At St. John’s Catholic Elementary School, students and staff have been participating in the Terry Fox Run for several years now! On Thursday, September 25, all students from FDK to grade 8 ran and collected funds for Cancer research with the HOPE that some day, scientists will find a cure for this dreadful disease. The beautiful sunshine and the warm weather were an excellent motivation for all. Towards the end of the day, Vice Principal Kim Coluzzi made the much anticipated announcement that they had collected 281.21! Let’s keep the HOPE alive! Together, we can make a difference!

St. David Catholic School Gladly Welcomes Full Day Kindergarten
This September, St. David Catholic Elementary School implemented full-day junior and senior kindergarten. It is the fifth and final year of full-day kindergarten in schools across the province. “We are very excited to have the FDK program at St. David. It is a wonderful addition to our school community,” said Jennifer Gran, FDK teacher.
This new kindergarten program employs not only classroom teachers, but also early childhood educators. The teachers and the ECE’s work as a teaching team to support child development, behaviour and improved academic achievement. “Our goal is to give each child the best start possible in school. We work together with the community to build our student’s confidence and provide a solid foundation for their learning.” states Angela Ross, St. David School ECE.
The FDK program encourages children to learn through play and small group instruction. Learning through play and in small groups assists children in developing positive self regulation skills, age appropriate problem solving strategies and a general love of learning.
St. David Catholic School invites all FDK students and their families to meet their new teachers and early childhood educators at the school’s open house on September 30 at 4 pm.
Grade 9’s Go “Full Steam Ahead” with Community Service Hours
This year’s group of grade 9 students at St. Charles College were offered some added incentive – do community service hours over the summer and be eligible for a $100 gift certificate for the mall. The winner is Reggie Bonhomme. Reggie worked at the Canadian Legion over the summer months and while he has garnered over 30 hours, he doesn’t plan to stop there.
Students must obtain 40 hours of community service during their high school career in order to graduate. Principal Patty Mardero says “the message has always been to start early and use the community service as a means of exploring career options.”
Principal Patty Mardero along with Guidance Department Head Silvia Faggioni presented Reggie with his prize this week.
Link Crew is Back at BAC!
Bishop Carter Catholic Secondary School is the only school in the Sudbury area that participates in the North American Link Crew Program, a program whose purpose is to help grade nines feel more comfortable as well as help them achieve success in their high school years.
The Link Crew grade nine orientation and transition program is designed to both welcome and support grade nines by assigning them a senior Link Leader as a mentor. The Link Crew leaders attended mandatory training days in August where the students were trained by teacher coordinators. This preparation was put to use on orientation day, Thursday, September 4 as the now-trained leaders were confident in facilitating their small group instruction with the energetic grade nine students.
The Link Crew leaders and teacher coordinators are now focussed on planning some exciting events and academic activities for the grade nines to keep this momentum moving throughout the 2014-2015 academic school year.
Putting the Fun in Summer Learning
Forty-five Grades 1 and 2 Sudbury Catholic Students had the opportunity to take part in some summer learning programs from July 2-18. Working out of St. David Catholic Elementary School, students were enroled in literacy, numeracy and aboriginal education programming. The literacy and numeracy components included games and activities with an emphasis on the fun of learning. The aboriginal component included learning about the Seven Grandfather Teachings, Metis history and culture, as well as traditional cooking lessons and culturally based activities. Also included in the programming, were Tae Kwon Do lessons each morning to start the day, with the Sudbury Catholic mental health nurse and black belt – Roland Dutrisac.
Program co-ordinator and the Board’s Special Education consultant, Christina Raso was pleased with the student engagement at this year’s summer school programming. “We have been running these programs for a number of years now,” Raso explained. “and every year, the students are eager to get here and start as they really enjoy the play based activities and fun learning environments. The Tae Kwon Do component also really excites the students as they get to work off some energy first thing in the morning, and have a lot of fun learning the different moves involved.”
St. David Celebrates Their Hubby Award with a Video
St. David School is the proud recipient of the 2014 Edgar Burton Youth “Hubby” Award in
Education. This award is awarded to deserving individuals or organizations as a public
acknowledgment of their compassion, dedication, integrity and hard work for the people of
Greater Sudbury. The “Hubby” is a uniquely Sudbury Award. Award receivers are decided on criteria’s of giving, commitment, and belief in the people and City of Greater Sudbury.
The award is in memory of Hub Bray who was 60 when he died of cancer, leaving behind family and a city to mourn him. Hub Bray was a popular community leader and local lawyer who tended to avoid the limelight, but worked hard behind the scenes to improve
life in the city. He was president of the Sudbury Food Bank, which has organized the Annual Hubby Awards in his memory. The school created this video to celebrate their award and each other! Enjoy!

Over 200 Sudbury Catholic School students and families participated in the community pow wow hosted by the N’Swakamok Native Friendship Centre. The students and their teachers were honoured to be invited to the National Aboriginal Day celebration. National Aboriginal Day is celebrated across Canada annually on June 21. On this day Canadians are encouraged to learn more about First Nation, Metis and Inuit peoples and celebrate their unique and diverse cultures.
Lynise Royer, St. David School grade 4 teacher stated that, “the pow wow was an amazing opportunity not only for my students but also for myself. It was a beautiful day. Our students were extremely respectful and 100 percent engaged in the teachings presented by the Elders and community representatives. I learned a lot today as well about the students I teach and their rich heritages.” Miss Royer continued to say, “on behalf of the Sudbury Catholic Schools community, I would like to thank the N’Swakamok Native Friendship Centre as well as Joel Agowissa and the 4 school board pow wow committee members on a beautiful celebration of culture and identity.
