Fire Prevention Week at Pius XII

Pius XII Full Day Kindergarten students participated in Fire Prevention Week. Samantha Theriault, Early Childhood Educator, says “the students were very excited to learn about fire safety, developing a fire escape plan, and ensuring that smoke alarms are working in home”. The Fire Prevention Week program with the Sudbury Fire Department is a great opportunity for student awareness. Skyler Caron, FDK student, learned “if your clothes catch on fire, you have to stop, drop and roll”. Skyler was honoured to sit in the drivers seat of a fire truck.

World Smile Day Celebrated at Pius XII

Students at Pius XII school celebrated World Smile Day on October 5th, 2012. On this day, people are called around the world to be thoughtful of others and use the power of a smile and a kind act to make a small difference in the world we live in. At Pius XII school, the hallways and classrooms were filled with smiles and ‘Caught in the Act of Kindness’.

Thanksgiving at Pius XII

Pius XII, Grade 1 students celebrated and learned about Thanksgiving as classroom teacher, Judy Bowes, taught the students about the importance of giving thanks, not just on Thanksgiving holiday, but on everyday. The students celebrated beginning with a procession, displaying artwork and dancing the ‘Circle of Friends’. Prior to celebrating with a healthy feast of cheese, crackers, fruit and vegetables, students expressed prayers of thanks – especially Mrs. Bowes for “letting us have a fun time celebrating Thanksgiving”.

World Teacher Day

Pius XII Catholic Elementary School Grade 2 student, Paige Del Pivo, wants to be a teacher when she grows up because “I get to read lots of books and I get to sit at the desk and check work to see if it is right or not”. October 5th is World Teacher Day and she told her teacher, Jennifer Lillie, that she is “the best teacher!”. We wish Paige all the best with her dreams to be a teacher when she grows up.

PIus XII Students Celebrate National Tree Day

Pius XII Catholic School, Grade 5 class celebrate National Tree Day on September 26th. The students in the Gr.5 class lead the school in ‘Dearness Conservation’ initiatives that support, promote and foster stewardship fo the earth and the wise use of resources; such as recycling, reusing and reducing. Classroom teacher, Amanda Schiafone says that “National Tree Day is a day when everybody can appreciate the great benefits that trees provide us – clean air, wildlife habitat, reducing energy demand and connecting with all of nature around us.”

Pius XII Donates to Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation

Students at Pius XII participated in a walk-a-thon and raised $963.15 towards Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Catholic School Council Chair, Shelley Sloan, was overwhelmed with the generosity and success of the walk-a-thon. ‘My son, Nicholas, attends Pius XII school and has Type 2 diabetes. This was a great opportunity to educate the school community about diabetes and the importance of healthy eating and exercise”. The students listened to Nicholas as he spoke about diabetes and hoping that one day, there will be a cure.

Pennies for Pediatrics at Pius XII

Pius XII Care and Development student, Nicholas Groulx, gets assistance from his classroom teacher, Noreen Pellatt by putting pennies in the jug. Pius XII students are participating in a fundraiser called ‘Pennies for Pediatrics’. The students are donating their pennies so that they can help the Children’s Treatment Centre and Health Sciences North raise money to make improvements to their hydrotherapy pool — a pool that is used by some Pius XII students.

Healthy Start To School Year

Pius XII Catholic Elementary Grade 6 student, Abigail McDonald, gets off to a healthy start to the school year by bringing a salad for lunch. “I love salad, especially with fresh cucumbers and tomatoes”. Vice Principal, Tina Timpano states that “good food, daily physical activity and a healthy environment supports learning and growth that are vital to helping students reach their full potential. It is amazing to see the students making healthy choices on a daily basis.”

Pius XII Students Celebrate International LIteracy Day

Pius XII Catholic Elementary School Grade 3 students, Caterina Pastre and Braedon Albuoy read the book, “The Golden Rule” as part of teacher Ashlee Michelutti’s lesson which discussed the importance of respecting one another and working together to promote a peaceful environment. The class linked literacy, respect and peace to International Literacy Day which was on September 8th. For over 40 years, UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) has been celebrating International Literacy Day by reminding the international community that literacy is a human right and the foundation of all learning. “It is important for all of our students to understand the importance of literacy,” Principal Laurie Zahra stated. “It is our job as educators to ensure that every student is given all the tools they need to be successful readers.”
