St. Andrew Students Take in the Lorax

Recently, students at St Andrew had the pleasure of enjoying a movie at Silver City: The Lorax. The Lorax is a children’s book written by Dr. Seuss and first published in 1971. It chronicles the plight of the environment.

The book is recognized as a fable concernng industrialized society and the danger it poses to nature. The Once-ler never shows his face, his face is never shown in any of the story’s illustrations).

The Lorax, a small orange creature, appears from the stump of a truffula tree. He speaks for the trees and warns the Once-ler of the consequences of cutting down the truffula trees, but the Once-ler ignores him. Soon the once beautiful land becomes polluted and the fauna flee to find more hospitable habitats.

Celebrating St. Andrew

Students and staff celebrated the feast of Saint Andrew Patron Saint on Nov.30th, an important date in the annual liturgical calendar, because it determines the date of the First Sunday of Advent. Saint Andrew is the patron saint fisherman of Scotland and Russia. Andrew, the first Apostle called by Jesus, was a fisherman and he was the brother of Simon Peter. A school and parish connection was made as parents, staff and students celebrated the event at St Andrew parish with a mass, and pizza lunch at the church. As well, a special painting was sketched of St Andrew the Patron Saint and was blessed by Father Sam.

St. Andrew Students Stand Up for Peace

Students at St. Andrew school stand up for Peace as they kicked off Anti-bullying week by showing off their signs of peace. During the week, the Peace Club celebrated various activities for PEACE including singing the peace pledge that was created last year by the Peace Club.

(to the tune of twinkle, twinkle)

We Don’t have to be the same
We don’t have to think the same
We are special, We are great,
We just have to be ourselves
We solve problems peacefully
Treat each other with respect.

Fire Prevention at St. Andrew

Students in Gr.2/3 and in Gr.4/5 were invited to the New Sudbury Shopping Centre to participate in Fire Prevention Week. Fire Prevention week is celebrated and observed from Oct 9-15. The theme is “Protect Your Family From Fire.” Fire Prevention Canada provides worthwhile information and education programs than can reduce losses from senseless and predictable and preventable fire events.

Our local Fire Department is making students aware of the simple measures that can be taken to prevent a devastating fire from occurring in homes. They are ensuring that the public is well informed and educated. It’s about life safety first!

Making School and Parish Connections at St. Andrew

Father Sam, new parish priest at St Andrew the Apostle, is making connections with St. Andrew school. Father Sam visits to the school every second week, and is a welcome guest for all students as he meets the students in all classrooms from JK-GR.6 and revitalizes student’s Catholic faith through dialogue and discussion. On Wednesday, Oct. 5th, students will walk to church and attend mass where they will bring along photos of their pets for a special blessing since they will be celebrating the feast of St. Francis of Assisi known as the patron saint of animals.

A Tasty Lesson for St. Andrew Students

Dave Harding from “Nanas Kettle Corn” provided the students with a fun and informative demonstration on popcorn. He uses an authentic big open kettle, kernels popped in Canola oil and quickly pops the ‘mushroom shaped’ sweet and salty popcorn.  The popcorn is nut free, gluten free, dairy free, trans fat tree, and guilt free which is perfect as a school fundraiser.Students enjoyed a sample taste and then purchased bags of popcorn for $2.00 each.
