St. Paul the Apostle Catholic School to Celebrate International Peace Day

St. Paul the Apostle Catholic School will be celebrating International Peace Day on Friday, September 21, 2007 at the school by highlighting peace in our lives at school, at home and in our world.

During announcements throughout the week, St. Paul Catholic School students have shared information with the student body regarding a famous peacemaker. In all classrooms teachers have dedicated time to talking about how peace begins in each person’s heart, and how each student can do things to bring peace into their world, either at school, at home or in their neighbourhood.

On Friday, September 21, 2007, one student from each class will read his or her peace pledge on the announcements. In addition, students will gather in the gym in a moment of silence to pray before embarking upon the school’s walk-a-thon.

The school will be donating a portion of the proceeds from the fundraiser to Development and Peace to help promote peace in Third World nations.

St. Paul Catholic School Students Have a Lot of Heart

Students at St. Paul The Apostle Catholic School raised more than $8,500 for the Heart and Stroke Foundation during the school’s annual Jump Rope for Heart fundraising campaign.

The school’s students attribute much of their success to the tremendous support they received from both family and friends including the Coniston, Minnow Lake and Wahnapitae communities for the fundraising event.

Allison Hall, a Grade 1 student in the French Immersion program at St. Paul was the top fundraiser bringing in a total of $351 in donations.

The money was raised during the school’s annual Jump Rope for Heart.Representatives from the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Area Manager, Cathy Macey and Diane Larose, School Coordinator who were on hand for the cheque presentation at the school thanked the St. Paul Catholic School students for their hard work and generous donation. Macey informed the students that St. Paul The Apostle Catholic School was one of the top schools out of 50 schools that raised money for the Heart and Stroke Foundation this year.

St. Paul Catholic School Celebrates “International Literacy Day”

St. Paul the Apostle Catholic School will be celebrating International Literacy Day on Friday, January 26, 2007 at the school by hosting a Happy Seussday! Seuss-based activities will take place in the morning while parents and other community partners have been invited to the school to read Dr. Seuss books to students in the afternoon.

Jean McHarg, Academic Superintendent of Education for the Sudbury Catholic District School Board along with staff from the Greater Sudbury Public Library will also participate in Literacy Day festivities. There may even be a few Cat in the Hat characters floating around that day!

St. Paul the Apostle Catholic School Sends Special Message to Students’ Father Serving in Afghanistan

St. Paul the Apostle Catholic School will be video taping a special message for the father of three of the school’s students who is presently serving in the Canadian Forces based in Afghanistan.

Mr. Dave MacDonald, Academic Computer Instructor for the Sudbury Catholic District School Board videotaped the students singing O’ Canada and the Topolnicky children delivering messages to their dad and the Canadian Troops. The video was set up on a website, and e-mailed to Mr. Topolnicky, providing him with a link to the site, so that the troops can actually see and hear the students singing and wishing them well.

St. Paul Students are VIPs

Grade 6 students from St. Paul The Apostle Catholic School were recognized by their fellow students, teachers, family members and representatives from the Sudbury Catholic District School Board for their participation in the Values, Influences and Peers (VIP) program at the school recently.

The VIP program under the stewardship of the City of Greater Sudbury Police Department is geared to Grade 6 students and stresses the importance of values, how to be a positive influence, and how to recognize and take a stand againstt peer pressure.

Members of the City of Greater Sudbury’s Police Force, and the Royal Canadian Legion were also in attendance to honour the students. Constable Scott Kirkwood presented each of the 43 students involved in the VIP program with an award of merit on behalf of the city’s police force. The Royal Canadian Legion purchased VIP T-shirts for the students.

St. Paul Students Have Green Thumbs

Students, parents, grandparents and staff at St. Paul The Apostle Catholic School celebrated the last of this year’s Earth Day activities recently by planting more than 400 Red Pine seedlings in the school grounds to help re-green the area. The seedlings were donated courtesy of Vermilion Forest Products Management along with two tandem truckloads of black loam from John Van Druenen, (Garson Pipe Contractors Ltd.) to bed the seedlings.

Mr. Toppers Pizza, (owner’s Kelly and Carolyn Toppazzini) kindly provided pizzas to feed all of the volunteers after the planting was complete. Pam Rivet from Dr. Signs provided ice cream treats to all planters and Stella Legault from the Colonial Inn brought juice boxes to quench their thirst after planting.

St. Paul The Apostle Catholic School would like to thank Vermilion Forest Products Management, John Van Druenen of Garson Pipe Contractors Ltd., Mr. Toppers Pizza, Pam Rivet and Stella Legault for their kind donations. Special thanks to the Ministry of Natural Resources staff: Don Mark, District Information Specialist; Amber Hamilton, Ontario Ranger Supervisor and Jesse Levert, Senior Forest Technician for coordinating the event and all students, parents, grandparents and staff for their hard work. Last, but not least, thank-you to Wal-Mart for jump-starting the entire project, and who continue to support the re-greening effort of St. Paul The Apostle Catholic School.

SCDSB Family Mourns the Loss of Pope John Paul II

Students, parents and staff of the Sudbury Catholic District School Board mourned the death of His Holiness, John Paul II by holding special prayers services in Catholic Schools throughout the region of Greater Sudbury. At this time of great loss, our schools are also celebrating the incredible life of this extraordinary man. Pope John Paul’s commitment to social justice, the vulnerable, international unity and youth, is a source of inspiration to many people especially the youth in our Catholic school communities. As a former teacher, Pope John Paul was an advocate for Catholic education. During his visit to Ontario in 1984, the Holy Father spoke of Ontario’s Catholic schools as a blessing not only for Catholics, but also for the nation, as the country was “enriched by the intellectual and moral formation Catholic schools provide for their students.”

Having learned of the death of Pope John Paul II, His Excellency, Jean-Louis Plouffe, Bishop of the Diocese of Sault Ste. Marie shares the following statement. “The world and the Catholic Church are different today thanks to the presence among us of this spiritual giant. We have so much for which to be thankful, having benefitted from the life and wisdom of this exceptional leader.”

The Holy Father’s dedication to youth is reflected in the wonderful tradition and celebration of faith that he initiated called World Youth Day. As Canadians we were honoured to host the most recent World Youth Day in 2002. The memories of that event continue to invigorate the thousands of youth from our school communities and around the world who were encouraged to go out and be “the light of the world and salt of the earth.”
