Students at St.Charles College Stands up for the Bees!

It’s a match made for the bees. Students in Mrs. Burch’s grade 10 religion class teamed up with the elementary Life Skills students under the direction of Mrs. Chalut to make beeswax lip balm.

Both groups have been learning about the importance of protecting bees in today’s environment. They have grown plants that attract bees by promoting pollination and then decided to partner up and take it a step further.

The lip balm will be given to the mothers of the students as a kind gesture for Mother’s Day and the Business students, who are now inspired by the work of this class have started a “save the bees” campaign complete with t-shirts that will be made by our students in Open Doors and then sold to students throughout the building to raise awareness of bee education.

St.Charles College Hosts First Ever Powwow!

Many students, teachers and community members from a variety of Sudbury Catholic Schools gathered together on St. Charles College’s football field to participate in traditional dancing and music and feasted on Indigenous inspired cuisine. The students loved the opportunity to learn and celebrate this culture!

St. Charles Students incorporate Indigenous Artwork into their School

The students of grade 5, 6 and 7 at St Charles are being inspired by great Canadian native artists such as Isaac Bignell, Norval Morrisseau, Benjamin Chee Chee and Glen Rabena amongst many others. They chose a piece to base themselves on and chose their favourite colours for their image. Now their beautiful masterpieces line our halls.

Secondary Students Participate in Diversity Day!

Sudbury Catholic District School Board hosted its first ever Diversity Day for secondary students on Friday, May 5th, with the goal of breaking down stereotypes and supporting all students in our schools, in particular racialized students. The morning was spent meeting with young people from different cultures and learning about their experiences living and attending school in Sudbury. We also spent time examining who has power in our world and what we can do in the face of oppression, colonialism and white privilege. The afternoon was work time, where each high school got together with school mates and determined a campaign to bring their learning of diversity back to their schools.

A beautiful day of learning and action, determining “what we all share” as we move forward towards a more equitable future for all!

Pius XII students host Math Morning for families

This Catholic Education Week, Pius XII School hosted a Math Morning for students and their families to encourage Growth Mindset in mathematics. One of the school’s main focuses this year is developing a positive attitude towards math. As part of this goal we continue to put emphasis on the relationship between educators, students and their families. Pius XII School works closely with families because when there is a trusting, respectful relationship between the home and school, students have a better chance of being successful academically, socially and emotionally.

During the math morning, all parents and family members played fun, educational math games at school the with their children and were then given a math bag to take home. The math bag was filled with dice, cards and math game instructions to use at home to support their children to build confidence in math.
