Rallying the Can Collecting Troops

Tomorrow, St. Charles College along with its feeder schools will know if they have crushed their can collecting goal. The school set out to collect 60 thousand cans in support of the Sudbury Food Bank this season as part of its annual collection blitz.

The high school is working in partnership with St. Paul, St. John, St. Bernadette, Pius, St. David, St. Raphael, St. Andrew Catholic Elementary schools. Student can collect a combination of canned foods and cash. Last year, they surpassed their goal by collecting more than 112 thousand cans.

The food drive began more than 25 years ago and its founder, former student Jim Szilva still takes part in the drive with his former high school. The school also teams up with Q92 and KISS 105.3 to Stuff a Bus full of food. The radio stations also broadcasted live from the school parking lot on the bus all week.

Tomorrow morning, the collection totals will be revealed and the food will then be transported to the Sudbury Food Bank warehouse.

Elementary Food Drive Wraps Up, Just as the St. Charles College Drive Begins

Students who attend St. Paul, St. John, St. David, St. Raphael, St. Andrew, Pius and St. Bernadette Catholic elementary schools have wrapped up their food drive collection efforts. Now the focus is on the students at St. Charles College.
Students from the seven schools spent last week going door-to-door to collect cans and other non-perishable food items to help the Sudbury Food Bank stock its shelves over the cold winter months.

Now the St. Charles College students begin their drive starting with their kick-off next Monday. Every year the high school teams up with Q92 and KISS 105.3 to Stuff a Bus full of food. The radio stations also broadcast live from the school parking lot during the week. The food is then transported to the Sudbury Food Bank warehouse.

St. John Celebrates National Aboriginal Day

St. John Catholic Elementary School students gathered on June 20 to celebrate a day in which we are called to learn more about First Nation, Metis and Inuit peoples. Student participated in a Prayer Service and had the opportunity to hear from local First Nation people about what National Aboriginal Day means to them. Will Morin guest speaker addresses the group about gaining understanding and respecting the contributions of the First people of Canada.

Primary Track and Field at St. John

On June 11, St. John Catholic Elementary School held it’s very own Grade 1 & 2 Track and Field! Primary students admired the junior students who were participating in the board wide track and field event, so teachers at St. John decided to to hold their very own competition for the young up and coming athletes. Each winner was presented with an award for their achievements. Pictured are the proud students showing off their certificates.

Family Fun Math Night at St. John

Families were invited to join staff and students on June 11 at St. John Catholic Elementary School for an evening of Mathematical Games that were practical, relevant and help develop a positive attitude towards the Math Curriculum. In an information and technology-based society, math skills are essential and this is taught through the Ontario Math Curriculum.

The Sudbury Catholic District School Board Numeracy Facilitator, Kathy Belanger, hosted and presented a fun Math Games Night showing that through ‘Math Games’ children have the potential to learn Math, be more focused and increase their Math retention.

Some of the skills that Math Games promote are:

□ Problem-solving Skills
□ Organizing Information
□ Development of Hand-Eye coordination
□ Concentration Levels
□ Memory, and their ability to communicate and use Mathematical language

Families had lots of fun, and they left with Math goodie bags filled with a dominoe set, pack of cards, dice, Parent pamphlet, and a list of games.

Author Chad Solomon visits St. John/ St. James School

Graphic novelist and creator of Rabbit and Bear Paws, Chad Solomon visited both St. John and St. James Catholic Elementary Schools. The Rabbit and Bear Paws series involves heroes that share humourous adentures based on tradition Aboriginal teachings. The students at both schools had an opportunity to learn some traditional Aboriginal teachings, as well as, the creativity and innovation that is involved with designing graphic novels.

St. John Runs for Diabetes

On May 11th, 11 dedicated St. John Catholic Elementary School students participated in the Sudbury Rocks 5K run for diabetes. The cross-country running team has been participating in races throughout the school year in order to train for this event. Top runners from St. John were Ethan Lavallee, Chris Benoit, and Eran Lamarche. Coach Mrs. Vaillancourt is extremely proud of all the runners.

Bookie Monsters at St. John

After 7 months of preparation, The St. John’s “Bookie Monsters” are proud of their third place finish at The Battle of the Books Competition held on April 23rd at Tom Davies Community Centre in Lively. Furthermore, the team won the spirit award thanks to the quick thinking of Mrs. Roque, teacher and Bookie Monster parent, who created the team cheer on the spot! Coaches Mrs. Whitman and Mrs. Walker are very proud of James Roque, Ashley Ross, Lauren Carlson, Avery Hoffman, Madison Michalowicz, and Aidan Gardner.
