Toronto born yo yo champ Fast Eddy McDonald recently visited St John School to demonstrate with yoyos how students need to practice in order to succeed. The workshop was fascinating and absorbing for both students and parents, who were also invited to attend. The three time Guiness World Record holder has given similar workshops across the province where he is always enthusiastically received.

Kayla Martell, a Grade 12 student at St. Charles College, was presented with the YMCA Canada Peace Medal at the Rotary Club of Sudbury’s Sunrisers breakfast meeting held at the YMCA Sudbury. Kayla has used her personal strengths and talents to work at creating a safer community. Her vision and commitment to creating a climate of respect and acceptance for everyone, regardless of differences, has resulted in a significant change in the school climate.
Kayla has assumed a leadership role with the Empowered Student Partnerships program at St. Charles College and promoted numerous initiatives designed to create awareness related to student and school safety. Her enthusiasm never wavers, resulting in the Greater Sudbury Police Services Board presenting her recently with a Certificate of Appreciation.
Kayla continues to inspire peers and teachers alike with her vision and commitment. She shares and promotes her goal of creating a climate of respect and acceptance where everyone feels valued. Congratulations Kayla!
Rebecca Mailloux, a Grade 7 student at Marymount Academy, competed in the World Karate Championship earlier this month and won a gold medal in the 12 and under age category. The competition was held in Niagara Falls, and included over 2,000 competitors representing 34 countries.
Rebecca claimed the gold medal in Team Form, and silver medals in Traditional KATA, and Open Musical KATA. She has also been selected as the Female Athlete of the Week. Rebecca will be attending the Super Grand Karate Championships during the Christmas break. Best of luck and congratulations Rebecca!
The Barbershop School Tour-411 Initiative For Change show visited students at Bishop Alexander Carter Catholic Secondary School recently to bring home key messages on human rights, racism discrimination, sexism, tolerance, and youth violence.
The 411 Initiative For Change is a Canadian based non-profit organization that provides programming to schools by merging art, culture, heritage, and social development to empower and inspire young people. In similar fashion The Barbershop Show is also a very dynamic musical and interactive educational program designed for students which focuses on human rights.
“The Barbershop Show blurs the lines between concert and hip-hop music by using comedy, spoken word, music and skits to create an innovative performance that represents everyday life. Our students were in awe and totally in tune with the performance,” states Bishop Alexander, School Principal Sherry Bortolotti who took in the performance along with her students.
Drawing from the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, the Barbershop Show examines the lives of youth in Canada as well as youths around the world that lack human rights or are affected by human rights abuse while the 411 Initiative for Change seeks to empower marginalized groups such as young women and members of ethnocultural communities.
St. Benedict recently played host to 14 girls teams and 12 boys teams for the annual Bears Classic Elementary Volleyball Tournament.
After round robin play in the boys division, St. Raphael A, Algonquin, Jessie Hamilton and St. Francis B emerged on top. St. Raphael went on to defeat Algonquin in semi-final action, while Jessie Hamilton eliminated St. Francis B. The Championship finals went to Jessie Hamilton who defeated St. Raphael in a well fought match.
In the girls division, pool winners were Marymount A, St. David A, R.L. Beattie and Jessie Hamilton. Marymount A went on to defeat Jessie Hamilton, while St. David beat Jessie Hamilton, setting up a final championship match between Marymount A and St. David. In the end, it was St. David Dragons over the Marymount Regals in a hard fought set.
All players, coaches and fans are to be commended on their fantastic
enthusiasm and sportsmanship.
Sudbury Catholic District School Board principals recently participated in an inservice session on how to implement the Ministry of Education’s new policy/program memorandum regarding Daily Physical Activity in Elementary Schools, Grades 1 to 8.
Bob Soroko from the Ontario Physical Health and Education Association (OPHEA) provided the principals with a framework of daily physical fitness activities as an important part of making schools healtheir places for students to learn.
Rossella Bagnato, Academic Superintendent of Education for the Sudbury Catholic District School Board was also in attendance at the Ministry’s presentation. “Our principals were the first in the province to receive this workshop,” stated Bagnato. “While the Ministry recognizes there will be differences in approaches and implementation, all elementary schools are expected to make their best efforts to ensure that all students are receiving at least 20 minutes of sustained moderate to vigorous daily physical activity during instructional time as soon as possible”, concluded Bagnato.
Over the next few weeks the Sudbury Catholic District School Board will begin the work of developing a Board Action Plan with full implementation in all schools by September 2006.
The Lung Association is pleased to announce Laps for Lungs. It is a fun filled activity that combines fundraising and health promotion that directly benefits children living with asthma and our school.
The Lung Association is a registered charity that funds respiratory research, promotes better management of asthma, helps those with chronic lung disease, promotes a tobacco-free society and addresses the effects of air quality on lung health.

Immaculate Conception School has won the Sudbury Catholic District School Board Fitness Challenge. The goal of the program is to lower the resting and exercise heart rates of the Board’s students over the course of the school year. Staff and students in the Junior Division participated in this program under the supervision of Mrs. Karole Lariviere (Fitness Challenge School Co-Ordinator)
The heart rates were measured three times during the 2004 – 2005 school year. Students from Immaculate Conception School received a plaque from Sudbury Catholic District School Board’s Chairperson, Mrs. Paula Peroni during a recent board meeting. Thank you to Mr. John Tarini, Principal of Corpus Christi School, for co-ordinating this Board wide Fitness Challenge.
Grade 5 and 6 students from St. Michael Catholic School took part in the City of Greater Sudbury Public Library’s Introduction to Research Program recently. Students learned how to research topics by author, subject and/or title, on-line through the website at the library’s main branch.
Books and other resource materials can also be identified and reserved by students on-line from home at the main library located on Mackenzie Street or at any of its satellite branches through the use of the student’s name, pin number and library card number. The City of Greater Sudbury provided free round trip bus transportation to the students for the launch.
