Students at Marymount Academy launched the official kick off to their 2010 Heart and Stroke Campaign on February 3, 2010. The theme for the school’s campaign is “Strokes for Stroke” as the main fundraiser will involve the girls paying for a dress-down day and will be going to the Laurentian University swimming pool to enjoy an Olympic themed pool party. This theme was chosen for several reasons. Firstly, the girls wanted to promote exercise and a healthy lifestyle and swimming fits the bill. Secondly, they wanted to tie the event to the Olympics so the pool party will include several Olympic themed games and events with the several prizes to be won. On hand for the launch were several community partners including Mayor John Rodriquez and Police Chief Frank Elsner. Mayor Rodriquez spoke to the girls about the importance of community involvement and physical fitness. Rodriquez said that he was always delighted to visit Marymount as it is a school of heart and spirit. As February is Heart month, he stressed the importance of giving from the heart to support this mementous campaign and their involvement “says a lot about who you are as a individual, as a school and as citizens of Sudbury.” Chief Elsner also spoke to the girls about how he his family has been personally affected by heart disease and stroke and stressed that one of the main initiatives of the Greater Sudbury Police Service was getting involved with youth initiatives. Elner told the girls that he loved visiting Marymount because it is the school with the most spirit and he knows that with the students getting involved in this campaign, it shows that “our future is in good hands.”
Several other business were on hand as they have already begun to donate to the campaign. Lise Callahan, a teacher from Marymount who organized this event spoke to the girls about the importance of what they were undertaking. “We need to make the community aware that this is a problem for people of all ages. It does not just affect older adults, in fact, heart disease and stroke causes one in every three deaths in Canada every year.” The students will also be raising funds through raffles and other school events to support this significant campaign

The grade 3 students of St. Andrew School and their teacher Mr. Laurin held a bake sale on February 2nd in support of the Red Cross efforts to help the people in Haiti. The students brought in tasty treats and also had a snowman cake to raffle. They raised $298.42 in their one day project.
St. James Recycles for Haiti
Along with all of the money raising efforts going on at our Sudbury Catholic Schools, Grade 5 Eco-Squad leaders at St. James Catholic School in Lively are collecting milk bags which are used to make sleeping mats. The bags are then crocheted by a neighbour Cindy Kavanaugh into comfortable, waterproof mats which will be forwarded to Haiti. The mats can be used for eating or sleeping and also due to their bright colours these mats do not attract bugs. It takes 250 milk bags to make one large mat and 150 bags to make a smaller mat. To date the students have collected over one thousand milk bags. The St. James students will continue their campaign until the end of March.
St. Paul Catholic Elementary School Takes a Different “Step” to Support Haitian Relief
The Sudbury Catholic District School Board’s Haitian relief support is continually ongoing. To that effect, on top of the $1000 that the school raised in one day, St. Paul Catholic Elementary School decided to donate gently used shoes to the people of Haiti in partnership with the Soft Moc Shoe store in the New Sudbury Mall.
Students were asked to bring in shoes that were still in good shape to send overseas so that the children of Haiti could protect their feet as the walking has become treacherous because of all the debris on the ground. The students were encouraged to write a short message to put in the shoes to let them know that our students are praying for them.
SCDSB Update of Monies raised for Haitian Relief
As of Friday, January 22, 2010 our elementary and secondary schools have raised over $7000 in donations to support Haitian relief. Many of the monies raised came from school bake sales, PJ dress-down days, “Hats for Haiti” days, and staff luncheons. One student in particular, Rayden Recollect who is a Grade 1 student from St. David Catholic Elementary School, brought his piggy bank to school and decided to donate every single cent that he owned!! It is students like this that really reflect the Catholic family spirit we have at the Sudbury Catholic District School Board and are very, very proud of all of our students and staff for collecting so much in such a short amount of time!!! It really is a huge accomplishment !

Staff and students of St. Andrew Catholic Elementary School have been praying daily during their afternoon Prayer Break for the people of Haiti. On January 19, 2010 the school held their “Hats for Haiti” day. SCDSB High Schools Raising Funds for Haitian Relief
SCDSB high school students have been working very hard the last couple of days to raise much needed funds to support Haitian relief. At Bishop Alexander Carter Catholic Secondary School, the students raised a total of $420 to donate to the relief efforts. The Social Justice Action Council at St. Benedict Catholic Secondary School held a bake sale over two days to assist the earthquake victims raising over $845. The students and staff of both schools were overwhelmed with the success of their money raising efforts and were thrilled to be able to make such substantial donations. St. Benedict Students Inspired by Words from an Olympic Torch Bearer
Edith Vigna, a teacher at St. Benedict Catholic Secondary School invited a special guest to visit her class on January 13, 2010. Karen Luczak, an Olympic torch carrier in Sudbury spoke to the students about her adventure. The students were in awe as they listened to Luczak as she credited her being chosen as a torch bearer to her many years of volunteering that she continues to do to this day. Luczak spoke of the importance of volunteering in your community and Vigna felt that her words had a really, positive impact on the students as they are now very excited to begin volunteering at the new breakfast program that will be starting at St. Ben’s in the upcoming weeks.
