Students who will be beginning their educational careers this coming September gathered recently at St. Bernadette Catholic School for an afternoon in the life of a JK student.
Parents and students experienced story time, explored letters and numbers, enjoyed healthy snacks, fashioned play dough creations and had their first bus ride.
After the session students left with a goody bag full of resources to stimulate their learning through play during the summer months while they wait for the first day of school in September.

Award Winning Author Visits St. Bernadette
Students at St. Bernadette Catholic Elementary School had an exceptional opportunity on Monday, May 2, 2011. As part of their Catholic Education Week events, award-winning author Colleen Syndor visited the school and sat and read with the students and staff. In two separate sessions, one for the primary and one for the junior students, Syndor talked about being an author, answered questions from the students and read some of her books aloud with the kids. Last year, principal Diana Salvador applied for a grant through the TD Canadian Children’s Book Week (April 30 – May 7) and was informed that she was successful in her application. Colleen Sydor was the selected author for the visit and the school began making preparations for her visit. As Catholic Education Week fell on the same week, Salvador felt it was the perfect fit for Sydor’s visit. “One of the sub-themes for Catholic Education Week – Celebrating the Spirit, is the spirit of hospitality,” Salvador stated. “ What better way to celebrate this as a school than to have a wonderful, inspirational visitor come and speak to the students, where we can show her the true spirit of St. Bernadette’s.”
The students listened to Syndor speak and enthusiastically answered her questions as she asked them about different parts of her book. They had been familiarizing themselves as a school with her books for the last several weeks and had several favourites of which she read to the two groups.

St. Bernadette Stands Up for Peace
Students at St. Bernadette Catholic Elementary School took part in several creative activities in honour of Bullying Awareness week. Each class discussed how every single student has an important role to play in fostering a safe and caring school environment. Some of the week’s activities included a mass, taking the anti-bullying pledge and taking part in a live demonstration of peace by creating a student-body peace sign on the school’s front lawn.
Pyjama Day at St. Bernadette
It was a day of comfort and fun for the students and staff of St. Bernadette Catholic Elementary School as Friday, November 12 was pyjama day. Students were encouraged to come to school in their comfiest pyjamas for the St. Bernadette spirit day as well as to promote bedtime reading. “What better way to celebrate and promote bedtime reading for the students with their parents than with a pyjama day?” asked Diana Salvador, Principal of the school. “We always encourage students to read with their parents and guardians at home and know that the students really benefit when this shared reading takes place.” When asked if they enjoyed the day, several students responded that they wished everyday was pyjama day!
International Peace Day Celebration -St. Bernadette Holds Pinwheels for Peace Parade
It was perfect weather for a parade when the students at St. Bernadette Catholic school set off on their Pinwheels for Peace Parade. The entire school community walked with their hand-crafted pinwheels held high in celebration of International Peace Day on September 21st. Graciella Ngwana, Madyson Biladeau and Renee Beaudry, all SK students, learned that allowing the pinwheels to spin in the wind will spread thoughts and feelings of peace throughout the country and the world. After the parade students showed their support by respecting a moment of silence.

St. Bernadette Soars in Jump Rope for Heart
Students at St. Bernadette Catholic School raised more than $3,400.00 for the Heart and Stroke Foundation during their annual Jump Rope for Heart campaign. The students stay active and help a great cause. This is certainly one physical activity that has many benefits. Recently the students from JK to grade 6 at St. Bernadette Catholic School participated in the various skipping events organized by the St. Charles College high school students from Mrs. Paola Gutscher’s class. Once again, the students received tremendous support from the families and friends for this fundraising event. They would like to thank all the pledge donors in their school community. A special thank you goes out to Mrs. Gutscher’s class for all their help in making this event a fun-filled afternoon.
