Graphic novelist and creator of Rabbit and Bear Paws, Chad Solomon visited both St. John and St. James Catholic Elementary Schools. The Rabbit and Bear Paws series involves heroes that share humourous adentures based on tradition Aboriginal teachings. The students at both schools had an opportunity to learn some traditional Aboriginal teachings, as well as, the creativity and innovation that is involved with designing graphic novels.

St. John Runs for Diabetes
On May 11th, 11 dedicated St. John Catholic Elementary School students participated in the Sudbury Rocks 5K run for diabetes. The cross-country running team has been participating in races throughout the school year in order to train for this event. Top runners from St. John were Ethan Lavallee, Chris Benoit, and Eran Lamarche. Coach Mrs. Vaillancourt is extremely proud of all the runners.
Bookie Monsters at St. John
After 7 months of preparation, The St. John’s “Bookie Monsters” are proud of their third place finish at The Battle of the Books Competition held on April 23rd at Tom Davies Community Centre in Lively. Furthermore, the team won the spirit award thanks to the quick thinking of Mrs. Roque, teacher and Bookie Monster parent, who created the team cheer on the spot! Coaches Mrs. Whitman and Mrs. Walker are very proud of James Roque, Ashley Ross, Lauren Carlson, Avery Hoffman, Madison Michalowicz, and Aidan Gardner.
St. John School Wins Gold in Nesbitt Challenge!
With an intense effort from grade 7 & 8 students, the St. John Catholic Elementary School’s very first ice-hockey team took home the cup in the 2nd Annual Nesbitt Challenge. The team competed againstt 9 other teams across the Greater City of Sudbury and won 1st in the finals againstt the Lively Hawks with a score of 5-3. Coaches, Mr. Stargratt, Mrs. Vaillancourt, Mr. Gobbo, and Mr. Benoit were honoured to coach such a remarkable group of students and are immensely proud of the dedication and sportsmanship demonstrated by all of their players. Celebrating Franco-Fun days at St. John School
At St. John Catholic Elementary School, their activities for Franco-Fun day were spread over a three day period. On March 19th, their French Immersion FDK program created beautiful Franco-Ontarian flags and proudly waved them to show how lucky they are to learn a second language!
On March 20th, the school started off our morning announcements with music from the Franco-Ontarian group SWING followed by a few fun and interesting facts about the French language and culture across the world. The grade 1 & 2 French Immersion, grade 1 English and grade 5/6 English classes then had the opportunity to go out snowshoeing, led by Bradley Blackwell from the Killarney Centre’s outreach program. Through this activity, the younger students were able to learn about animals and their habitat. The older students were able to better understand the purpose of snowshoes and how important is was for French Settlers to build and maintain a friendship with the First Nation’s people if they were to survive when they arrived to this new land we now call Canada. Students were also encouraged to greet each other in the hallway in French throughout the day. Quelle belle journée!
On March 21st, all students at St. John School were given a button or tattoo that allowed them to show their support for French learning within the school community. They also attended a magic show in the gym with one of their own supply teachers, The Amazing René! The children and staff alike enjoyed the bilingual presentation and actively took part in the show. Vive la francophonie!
St. John School celebrates 100th day of school
On Monday, February 10th, St. John School celebrated our 100th day! Students and parents from the FDK classes participated in a variety of 100-themed activities in the school gym.
Family Literacy Day at St. John
Danielle Daniel writes and paints to unearth the buried stories within. She was born and raised here in Sudbury and is the daughter of one of our retired teacher’s Mme Denise Fraser who taught at St. John’s school for many years. A school teacher herself, Danielle has now become a full-time artist and writer.
On January 27th 2014, students & parents from the primary division at St. John school had the privilege to interact with this local author. Danielle read her book “Sometimes I Think I’m a Fox” to the students and shared with them her love of writing and painting. We could hear animal sounds coming from the gym as the students actively participated in the read aloud. A fun time was had by all!
Celebrating Ste. Catherine at St. John
On Monday, November 25th, St. John Catholic Elementary School French Immersion students celebrated the tradition of Ste-Catherine. The students celebrated by making taffy with their families and teachers.
That’s a Wrap at S.C.C. – 112 Thousand Cans to Fill Sudbury Food Bank Shelves
Once again, the food drive at St. Charles College was a smashing success. Together with its feeder schools, 112 thousand cans were raised for the Sudbury Food Bank – smashing the goal of collecting 60 thousand cans in less than a week.
The food drive began more than twenty-five years ago, and its founder, former student Jim Szilva still takes part in the drive with his children at the school.
The school also teams up with Q92 and KISS 105.3 as well as the students at St. Raphael, St. David, St. Bernadette, St. Andrew, St. Paul, St. John and Pius XII Catholic Elementary Schools.
Students collect a combination of canned foods and cash – the cash portion totalled 15 thousand dollars this year.
