St. Andrew Starts New School Year with Mass

St. Andrew Catholic Elementary School celebrated the new school year with a celebration of the Eucharist in the school activity room. Father Sam from St. Andrew the Apostle Parish led the students in the celebration. The students were challenged to show respect for the earth, their classmates, for all people, young and old, of all races and abilities, and finally to show respect for themselves, by working hard and doing their best to build God’s kingdom on earth.

St. Andrew Students Celebrate their First Communion

Students from St. Andrew School who received their First Communion this school year celebrated together with a special prayer and celebration on June 8th. Twenty students from various grades and parishes enjoyed cake and juice and were presented with certificates. Pictured is the whole group proudly showing their certificates.

Fun Fair Success at St. Andrew

St. Andrew School Catholic School Council hosted another very successful June Fun Fair. Under the direction of Mrs. Mary Smith, parents, staff and students came together to enjoy a barbecue, face painting, fish pond, cupcake walk, penny table, raffles, silent auctions and a bake table. The School Council Chair Emily Sheppard and several of her council members and parents from the school volunteered their time to operate the various stations. This highly popular school event has been happening at St. Andrew for over 10 years and in that time Mrs. Smith, the organizer. has been very involved. This was her last Fun Fair as her youngest child Hannah leaves St. Andrew to move into grade 7. The entire St. Andrew School community are very grateful to Mrs. Smith for all her hard work and dedication to the school. We wish her much happiness in her future endeavours which we are sure will be in the schools her children all attend.

St. Andrew Students “Swing into Summer Safety”

Members of the local firefighters visited St. Andrew School on Thursday June 14th to speak about summer fire safety and to give all the students Blue Jay cards with players on one side and summer safety tips on the other. The children were all appreciative of these “Swing into Summer Safety” cards and very excited when as leaving the school yard the firefighters flashed the lights and sounded the loud horn.

Little Prospectors at St. Andrew

St. Andrew School’s grade 1/2 and JK/SK classes welcomed Mr. Brady, Joe and Jack Gouchie’s grandfather, on Tuesday June 12th. He showed them all the exciting things that a prospector uses and does in this field of interest. Mr. Brady brought in several rock samples and let the children use a black light device to find the hidden minerals in these samples. The children were all very engaged and we thank our grandparent visitor for sharing his love of prospecting.

Walking in the Light of Christ at St. Andrew

The students and staff at St. Andrew School “Walked in the Light of Christ” around their school to celebrate the opening of Catholic Education Week on Monday May 7th. The school community walked while listening to the songs Children of God by C. Walker and Walk in the Light by C. Landry. The school community has planned many activtiies to celebrate this special week. Parents have already been into the school to picnic with the child(ren) and will continue to visit the school throughout the week.

Welcome to Kindergarten at St. Andrew

On May 2nd St. Andrew School welcomed several of the children registered for JK in September to an afternoon of activities to Welcome them to Kindergarten. The classroom teacher, her student teacher and several community partners ( Minnow Lake Nursery School, Children Treatment Centre, Best Start Hub, Sudbury Public Health Unit) organized various activities for the parents and children to participate in and to learn various ways to help prepare their child for kindergarten. The Principal Melody Henry spoke of the great partnership that the Sudbury Catholic School Board has with the Learning Partnership who provide bags filled with books, and colouring and cutting tools for home use.
