SCDSB Chairperson’s Award 2006-2007

The Sudbury Catholic District School Board believes in the importance of recognizing individual(s) or group(s) who make outstanding contributions to our Catholic school system.
In honour of these contributions, the Sudbury Catholic District School Board is now accepting registrations for the SCDSB Chairperson’s Award for 2006-2007.

If you are aware of an individual(s) or group(s) that you feel should be recognized for their outstanding contributions to Catholic Education please take a moment to complete the nomination form and fax it to the attention of Regan Corelli at (705)688-1781 by March 31, 2007.

SCDSB Staff Invited to Participate in Group Discussion on Catholic Education in Ontario

Rossella Bagnato, Interim Director of Education and Tony Chezzi, Adult Faith Animator for the Sudbury Catholic District School Board invite SCDSB staff to participate in a group discussion on Catholic Education in Ontario and the important issues it is facing today.

The meeting will take place on Thursday, March 1, 2007 at Marymount Academy starting at 7:00 p.m..

Sudbury Catholic Board Announces New Superintendent of Education

The Sudbury Catholic District School Board is pleased to announce the appointment of Lucie Cullen as the new Superintendent of Education for the Sudbury Catholic District School Board. Mrs. Cullen replaces Rossella Bagnato who will vacate the position to assume the role of Interim Director of Education with the Board effective
January 1, 2007.

Mrs. Cullen possesses a Master of Arts degree from the University of Toronto, and a Bachelor of Education and a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Laurentian University. She is well qualified to assume the role of Superintendent of Education having accumulated more than 16 years of teaching and administrative experience in both the elementary and secondary panels as a teacher, vice-principal and principal.

In assuming her new position as Superintendent Mrs. Cullen stated that, “I am excited to be part of the Senior Administrative Team that promotes within the Sudbury Catholic District School Board the goals of academic excellence, spiritual growth and community service.”

Paula Peroni, Chair of the Board is pleased with the appointment of Mrs. Cullen to the position of Superintendent. “It is with a great deal of pleasure that the Board announces Mrs. Cullen as our Superintendent of Education. Mrs. Cullen not only possesses the academic, curriculum and administrative skills necessary for this position but she also brings with her a deep commitment to Catholic Education. Her strong community contacts and her aptitude for working with people as a team player make her an asset to this board.”

Zandra Zubac, Director of Education for the Sudbury Catholic Board echoed Mrs. Peroni’s comments. “I have known Lucie Cullen both personally and professionally for many years and I am thrilled to have her join our senior administrative team,” stated Zubac. “She has earned the respect of her peers and has an excellent reputation as a capable leader and will bring forth a high degree of competence and professionalism in her new role as Superintendent.”

Mrs. Cullen assumes her new position with the Board effective, January 1, 2007.

SCDSB Elects Chair and Vice-Chair at Inaugural Meeting

The Sudbury Catholic District School Board elected the new chair and vice-chair at the Inaugural meeting of the board held at the Catholic Education Centre on December 5, 2006. Paula Peroni returns as Board Chair having served previously as Chair of the Board from 1999 to 2001 and from 2004 to 2006. She is also currently the vice-president of the Ontario Catholic School Trustees’ Association (OCSTA) and the first vice-president of the Canadian Catholic School Trustees’ Association (CCSTA).

In returning to her role as Chair, Peroni commented. “It is indeed a great pleasure to resume the position as Chair of the Sudbury Catholic District School Board. Our successes as a Board are a tribute to the teamwork, cooperation and dedication of our students, parents, staff and partners in education. I look forward to continuing to build on these strong relationships to strengthen the unique partnership of home, school and parish which serves as the foundation of Catholic Education.”

George Middleton will assume the position of Vice-Chair of the Sudbury Catholic District School Board. Mr. Middleton is serving his sixth term as Trustee and has held the position as vice-chair on a previous occasion. “I would like to thank my fellow colleagues and members of the board for placing their confidence in me and allowing me to take on the role as Vice-Chair,” stated Middleton. “We will continue to work closely with the board’s senior administrative team in order to best serve the needs our students.”

Sudbury Catholic Board Appoints New Interim Director of Education

The Sudbury Catholic District School Board is pleased to announce the appointment of Rossella Bagnato as the new Interim Director of Education for the Sudbury Catholic District School Board. Mrs. Bagnato will replace Director of Education, Zandra Zubac, who has been seconded by the Ministry of Education to the Literacy and
Numeracy Secretariat.

Mrs. Bagnato has been an Academic Superintendent of Education with the Sudbury Catholic District School Board since 2002. She possesses a Master of Education degree from Ottawa University and has more than 20 years of experience in the field of Education. Mrs. Bagnato
is well suited to her new position as Director having been an Academic Superintendent of Education, principal, vice-principal and teacher with the Sudbury Catholic District School Board.

“I am honoured to assume the role of Interim Director of Education for the Sudbury Catholic District School Board,” stated Mrs. Bagnato upon accepting her new position. “I look forward to continuing the excellent standard set by Mrs. Zubac. I am privileged to work with a Senior Administration Team and Board of Trustees whose vision and commitment I admire.”

“Rossella Bagnato is a strong member of our Senior Administration team,” stated Zandra Zubac, Director of Education for the Sudbury Catholic District School Board. “She is a very capable leader and a warm and sincere person. Sudbury Catholic District School Board Staff, Students, Trustees and Parents are fortunate that she will have the opportunity to develop her vision for improved student achievement in the years to come.”

Rossella not only possesses the academic, curriculum and administrative skills necessary for this position but she also brings with her a deep commitment to Catholic Education and is extremely passionate regarding the Board’s support of teachers and
administrators as they guide students in their spiritual and academic journey.”

Mrs. Bagnato assumes her new position with the Board effective, January 1, 2007.

Director of Education Zandra Zubac Seconded by the Ministry of Education

The Sudbury Catholic District School Board has announced that the Ministry of Education has seconded Director of Education, Zandra Zubac, to the Literacy and Numeracy Secretariat. The two-year secondment begins January 1, 2007.

In accepting the secondment, Mrs. Zubac stated that, “It is with mixed emotions that I am leaving as Director of Education to accept the position with Ministry of Education’s Literacy and Numeracy Secretariat. During my five-year tenure as Director I have been very privileged to have worked with very capable and committed Staff, School Leaders, Senior Administration and Board of Trustees. I firmly believe that Catholic education fosters the search for knowledge as a lifelong spiritual and academic quest and by integrating Catholic beliefs throughout all subject areas of the curriculum our 7,000 elementary and secondary students learn to integrate faith with life and are well prepared for work, college and university.”

Of the secondment Mrs. Zubac said, “It is an honour to be asked to join Dr. Avis Glaze’s Secretariat and to be part of a Provincial Team dedicated to authentic student achievement for Ontario’s children.”

Paula Peroni, Chair of the Sudbury Catholic District School Board congratulated Mrs. Zubac on her new appointment. “Zandra has been a Teacher, Vice-Principal, Principal, Superintendent and Director of Education with this Board for the last 29 years,” stated Peroni. “Her skills as an educator and administrator are second to none. This Board has witnessed the inception of some of its most forward-thinking and progressive programs under her tutelage such as increased student achievement, student success programs and the commitment to technology for all our students. Our five Wireless Laptop Computer Programs, currently in all of our Elementary Schools and Grade 9 Mathematics Program, have expanded this September to include all of our grade 7 and 8 students and classroom teachers with their own laptops. Every one of our students, staff and parents will benefit from the vision and the commitment that Zandra has given to Catholic Character Education, School Leadership, effective teacher instruction and improved student achievement.”
