Lexi Christiaans, a student at St. Charles College competed in a business plan challenge hosted by the Regional Business Centre – Sudbury at Collège Boréal. She competed against students from various high schools around the city. It was a dragon’s den style competition, where students needed to pitch their business plan idea to a panel of judges comprising mostly of local entrepreneurs or business leaders. SCC Teacher to be inducted in Greater Sudbury Sports Hall of Fame
Mike Fabiilli, math teacher and football coach at St. Chares College will have the honour of being inducted into the Greater Sudbury Sports Hall of Fame! Mike was chosen as one of the 10 individuals that will be inducted into the 2018 Class. While serving as football coach, he brought St. Charles College to victory in the City Championship in 2015. He was also presented with the Chairperson’s Award that same year.
Fabiilli was a student at St. Charles College from 1977-1982. He played five years of football for the school winning three City Championships.
In 1982 he went to the University of Ottawa to play for the Gee Gees. As a freshman linebacker, he won the Peter Gorman Trophy for outstanding CIS freshman football player in Canada. He was a conference all-star linebacker for two seasons.
“I’ve been very fortunate to have played with many great teammates and to have coached many talented football players,” said Mike Fabiilli, math teacher at St. Charles College.
Mike Fabiilli will be inducted to the Hall of Fame during the 50th annual Sports Celebrity Dinner on June 13.
Turning points Essay Contest Winners honoured at annual event
Students, parents, teachers and invited guests gathered together on May 9, 2018 to celebrate the work done in this year’s Turning Points Essay Contest Awards ceremony. The essay contest stems from the Learning Partnership, which champions education systems in delivering innovative programs, research, policy initiatives and public engagement programs across Canada.
Turning Points allows students to reflect on their unique individual journeys and write powerful essays about a significant event or turning point in their lives. Winning students this year were from Marymount Academy, St. Charles College and St. Anne School.
Secondary Students Dominate at Skills Ontario Competition
Sudbury Catholic Schools was well represented in this year’s Skills Ontario Competition. Listed below are the students who participated in this year’s events:

– Anthony Sherrington (Automotive Service Technician) mentored by William Duncan.
We are happy to announce that St. Benedict’s Cameron Howe and Carter Poirier are bringing back a Gold medal in the Carpentry team of 2 competition. Under the supervision of teacher John Doyon, Cameron Howe and Carter Poirier have taken top podium at the 2018 Skills Ontario Competitions.
Congratulations to all involved in making this opportunity available to our students. A special mention to Cambrian College for creating excitement around “Team Sudbury participants” at this event.
St. Charles College completes outstanding production of Aladdin Jr!
SCC launched their production of Aladdin Jr. from May 1 – May 5 and were met with outstanding reactions from audiences! The group were thrilled with all of their performances and loved being able to bring the story to life!
Summer school credits for secondary students
In order for a student to be eligible to complete a summer school credit, they must be enrolled in a recognized Ontario Secondary School. All summer school registrations are done through the guidance department at the school that the student is currently enrolled in. There are a variety of secondary level credits at both the applied and academic level available this summer. For more information about the availability of specific courses, please contact your guidance department.
All secondary summer school credits are offered through eLearning (including summer coop). Students need access to a computer and reliable internet access in order to access their course material and submit completed work. Summer courses start the first week after school ends. The deadline to register is typically 2 weeks before school ends in June.
Students typically require 4-6 hours per day Monday-Friday in order to complete an elearning summer course. Coop courses require a minimum of 110 work hours. All Sudbury Catholic students must attend a mandatory in-class orientation session on the first day of summer school which is typically the first week day after the July long weekend.

Secondary Students Walk for Water!
Our Secondary schools all completed a Walk for Water on Friday, April 27! Students talked about the importance of the WE Foundation goal in providing 50 thousand people with clean water for life. Students fundraised for the cause, and completed walks within their individual school communities. Great job from all participating students! Sudbury Catholic Students Awarded as 2018 Stars of Excellence!
On Monday, April 23 the Final Concert of the Kiwanis Music Festival recognized the outstanding festival performances of many of our students!
Many students won individual awards for their vocal and instrumental performances! The Sudbury Catholic Schools Band was awarded Top Elementary School Concert Band, while the Marymount Academy Brass Quartet was awarded for for Secondary School Brass Ensemble!

Sudbury Catholic Schools Elementary Instrumental Band receives Gold at Kiwanis Music Festival!
On March 27th, the band performed at the Kiwanis Music Festival and received a Gold standard! The band has grown over the years, and includes 5 schools (St. Benedict, St. Charles College, St. Anne, St. John and St. James) and over 100 band members!
The band also competed at the Northern Ontario Music Festival on March 1 where they received a Silver standard. Congratulations to all band members!
