October is Attendance Awareness Month at Sudbury Catholic Schools!

This year, SCDSB is recognizing October as Attendance Awareness Month, to convey the message that every school day counts. Students will have the opportunity to participate in an Attendance Awareness Month Poster contest. 3 winners will receive gift cards. The top poster chosen will be showcased throughout all schools within the board and will be used for the remainder of the year in the attendance awareness campaign.

Dr. Elizabeth Laugeson from UCLA Visits Sudbury
On June 8, 9 and 10, selected teachers and educational assistants from SCDSB attended a PEERS training session held at Laurentian University. The training sessions were lead by Dr. Elizabeth Laugeson, assistant professor from UCLA. Dr. Elizabeth Laugeson is the founder and director of the UCLA Peers Clinic. The PEERS-Program for the Evaluation and Enrichment of Relational Skills is a parent assisted intervention focusing on teens in middle school and high school who are having difficulty making or keeping friends. The training session focused on social skills such as having conversations, entering and exiting conversations, using electronic forms of communication, choosing appropriate friends, handling teasing, bullying and other forms of social rejection experienced by students. Many strategies were discussed and provided to also address social skills for students with developmental and autism spectrum disorders.

Bellmore New Chair of the Board at SCDSB
On Tuesday, December 1, 2015 Trustee Michael Bellmore was acclaimed as the new Board Chair for the Sudbury Catholic District School Board. Born in Sudbury, Bellmore is a proud alumnus of Sudbury Catholic Schools (Immaculate Conception and St. Charles College). He was elected to the Board of Trustees in 2010, however he was elected to the former Sudbury District Roman Catholic Separate School Board in 1994 as one of the youngest ever elected, and served until 1997. A longtime and passionate advocate for education, he also served as a member of the Cambrian College Board of Governors and as a student leader at the local and provincial levels. Committeed to building a Greater Sudbury he has served on numerous boards and organizations and is currently the Chair of the Greater Sudbury Public Library Board. “I would like to thank outgoing Chair Jody Cameron for all of his leadership,” stated Bellmore after the acclamation. “I only hope that I can live up to all that he has taught me. We will be continuing on with the good work that already takes place at Sudbury Catholic and it is time to get on with business!”
Serving alongside Bellmore is Trustee Ray Desjardins who was also acclaimed as Vice Chair. This is Desjardins first time serving in this role.
How to Register Your Child at Sudbury Catholic Schools
For our Full Day Kindergarten programming, (or any other elementary grades), our elementary schools will be open for registrations beginning Monday, August 31. Contact or drop by your local elementary school on (or after) this date and staff will be on hand to assist you with all of your registration needs.

Please note, St. Andrew, St. Bernadette and St. Raphael Catholic Elementary Schools are now closed. Holy Trinity Catholic Elementary School located at 1945 Hawthorne Drive, (705) 470-5123 is our new New Sudbury K-6 Regular and French Immersion programming elementary school.
For our secondary programming, our high schools will be open for registrations beginning Monday, August 24. Contact or drop by your local secondary school on (or after) this date and staff will be on hand to assist you with all of your registration needs.
