St. Bernadette Takes on the Oreo Challenge

The Grade 5/6 class from St. Bernadette Catholic Elementary School have been thoroughly engaged in hands-on learning with Oreos.

On Tuesday October 8th, they participated in the O.R.E.O. project, a scientific math-based inquiry project in which hundreds of schools across the country participated.

The excitement began as students hypothesized how many cookies they could stack. Students then tested their hypothesis as they stacked their Oreos. The highest stack of Oreos was 26. They continued their math learning by finding the mean, median and mode of the class.

The learning excitement will continue throughout the curriculum as they will graph their stacking, write stories and then finally get to make sculptures with the yummy cream filling.

Of course, teacher Chantal Therrien’s students admitted that the best part was snacking on the cookies when the project was complete!

Stacking Cans from the Ground Up at St. Charles College

St. Charles College students and soon-to-be Cards are on a mission from October 7 to October 11 to collect 60 thousand cans of non-perishable food to feed the hungry in our city.  The more than 950 students at the school, along with students at several of its feeder schools are helping tackle the huge feat.

With a professional development day scheduled for Friday, October 11, it’s an even more daunting and onerous task to average 15 000 cans per day for the next four school days with a wrap-up aimed for Thursday, October 10th.

Last year, the students shattered their goal for 60 thousand cans by delivering a whopping 121 thousand cans to the Sudbury Food Bank – making it the largest single donation in the history of the Sudbury Food Bank.

The founder of the food drive at SCC, Jim Szilva told the students that the food drive starts at the ground and works its way up with feeder schools like St. Raphael, St. David, St. Bernadette, St. Andrew, St. Paul, St. John and Pius XII working with students in grades nine through to twelve in the high school to accomplish the mission.  Szilva started the drive when he attended St. Charles College more than twenty-five years ago.

The school and Szilva are teamed up with local radio station Q92 and KISS 105.3 to “Stuff the Bus”.

Q92 host Melanie Dahl asked the students to remember the times their belly ached because they felt hungry.  “Most of you can ask your parents for food or head to the fridge.  But consider for a moment you could not do that.”

General public is invited to assist with the stuffing of the bus by visiting the city transit bus each morning between 7 and 9 a.m. at St. Charles College with monetary or canned food donations.  There are some added incentives this year – including the option to fill out a ballot to win a ticket to the Sudbury Kinsmen home.

The bus will also be on location at Vrabs Independent Monday afternoon, Dumas Independent Tuesday afternoon and at the Metro on Lasalle Wednesday afternoon.

St. Bernadette and the Chocolate Factory

Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory will be developing new candy created by the Grade Four French Immersion students at St. Bernadette Catholic Elementary School. After studying the book, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, by Roald Dahl, the students created advertisements to sell their “new and creative” candy inventions to Willy Wonka himself. Jenny Aubin, the grade 4 teacher, took on the role of WIlly Wonka for the day and she had the difficult task of selecting the successful candy invention. The lucky winner, Katrina Pellat, earned a “year’s supply” of Wonka candy! “The students were very creative and amazed the entire school and staff with their engaging candy advertisements.” Aubin stated. The Principal, Diana Salvador, was impressed by the ingenuity of the candy designs created by the students, she stated, ” I would buy their candy!” .

The Adventures of Sparky the Travelling Fire Dog

The students in the Grade 1 class at St. Bernadette Catholic French Immersion School have been participating in the Greater Sudbury Fire Services program called, “The Adventures of Sparky the Travelling Fire Dog”. This program began in 2012 with grade one classes and involves a visit to the classroom from a Public Safety Officer who drops off a package containing: one Sparky Stuffed Toy, One Scrap Book, One Tote Bag and 35 Safety Checklists. Each child is given an opportunity to take Sparky home and complete the fire safety checklist with the involvement of their family. Firefighters return to the classroom in the spring to review the scrapbooks, talk about firefighting, show off their gear and conduct a fire truck tour. This program covers, reading ,writing, art, community helpers, health, public speaking, family involvement not to mention adding a little excitement to the classroom routine! Also, the program will reduce the student’s chances of experiencing a fire and will also ensure that families will have early warning should a fire occur through thoroughly checking and addressing smoke alarm issues in the home.

Extra! Extra! Read All About It!

The grade 4 students at St. Bernadette Catholic French Immersion School tried their hand at journalism by writing and creating their very own classroom newspaper. Entitled “Sabrecats en action”, the newspaper contains articles about various school events with direct quotes from first hand witnesses. Principal, Diana Salvador, said that ,”Students were enthused and engaged throughout this project. Students interviewed staff, peers, parents and community members and took their roles as reporters very seriously. The finished product is excellent!”

The classroom teacher, Mlle Aubin stated, “The students enjoyed their time as a reporters. Watch out The Sudbury Star, these students are the next generation of journalists!

Francais! Francais! at St. Bernadette

Francais! Francais! The students at St. Bernadette Catholic School welcomed French singer/songwriter Roland Bibeau Tuesday, March 19th to celebrate the International Francophone day. Mr. Bibeau performed a concert for the french immersion school that had the students putting on a fashion show, playing their air guitars and enjoying an explosion of confetti. “The students had a wonderful time dancing and singing along with the French music. What a great way for our students to celebrate being Franco-Ontarians!” said Diana Salvador, principal.

Celebrating Mardi Gras at St. Bernadette

The Grades 4 and 5/6 classes at St. Bernadette Catholic Elementary School celebrated Mardi Gras on Tuesday, February 12th. These French Immersion students discussed the history of the celebration, and its importance to their French Catholic culture. Students took part in the celebration by creating their very own Mardi Gras masks and partaking in a feast of homemade pancakes before beginning a fast for Lent.

When Life Throws You an Apple, Peel It!

During Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week students at St Bernadette school “got to know their apples” by touching them, throwing them and rolling them around. They were then asked to describe their apples. Students described their apples as bruised, dented, marked up, big and small. After a few minutes, the apples were collected, peeled and dropped into a basket. Children were then asked to find their apple within the pile. Remarkably, most children couldn’t find their apples. “They all looked the same!” students exclaimed. This activity allowed students to discover that, just like the apples, on the outside people, too, come in different sizes and shapes. But, underneath the outer layer, just like the apples, people are all the same. We have the same hopes and fears and dreams.
