Mary and she is Jesus’s mother. Father Jim Hutton, from St. Patrick’s Church, and Father Andre were also participating in our rosary. The are with some of the grade 5 students.
Read-Alouds at St. David
The Grade 1 class was very excited to have Rossella Bagnato, Sudbury Catholic Superintendent of School Effectiveness come to the school during Catholic Education Week to do a read aloud with the book ‘The Very Cranky Bear’. The students thoroughly enjoyed the story that Mrs. Bagnato had to read the story twice!
St. James SK-FI Students Celebrate Their Love of Music
Students in the SK French Immersion program at St. James Catholic School celebrated their love of music with a Spring Sing-Along. As part of the school’s Catholic Education week, the children performed a number of French songs for their parents and grandparents. Afterwards, they had the chance to share in some refreshments with their families.
Superintendent Bagnato Congratulates St. James Winners
As part of a Safe Schools initiative students were given the opportunity to design a button that reflects the safe, caring, inclusive environment at St. James Catholic School. Several members of the school community judged the button submissions and three student designs were published as button badges for every student in the school.
Superintendent Rossella Bagnato personally visited St. James to congratulate the finalists.
St. David Dragons “JUMP”
St. David Dragons ‘JUMP’ rope for heart in support of the heart and stroke foundation during Catholic Education Week – May 7-11. The students collected pledges and skipped for 30 minutes. Maria Cimino, the Grade 1 teacher states “this is a great opportunity not only for our school to support local organization but also to continue our school initiative of staying fit and healthy”.
Learning About Life as a Writer at St. Benedict
During Catholic Education Week at St. Benedict, students were given the opportunity to listen to local author Sarah Lashbrook. She began by reading an excerpt from her book Where the Stream and Creek Collide, and after talked about her life as a writer. Lashbrook explained that she had been writing since she was 12, but was also inspired by two amazing high school English teachers. Students then learned how the concept for her book came from a nightmarish dream which led to her writing an outline, then realistic characters, and of course lots of research. Life as a writer isn’t easy. Lashbrook informed students she once had writer’s block for two months, that her book was edited four times, and therefore was written a total of five times before it was completed. During the Q&A session, grade 7 student Joshua Kroll asked, “Do you become attached to your characters?” Lashbrook responded, “I definitely do! I get right into them, and I’m sad when I’m done.” The recently published author advised students who want a career in writing to take drama courses to become a screenwriter, English courses if they want to be a journalist, and even history is a necessity for writers. Later, elementary teacher Sherry Trowbridge approached Lashbrook with an offer to return to St. Benedict to work with her intermediate students and write a class novel together. Her reply was an excited, “I’m in 100% for that!” Clearlly, those St. Ben’s students will be in for a treat when Sarah Lashbrook comes back to visit in the fall.
St. Charles Elementary Participates in Annual Hat Day
St. Charles Catholic Elementary School participated in hat day on May 11th. This is in remembrance of Johnathan Hetu a past student of St. Charles School who passed away from cancer. When Johanthan would return to school he would wear a hat to cover his hairless head, the result of his chemotherapy. Students were encouraged to wear a hat to remember him and all other children who have gone through the same experience. Students paid a dollar to wear a hat. The money that is raised goes to the NOFCC. Hat day this year has raised $154.00. Since Johnathan’s death, St. Charles has had an annual walk and hat day and have raised around $35 000 for the NOFCC (Northern Ontario Families of Children with Cancer). The annual Johanthan Hetu walk is scheduled for June 8th at 1:30.
St. David Running Club Takes Part in the Sudbury Rocks Walk, Run, Race For Diabetes
As part of their ongoing commitment to fitness, St. David students participated in the 1K Strong Kids Fun Run at the recent Sudbury Rocks Walk, Run, Race For Diabetes. During education week the students collected pledges and raised approximately $100 dollars. The running club has not only been running but have also been reading once a week with community volunteers and reflecting on their running in their running journals as a way to promote literacy and physical fitness.
