Update on Negotiations

You may have heard in the media that the Ontario English Catholic Teachers Association ((OECTA), representing elementary, secondary and occasional teachers in our Board voted to approve strike action.

Central bargaining is continuing between the province, unions and the Ontario Catholic School Trustees Association (OCSTA), which represents Catholic school boards at the provincial table. At present, we are not aware of any planned labour disruptions by OECTA.

Our Board continues to support efforts to reach a negotiated central settlement as the best way to avoid strikes and other labour disruptions.

The Sudbury Catholic District School Board values all of our teachers as dedicated, caring professionals committed to student success.

We will continue to keep parents, and students informed and to ensure accurate information is fully communicated to the Sudbury Catholic community should there be any developments affecting our schools.

Partners Sign Community Threat Assessment Protocol

Representatives of the Greater Sudbury Police Service, area school boards and local agencies signed a Community Threat Assessment Protocol on March 27, 2012, pledging to work together to ensure schools remain safe for students and staff.

The Community Threat Assessment Protocol is a collaborative response to student behaviour that may pose a risk to other students, staff and members of the community. Under the initiative, school boards, police and community partners will share information, advice and support. Plans will be developed to minimize risk.

“Safe schools is a shared responsibility that requires collaboration, cooperation and effective communication,” said Greater Sudbury Police Chief Frank Elsner. “This protocol will enable us to work together to assess threats and implement early interventions. Our goal is to prevent incidents or avert further escalation.” He added: “The strength of the partnership lies in the multi-disciplinary composition of the response team. The members will review relevant information and draw on a broad range of expertise. This united approach will respect the individual’s rights to privacy and the safety of all.”

The protocol is based on the work of Kevin Cameron, Director of the Alberta-based Canadian Centre for Threat Assessment and Trauma Response. Kevin Cameron is a Diplomat with the American Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress and a Board Certified Expert in Traumatic Stress. He has years of clinical experience, including working in the Child Welfare and Young Offender systems in Canada, providing high-risk assessment and intervention with children, youth and families.

The protocol outlines roles and responsibilities and defines policies and procedures. Partners will build working relationships based on mutual respect and trust. Together, they will help children and youth become happy, healthy, active, involved, and caring members of the community.
Greater Sudbury Police Service is the lead partner in the Community Threat Assessment Protocol with the four local school boards – Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario, Conseil scolaire public du Grand Nord de l’Ontario, Rainbow District School Board and Sudbury Catholic District School Board.

Additional community partners include Cambrian College, Child and Family Centre/Centre de l’enfant et de la famille/Ngodweaangizwin Aaskaagewin, Sudbury-Manitoulin Children’s Aid Society/La Société d’aide à l’enfance des district de Sudbury et du Manitoulin, Collège Boréal, Health Sciences North/Horizon Santé-Nord, and the Ministry of Children and Youth Services – Probation/Ministère des Services à l’enfance et à la jeunesse, Services de justice pour la jeunesse – Probation.

Community Inspired by Equity Advocate

On Thursday, March 24, staff from both the Sudbury Catholic District School Board and the Rainbow District School Board were given the opportunity to attend a workshop with Chris D’Souza on Building Inclusive Schools and Communities. Approximately 300 teachers, administrators, Education Assistants and community members attended the presentation at the Holiday Inn to listen to D’Souza’s important message about the eradication of discrimination in our communities.

Christopher D’Souza is a passionate advocate on this topic and has presented over 2500 lectures and workshops with a focus on human rights and inclusion to educators, law enforcement officials and health care professionals across Canada.

D’Souza has taught at the elementary, secondary and university levels and is currently teaching at the Faculty of Education, York University. D’Souza is the author of “Empowerism: A lifestyle Guide to Environmental Ethics” and a children’s book entitled “Why are all the Taxi Drivers…?”

Through his own experiences, D’Souza was able to illustrate his powerful message with stories about racism and dealing with stereotypes. He challenged the audience to look at situations that are unfair and determine what they could do to make a difference and bring about change. “I want children to grow up in a world where there is no discrimination, a world that realizes that there is just one race – the human race,” D’Souza said.

During his presentation in Sudbury, numerous case studies were provided to demonstrate how trustees, administrators and educators, parents/guardians and community members can continue to build on good current practices to make schools more inclusive. Other factors impacting school boards were also explored, such as immigration trends and poverty as well as closing the achievement gap by creating inclusive curriculum.

D’Souza prompted the audience to “Rage againstt inequity, and to foster self esteem with their students.” And encouraged the audience to “highlight what we have in common, and showcase what we have that is unique.”
Rossella Bagnato, Sudbury Catholic Superintendent closed the event by thanking D’Souza for sharing his expertise with the group as he is “not only an expert on equity and inclusive education, he is a role model that all leaders can aspire to.” Bagnato asked all to take back to their school communities D’Souza’s belief that all children “should be protected and valued, and above all, children should be loved.”

Both the Sudbury Catholic District School Board and the Rainbow District School Board are implementing Equity and Inclusive Education policies in accordance with Ministry of Education guidelines.

Sudbury Catholic Enhances Social Media Presence with Launch of Facebook Page

As a follow up to the launch of Board’s Social Media initiative, the Sudbury Catholic District School Board is extremely excited to announce that it has launched the Sudbury Catholic Facebook Page.

As with the Board’s other social media initiatives, Facebook will be used to celebrate new programming initiatives, school events, upcoming events as well as a means to disseminate any urgent or otherwise important information out to parents, guardians, students and other stakeholders.

“Recognizing that Facebook has over 500 million users and is now used by 1 in every 13 people on earth, we feel that this is an exciting announcement and are encouraged by the interest already by staff, parents, students and community alike.” stated Barry MacDonald, Chair of the Board. “We know that is certainly not a replacement of the one on one conversation of which we encourage first and foremost, however, we feel that this is one more opportunity for us to celebrate our unique programming, school and Board successes, as well as informing the community of any important information that has happened or is upcoming.”

Catherine McCullough, Director of Education for the Board echoed MacDonald’s sentiments regarding the Sudbury Catholic Facebook page launch. “The statistics with Facebook are staggering,” McCullough stated. “Its use is growing so rapidly, we knew that this was an exceptional opportunity for us to enhance our Board’s communication to the system. Along with Twitter, and our Sudbury Catholic Youtube account, our new Facebook page will provide us with one more venue to incorporate social media as a means to connect with the Sudbury community and speaks to our strong commitment to 21st century learning at Sudbury Catholic.”
