Sudbury Catholic Students to Take Part in Walk for a Second Chance- April 28

Student from all four Sudbury Catholic Secondary Schools will be taking part in the Irish Heritage Club of Sudbury’s Walk for a Second Chance on April 28th, 2012. This walk is organized to support organ donation awareness and the Gift of Life which is an initiative that is fully supported by the Sudbury Catholic District School Board and its students. On December 13, 2010, the Board launched its own challenge to the Greater City of Sudbury to be the first city in the province of Ontario to have 50% or more of its residents be registered organ and tissue donors, and have continued to spread the word to schools and the community about the importance of organ donation. Catherine McCullough, SCDSB Director of Education is very proud of Sudbury for embracing this initiative. “I am very proud of our Board for partnering with the Trillium Gift of Life Network for this very important initiative, and I encourage the entire community to join us in this challenge – to not only have Sudbury reach or even surpass the 50% registration for city-wide donation in Ontario, but more importantly, to recognize that there is no greater gift than the gift of life.”

David Dibrina, Sudbury Catholic Student Trustee, has been working with the Irish Heritage Club of Sudbury to continue to keep organ donation awareness a priority with students. “Organ donation is so important in saving the lives of others,” Dibrina stated. “It truly is one of the most selfless acts that we can do that can positively impact so many people. Students need to make sure they are registered (beadonor.ca) and talk to their families so that they know what their wishes are.”

The walk will take place on Saturday, April 28, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. at the Bell Park Amphitheatre, Sudbury.

This is a walk for organ donation awareness and there are no monetary pledges.

Another Golden Year at Kiwanis for St. Charles College

The music program at St. Charles College struck gold again this year in all three of its music categories. Concert choir, the concert band and the guitar ensemble all took home gold standings at the Kiwanis Music Festival. The guitar ensemble received a high gold – which places them in the 90% or above range in their musical abilities.

This is the second year in a row that the high school has taken gold standing in all divisions.

Choir and Concert band director Shannon Coyle says “I am very proud of my students and their achievements this season. This is a true testament to their hardwork and our music program at St. Charles College.”

Cardinal Artists Participate in “Emergence” Art Exhibition

Each year, students from across the Sudbury district submit their best artwork to be chosen for the annual juried art exhibition known as “Emergence”.

This year, Ms. Stenabaugh and Mrs. Simpson, at St. Charles College would like to congratulate seven art students whose works were chosen for the show.

Zest for Broccoli Takes Over St. Charles College

On Thursday, March 8th, schools in Greater Sudbury kicked off Nutrition month by eating broccoli. Close to one thousand students participated in the “big crunch” at 10 a.m. by chomping down on broccoli crowns at St. Charles College.

In teacher Beverly Belanger’s class, students enjoyed the broccoli while writing a math test.

Organizer/teacher Elizabeth Szilva says “It was an opportunity for the students to learn about the benefits of broccoli in a fun and active way.”

Cards City Champs Once Again!

The Boys Senior Hockey team completed their Perfect S.DS.S.A.A. season on February 29th with a three game sweep of the Manitoulin Mustangs to win the City Championship. The team’s record was a Perfect 19-0. The team won the Regular season title and the Playoff title as well as every individual award possible for the season. Individual awards included:

Regular season MVP: Trevor Bedard
Regular season Leading Scorer: Trevor Bedard
Best Goaltender Award: Matt Urso
Best Goals Against Average: Matt Urso and Nick McGregor
Best Defenceman: Evan Purcel
Most Sportsmanlike Award: Jacob Belanger
Coaches Award: Mr. Zanatta, Mr. D. Michelutti, Mr. Thompson
Playoff MVP: Zach Belanger

The team is now preparing for the NOSSA Championship held on March 5th & 6th in Thessalon, Ontario.

Sixth Place Finish for St. Charles College Improv Team

SCC’s Improv team competed at the 2012 Sudbury Regional Improv Games Thursday, February 8th and placed 3rd in the preliminary rounds. This qualified them for the Wild Card Round on Saturday, February 10th. After a very talented showing, the team placed 2nd and, unfortunately, missed the finals and placed 6th overall in the tournament. Team members are veterans ETHAN ROY, ALISON SMITH, and COLIN LAGACE and new this year are SHELDON DAOUST, BLAIRE MICHAUD, COLE THOMPSON, SEAN LYNOTT, MARC GREENE, and BEN CORTOLEZZIS. Most of these students have had roles in past SCC drama productions. Team Coaches Nancy Daoust and Angela Hodgins are extremely proud of the team performance and their dedication. We are already looking forward to next year’s Improv season.

Cards “Think Pink … or Red” on Valentine’s Day

Students at St. Charles College got decked out in red and pink this Valentine’s Day. The school held its second annual pink or red dress down day to support breast cancer. Students paid two dollars to dress down. All money raised will go to supporting the Breast Cancer Foundation’s Sudbury chapter for the purchase of new equipment. Almost 600 dollars was raised at the one-day event. This year, all high schools in the Sudbury area were asked to take part in the fundraising event.

St. Charles Cardinals Take On the Wolves

It’s not everyday that high school kids get to challenge the Wolves at a game of hockey. On February 14th, Life Skills students at St. Charles College went head-to-head with four members of the Wolves team for a couple friendly rounds of floor hockey.

Classroom teacher James Suchoplas organized the event. “Events like this build special memories for the students whether they are fans of hockey or not. It’s also an important lesson in being a team player and a way for the kids to showcase their school/team spirit.”

Wolves player Ryan Hanes says “It’s a win-win situation for the kids and us players to come in and give a little back to the community that we play for.”

Students Get Hands-On With Health Care

The Introductory Health Care class at St. Charles College recently visited St. Albert’s Adult Education Centre for a shared lab. The high school students joined forces with the Personal Support Worker students to gets some hands-on practical health care skills in the areas of feeding, oral care, vital signs assessments, patient transfers and basic bedside care.

The Introductory Health Care Class is part of the Specialist High Skills Major for Health and Wellness offered at St. Charles College. It gives students the opportunity to start pursuing health care related classes in their high school years.
