Students and staff at St. Charles Catholic School welcomed a great guest speaker: Paul Perry, Mental health nurse with CCAC and the SCDSB. They participated in an interesting session on anxiety and mental health. The information was delivered to students in grades 7 and 8, bringing messages of awareness, hope and where resources can be obtained.

Come Read With Me at St. Charles
During Catholic Education Week at St. Charles Catholic Elementary School, families in the Mme Martin’s JKFI, Mme Daoust’s SKFI and Mrs. Malafarina’s JK/SKR classes came together for a “Come Read with Me” day. At this engaging and hands on session, parents received tips about reading with their children and the importance of oral language. Mme Martin then modelled a read aloud and parents then selected a book from the teacher’s bins of favorites or guided reading books that the students are using and practiced the strategies they learned.
Teachers posted examples of student work around the room that showed parents how picture books are used in all subject areas as a rich and purposeful resource. Parents did a gallery walk to see the artifacts that students created throughout the school year using these books.
Families left with their own read aloud book, an activity, tips sheet for reading at home and a bookmark with reading strategies for young readers.
Professional Speaker at BAC for All Parents
On Thursday May 9, 2013 beginning at 6:30pm in the school gym at Bishop Alexander Carter Catholic Secondary School parents from St. Charles Elementary School, St. Anne Elementary School and Bishop Alexander Carter are invited to attend an evening with Dr. C. Sturdy.
Dr. Sturdy is a professional speaker based in Toronto who is also an author, father, teacher, former school principal and active community member. On this evening he will be discussing two topics, “Bullying…How to Help Your Kids!” and “Hurried Adult/Hurried Adolescent”.
The presentation will last approximately 1hour 15 minutes with a Question/Answer period.
Additionally, he will be selling his CDs for $10.00 and the book, “The Hurried Life: 101 Ways To Slow It Down” for $20.00. If you will be attending you are asked to please RSVP the school.
On a final note there will be door prizes donated by Perkins Restaurant. We hope to see you there!
Bringing Spring into the Classroom at St. Charles
Spring has arrived in the JK French Immersion classroom at St. Charles Catholic Elementary School in Chelmsford. The students have been learning about flowers and plants and have been enjoying exploring in the dramatic play centre, “La boutique à fleurs.” On a snowy spring day, the students were captivated by the visit from local florists, Joanne and Morlie, from Fleurs Magiques Flower Shop.
Bags for Beds at St. Charles Elementary
As part of the Dearness Conservation Program, students from St. Charles Catholic Elementary School in Chelmsford collected milk bags once again this school year to donate to the “Bags for Beds” project. A total of 1600 bags were brought in over a four week period.
The opportunity to participate in this project supports students to deepen their understanding of how a seemingly simple recycling activity results in a profound improvement in the quality of life for others.
Azilda resident, Ms. Rolande Nault , picked up the bags and explained that she and four of her friends meet twice weekly to cut the bags into strips which they then crochet into mats. The mats are donated to developing nations, such a Haiti, where they are used as beds.
Cultural Learning at St. Charles Elementary
Aboriginal Support Worker, Joel Agowissa, shares with SKFI students at St. Charles Catholic Elementary School the medicines of the four directions. As a part of the Aboriginal Biinoojic Centres (ABC) program, students in Kindergarten and Grade 1 have met with Joel for 5 weeks to learn more about Aboriginal teachings. Students have enjoyed this program. Thanks Joel, for sharing your knowledge and passion for Aboriginal Education!
Seeing Double at St. Charles Elementary
Have you ever wanted to be just like someone else? Students and staff at St. Charles Elementary dressed as their ‘twin’ today to show their school spirit! Many people dressed as each other, while others dressed as a famous twin. Pictured is grade 5 student, Daniella Lowes and the principal, Mrs. St. Denis. Daniella surprised the principal by coming to school dressed as her, and explained that if she “could be anyone at all, she wanted to be Mrs. St.Denis”. Daniella did morning announcements and toured the halls with her twin.
St. Charles Elementary Students Explore Their Senses Through Goalball
JK/SK students in teacher Amy Malafarina’s class at St. Charles Catholic Elementary School learned more about their senses of hearing, touch and sight as they experienced the skills of the game Goalball. Thank you to teacher Adriano Simonato, a vision resource teacher with the Sudbury Catholic District School Board, for sharing his expertise and love for the sport with us!
