St. Bernadette Learns about Metis Culture

Grade 4 students at St. Bernadette Catholic Elementary School attended a Métis presentation Monday, April 28th at St. David Catholic Elementary school. Students were immersed in stories about the Métis culture and learned about different tools used by the Métis people. They enjoyed being able to feel the various furs and learn about what each tool was used for during the War of 1812. The students were especially excited for their upcoming year-end field trip in which they will be travelling to Sainte-Marie Among the Hurons where they will continue their exploration of the life and culture of the Early Settlers.

Oui, On Parle Francais!

The French Immersion students in Grades 3, 4, 5 and 6 at St. Bernadette Catholic School put their French speaking skills to the test during a recent trip to Wal-Mart to shop for ‘back to school’ items. The students have been working very hard in class to improve their second language skills. ‘I enjoyed myself a lot. I was very glad to experience speaking French in a real-life situation outside of the classroom!” said Meghan Danyluk, Grade 4.

St. Bernadette Students Inspired by “Born to be Wild”

St. Bernadette Catholic Elementary School students from Mme Aubin’s Grade 4 class and Mme Therrien’s Grade 5/6 class are embarking on an inquiry based learning project. In order to build knowledge, students were very fortunate to attend a special presentation by Science North Staff Scientist, Mr Bruce Doran on Thursday, April 3rd. Mr Doran shared his experiences and the knowledge he gained about the fate of elephants while working in Africa on the Imax film, “Born to Be Wild”. After a question and answer session, students viewed the Imax film which features orphaned baby Elephants and information on The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. The presentation and movie sparked many ideas and questions from the students. A member of the Grade 5/6 class, Ivan Irazi, was able to share his experience of having visited The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust when he was a student in Africa! “Now students are working on developing authentic questions in order to deepen their understanding of why elephants are endangered,” says Mme Therrien.

Today we “bring God’s peace into the world”

St. Charles College and St. Bernadette students came together in song on November 11 for a special Remembrance Day faith celebration. The presentation was pulled together by Drama teacher Diandra Zafiiris.

It featured a medley of recognizeable songs such as “One” by U2, “21 Guns” by Green Day and “Meant to Live” by Switchfoot.

An eagle’s staff was also used as part of the memorable presentation to honour the fallen.

They painted pumpkins, made a Halloween craft, played candy toss into a pumpkin bowl, prepared and ate pumpkin pie in a bag, and read Halloween books. It was very nice to see so many smiling faces! Thank you to all of theparent volunteers for a great Halloween celebration.

It was great to see the residents’ faces light up when they saw all the little princesses and superheroes.

Halloween French Cooking Show at St. Bernadette

The French Immersion students in teacher Chantal Therrien’s Gr. 5/6 class at St. Bernadette Catholic Elementary School have been busy writing creepy halloween recipes.
After reading and analyzing the characteristics of what it takes to create a good french recipe, students decided to write and create their own, but with a twist!
They used the halloween vocabulary they learned in French to prepare horribly, haunted recipes. Students stared in amazement as their peers shared their spooky creations.
Scary stuff!

That’s a Wrap at S.C.C. – 112 Thousand Cans to Fill Sudbury Food Bank Shelves

Once again, the food drive at St. Charles College was a smashing success.  Together with its feeder schools, 112 thousand cans were raised for the Sudbury Food Bank – smashing the goal of collecting 60 thousand cans in less than a week.

The food drive began more than twenty-five years ago, and its founder, former student Jim Szilva still takes part in the drive with his children at the school.

The school also teams up with Q92 and KISS 105.3 as well as the students at St. Raphael, St. David, St. Bernadette, St. Andrew, St. Paul, St. John and Pius XII Catholic Elementary Schools.

Students collect a combination of canned foods and cash – the cash portion totalled 15 thousand dollars this year.
