Clara Steele wins OAPCE Parent of the Year award

The Sudbury Catholic District School Board is very pleased to announce that Clara Steele has been selected as this year’s recipient of the OAPCE – Ontario Association of Parents in Catholic Education Parent of the Year Award. This award is presented annually to a parent volunteer that goes above and beyond to support their child’s school and/or school board and supports the aims and goals of OAPCE. Clara is the current chair of the Sudbury Catholic District School Board Parent Involvement Committee and the chair of the Marymount Academy Catholic School Council and is certainly very deserving of this award.

Her dedication to our schools and school board and to enhancing the parent – school partnership has been exemplary. She is often described as the ‘school Mom’ as she is always there to lend a hand, to support and to listen. She has indeed been an integral and active member of each of the schools that her daughters have attended. “We are proud of the recognition given to Clara Steele as parent of the year by OAPCE. It is a beautiful and well deserved acknowledgement of the dedication and passion that Clara has demonstrated for Catholic education in Greater Sudbury and indeed Ontario”, said Chair of the Board, Michael Belmore. Clara will receive her award at the annual OAPCE gala award dinner in Toronto on May 7th.

Clara was very honoured when informed of this award. “I am completely humbled by this award. I have so enjoyed the past 16 years in our schools working with wonderful students, parents, teachers and administrators. It was truly a labour of love. I wouldn’t trade a minute and I am going to miss you all very much”, said Clara Steele.

Feeding the hungry

As part of the Catholic Education Week celebrations at St. Paul School, Mme Lawrence’s grade 5-6 French Immersion class assisted those who are less fortunate by making over 160 handmade sandwiches for the Elgin Street Mission. By helping those in need, the students showed a great example of stewardship and servant leadership. Mme Lawrence is very proud of her students who collectively completed their classroom mission to make their community a better place. The Elgin Street Mission served their handmade sandwiches that evening.

Celebrating our Catholicity at St. Charles College with L.O.V.E.

Today, Catholic schools all across the province celebrated their faith with a province wide mass.

At St. Charles College, the students and staff from grades 7-12 celebrated the theme of Opening the Doors of Mercy with a mass with Celebrant Father Peter Moher at Holy Redeemer Parish in Sudbury.

Students in the Leadership classes assisted with the procession and readings.

Father Peter shared an acronym of L.O.V.E. for students to consider in their daily school and home life.

L stands for listen.
O stands for openness.
V stands for voice.
E stands for giving an effort

Youth Mental Health Walk-in offered for secondary students

The Sudbury Catholic District School Board in partnership with the Child and Family Centre is offering a unique service to all our secondary students. We will have a Youth Walk-In Service available on Tuesdays from 10:30am to 6:00pm (last one hour session at 5pm). Starting tomorrow!

Where do you go to see a clinician? Go to the Guidance Area at St. Benedict Catholic Secondary School. This service is open to all secondary students, not just those from St. Benedict.

FDK Hatches Chicks

Egg-Citing News at St. David School!

For the past 21 days the Full Day Kindergarten students at St. David Catholic School have been doing an inquiry on chickens. Through books, drama activities, art projects, videos and songs the students have been learning about the hatching process of chicks. This week the students were very excited as they watched 14 new chicks hatch from their eggs in their classroom incubator!

“At St. David School, we strive to provide our students with authentic, hands on learning opportunities. This is an inquiry the entire school gets involved in and looks forward to every year” said Lindsay Michel, FDK teacher. “It builds community through learning, fun and hands-on real life experiences”.

“I learned that when the chicks come out of the incubator they are wet and when they dry off they go in the brooder. I like that my mommy can come to my school and see what we are learning” stated Emma Carlucci, St. David FDK student.

Parents and families that live in the Donovan, Flour Mill and Louis Street areas are reminded that St. David School is hosting it’s “Welcome to Kindergarten” morning on Tuesday May 10 at 11 am. All newly registered kindergarten students and their families are encouraged to attend.
