Inaugural Personal Support Worker Class Graduates from St. Albert

Family and friends gathered in the gym at St Albert Adult Learning Centre on February 25th, 2011 to celebrate with the students of the school’s inaugural Personal Support Worker graduating class. Nineteen students made up the graduating class and, as well as a Personal Support Worker Diploma, several students also received their Secondary School Diploma. Cassandra MacGregor, Principal of the school addressed the students and spoke about how proud the staff and community is of the group. “By the year 2020, statistics say that one in every five Greater Sudbury residence will be over the age of sixty-five, and the need for this service is growing rapidly,” MacGregor said. “ Through their perseverance and determination, this class has demonstrated great skill and knowledge, and I know that my family and friends will be in good hands if and when these students’ skills are ever required.”
Deputy Mayor Jocelyn Landry-Altmann and Sudbury Catholic Board Chair Barry MacDonald echoed MacGregor’s sentiments and also congratulated the class for their courage and will to succeed in the program.
Numerous community partners and agencies were also on hand to support the students as many did on the job placements with the different organizations. Several of the students have already been offered jobs beginning immediately after the graduation. Valedictorian of the class, Brenda Legrow, spoke to the group about their success and voiced her elation at finally reaching this stage. “It is through the strength of our minds, our bodies and our hearts, that we have made it here today,” Legrow said. “And we need to thank ourselves for overcoming all of our own trials and tribulations and making it this far in our journey.”

The next group of students has already begun their classes this past January and the staff of St. Albert expects the interest in this program to steadily increase over the next year as with the growing aging population, the need for this type of job is rapidly expanding.

One Hundred Days of Junior Kindergarten at St.Francis

Junior kindergarten students at St. Francis celebrated the 100th day of school. Students brought their collections of 100 items such as pennies, beads, balloons, lego blocks and even yarn! Students sang their 100th day song to celebrate and received 100th day of school certificates to congratulate them on attending their first 100 days of school at St. Francis. Students listened to stories and even created their own class storybook about 100 foods they wish they could eat! The students ended the day with a special 100th day of school prayer.

National Flag Day at St. Francis School

Students in Mrs. Visentin’s junior kindergarten class at St. Francis School celebrated National Flag Day on February 15th. Students proudly painted their own Canadian flags to celebrate the day and learned that their country’s flag is 45 years old. Students have been reciting their pledge of citizenship and singing the national anthem since commencing school. It was a truly patriotic day for the junior kindergarten students.

St. Francis Students Wear Pink for Anti-Bullying Day

On February 23, St. Francis students from kindergarten to grade eight wore pink for Anti-Bullying Day. The young students in the junior kindergarten class have been listening to important lessons from various storybooks this week about bullying. Students learned an important lesson about kindness and tolerance from Steve Seskin and Allen Shamblin’s book entitled, Don’t Laugh at Me. The book encouraged the students to be kind to others and accept our differences.

St. Anne School Fair Is “Electrifying”!

Have you ever wondered about the splatter patterns of blood, how dimples can affect a plane when it is flying, which gum produces the biggest bubble, or how colour affects living things? If so, St. Anne School was the place to be for the first segment of this year’s Sudbury Catholic Board’s Science Fair.
Over the past 2 months, the intermediate students at St. Anne School have been investigating and researching many different science topics. A wide range of projects in both English and French were presented to teachers and students within the school. Out of school judges scored the projects on scientific knowledge, presentation results, application, and written reports. Winners were selected to advance to the next stage of presentations taking place at St. Francis School in early March. Congratulations to all students for their hard work, dedication, and overall great efforts!

St. Charles College Thinks Pink

Recently, St. Charles College had a fundraiser for the Breast cancer equipment fund and raised $500 in one day. The students dress in Red and Pink and donated a loonie to support this cause. The ladies of Angels in Pink also made cupcakes which they sold at lunch time and more more money for the cause. Organizer and S.C.C. teacher Paola Gutcher felt that this was a great opportunity to show students how important it is to give back to the community and was proud of the support shown by the school.

Sudbury Catholic Enhances Social Media Presence with Launch of Facebook Page

As a follow up to the launch of Board’s Social Media initiative, the Sudbury Catholic District School Board is extremely excited to announce that it has launched the Sudbury Catholic Facebook Page.

As with the Board’s other social media initiatives, Facebook will be used to celebrate new programming initiatives, school events, upcoming events as well as a means to disseminate any urgent or otherwise important information out to parents, guardians, students and other stakeholders.

“Recognizing that Facebook has over 500 million users and is now used by 1 in every 13 people on earth, we feel that this is an exciting announcement and are encouraged by the interest already by staff, parents, students and community alike.” stated Barry MacDonald, Chair of the Board. “We know that is certainly not a replacement of the one on one conversation of which we encourage first and foremost, however, we feel that this is one more opportunity for us to celebrate our unique programming, school and Board successes, as well as informing the community of any important information that has happened or is upcoming.”

Catherine McCullough, Director of Education for the Board echoed MacDonald’s sentiments regarding the Sudbury Catholic Facebook page launch. “The statistics with Facebook are staggering,” McCullough stated. “Its use is growing so rapidly, we knew that this was an exceptional opportunity for us to enhance our Board’s communication to the system. Along with Twitter, and our Sudbury Catholic Youtube account, our new Facebook page will provide us with one more venue to incorporate social media as a means to connect with the Sudbury community and speaks to our strong commitment to 21st century learning at Sudbury Catholic.”

Community Partnership Benefits Students at St. David School

N.O.A.H. (New Opportunities and Hope), a committee made up of citizens who reside in the Flour Mill and Donavan areas of the city and the Greater Sudbury Police Service Neighbourhood Policing Unit worked in a pro-active capacity to host a fun filled day on the ice for over 100 pre teens and families. The purpose of the “winter safety” event was to provide an opportunity for youth who are from the Flour Mill and Donovan areas of Greater Sudbury to participate in a planned snowmobile ride and to participate in a variety of winter safety workshops.

Approximately 50 community minded snowmobilers provided area youth the opportunity to go for a snowmobile ride which was coordinated by members of the Greater Sudbury Police Service and S.T.O.P. officers. Following the ride, the snowy and frozen landscape served as a classroom where the youth participated in practical winter safety workshops and activities including first aid, healthy lifestyle choices, pre-trip planning, outdoor survival skills, risk and prevention of frostbite/hypothermia and winter water hazards. Participants will witness a live water ice rescue.

Jennifer Gran, grade 5 teacher at St. David Catholic School, stated that she was “impressed by the volunteerism, high level of community organization, and basic emphasis on fun and laughter throughout the day”. Gran stated.” My students learned valuable lessons in winter safety, were able to see local police as their friends and allies and were able to enjoy the winter weather while laughing and learning all at the same time”.
