St. David School Promotes Healthy Life Choices with “The Big Crunch”
The students and staff at St. David Catholic School participated in a special day of “good food education, ending in a massive, synchronized bite into a crunchy apple”. The school prepared for this special day playing student created public service announcements celebrating the benefits of choosing locally grown foods and eating healthy. St. David School works throughout the year to promote healthy eating habits, the benefits of daily physical activity and positive self esteem. “It was a fun activity to support positive lifestyle choices. The students enjoyed the fresh apple and especially enjoyed that this learning experience was done as a school community”, said Ms. Cimino, St. David School Grade 1 teacher.
St. David School welcomes the Indigenous duo, Waaban
Mrs. Fielding and her St. David School Native Language students gathered together to welcome the Indigenous duo Waaban, which means “first break of light in the morning” in Anishnaabemowin. Nathalie Restoule (former Miss Wikwemikong and Anishinabek Nation Youth Representative) and Jordan Mowat first shared their gift of song and drumming with a concert for the students. Then they shared their struggles growing up with bullying in schools. They passed on advice on how they overcame their struggles by the power of resilience and having pride in their culture. After the young role models delivered their motivational speeches, they “broke bannock” with the inspired students during the Native Language Feast in honour of Nathalie and Jordan’s classroom visit.
Alpine ski coach Dan Bartolucci honoured
Dan Bartolucci has been coaching Alpine Skiing for 14 years at Marymount Academy and OFSAA recognized his contributions to this sport by honouring him with the “OFSAA LEADERSHIP IN SCHOOL SPORT AWARD” at the banquet on February 23rd.
The OFSAA Leadership in School Sport Award is presented annually at each OFSAA Championship to a teacher-coach who has made a significant contribution to the educational athletic program. The recipient of this award exemplifies the values of fair play and good sportsmanship, while promoting enjoyment, personal growth and educational achievement through school sport.
Dan has coached his Alpine Skiing team to many city and NOSSA championships and has sent skiers to OFSAA for the past 6 years. His dedication, not only to Alpine Skiing but to Soccer, Badminton, and Flag Football make him an exemplary coach and leader. Congratulations Dan on this well deserved recognition! We are extremely proud of you!
Regional Knights of Columbus Free Throw winner
Dante Bisschops, grade 5 student at St. Raphael School, won the Regional Knights of Columbus Free Throw competition. He made 20 out of 25 baskets in total.
MMA Junior and Senior bands have great showing at Northern Ontario Music Festival
The Marymount Academy Junior and Senior Concert Bands competed at the Northern Ontario Music Festival this past week, Feb. 25-27, and the results are in!
Congratulations to the Junior Concert Band for their ranking of “Silver Plus” and a huge congratulations to the Senior Concert Band who achieved a “Gold” standard of performance! A first for MMA in 5 years! Along with a Gold standard of performance, the Senior Concert Band also received an invitation to the National Festival.
Students and staff are thrilled with the results of their hard work and will continue to work towards performance goals. Next up is the Kiwanis Music Festival and back by popular demand, MMA’s spring pops concert on Thursday June 4th. Hope to see you there!
Random acts of kindness at Bishop Alexander Carter CSS
Random acts of kindness are not so random at Bishop Alexander Carter CSS this month. Grade 12 students have been working diligently to bring smiles to students’ faces both at the school and abroad. The students in the Grade 12 Religion class handed out free cake to fellow students, visited the Elizabeth Centre and handed out Valentine’s Day cards to the seniors at the centre and bought coffee for people behind them in the drive through line at local coffee shops.
BAC students send cuddly emisarries abroad
Have you ever dreamt of traveling abroad? Of exploring and learning more about other cultures? Well, you can if you are a cute stuffed animal. Grade 12 Religion students at Bishop Alexander Carter CSS are exchanging stuffed animals with classroom in Japan, Taiwan and Costa Rica. These stuffed animals will report back to their home school to tell the students about their many experiences. This picture shows Horton the black bear that was sent to Japan. A stuffed beaver was sent to Taiwan and moose to Costa Rica. Let’s wait and see what these cute stuffed animals have to say about their cultural experiences in the other countries.
Ice Sculptures at St. Andrew
Grade 5/6 Core French students took a well enjoyed break from their Fêtons l’Hiver textbook and worked cooperatively to plan and execute the creation of miniature ice sculptures. Students are now in the process of putting their experience and newly attained vocabulary to use in the creation of an instructional video. Bravo! Pictured is the class with their creations.
