To celebrate “Daffodil Month” in support of the Canadian Cancer Society, St. James School had a fundraiser for cancer research. Staff and students wore yellow or dressed like superheroes to honour those battling cancer. The school raised $900.00 for this very worthy cause! In addition, some staff and their families had their hair cut for wigs, also supporting the cause.

Sparky Visits St. James School
Students in Gr. 2 French Immersion received valuable information on Fire Safety when Sparky the Fire Prevention Dog visited St. James School along with Public Safety Officer, Mr. Luc Willard from the City of Greater Sudbury.

St. James Chess Team Wins First Place
Congratulations to the St. James Catholic Elementary School Chess Team who won first place at the recent Sudbury Catholic District School Board Chess Tournament. Coach, Ms. Machum has been strategizing with this group of chess players in preparation for the tournament as well as a club at the school to just have some fun! Way to Go Bears!
A True Stone Soup Experience at St. James Catholic Elementary
Students in teacher Tammy Lanci’s grade 1/2 class at St. James Catholic Elementary School had a tasty opportunity recently. After reading the classic storybook “Stone Soup” together, the entire class got to enjoy their own bowl of stone soup prepared by resource teacher Sarah Pappin and student helpers Noah Wulff and Hope Nyabeze.
St. James Students Participate in Celebration of La Ste-Catherine
On Wednesday, November 25th, St. James Catholic Elementary School students participated in a celebration of La Ste-Catherine. They learned about Marguerite Bourgeoys and how this nun established a school in Ville-Marie (Montreal) by making pull taffy (la tire) to attract the native students to her class. The French immersion teachers prepared the taffy the night before so that their students can taste this sweet confection. Stations in the gym were set up with different activities including dancing to french canadian music, a history lesson from Soeur Marguerite Bourgeoys (Mme Gaudette) and taffy tasting.
Don’t Be A Bully…Be a Good Sport at St. James
Staff and Students at St. James Catholic Elementary School wore their favorite sports jersey and pink to support good sportsmanship and anti-bullying. Daily announcements and prayers during Bully Awareness Week are centred around the message of being kind, patient, fair and just with one another.
St. James Students Inspired to be Earth Rangers
Earth Rangers (Kids’ Conservation Organization) visited St. James Catholic Elementary School recently and delivered a dynamic, fun and interactive presentation featuring live Animal Ambassadors. The program uses science-based information to educate students about the importance of protecting biodiversity while highlighting different conservation initiatives across Canada. St. James students have been inspired to adopt sustainable behaviours and have been empowered to become directly involved in protecting animals and their habitats.
St. James Scares Hunger Away
St. James Catholic Elementary School students “Scared Hunger Away” by bringing in a canned food non-perishable item to donate to the Walden Food Bank. Bringing in a canned food was replaced with bringing in treats and candy to school for Halloween!
