Bishop Alexander Carter Teacher Honoured at Ontario Council of Technological Educators Awards!
Congratulations to Gaston Therriault who was presented with the Ontario Council of Technological Educators award on May 11th. He was nominated for the award because of his commitment to excellence in teaching and his support of the Technological Education Program. Mr. Therriault is a Co-Op/OYAP teacher at Bishop Alexander Carter CSS. It was no surprise to his principal, Mrs. C. MacGregor that he won the award.
“Mr. Therriault is a dedicated teacher who always has the best interest of students in mind”, she said. “He works diligently to place students in coop placements based on their interests and many students have been registered into the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program and have been accumulating hours. The entire staff at Bishop is proud of Mr. Therriault’s accomplishments and dedication to student achievement”.
There’s no place like home – Bishop Alexander Carter performs Wizard of Oz!
Bishop Alexander Carter CSS put on a magical performance of the Wizard of Oz! Dorothy, Scarecrow, Tin Man and the Cowardly Lion were all present as the students dazzled the audience in both their performances. Congratulations to all the students involved in this production, your hard work certainly paid off!
Secondary Students Participate in Diversity Day!
Sudbury Catholic District School Board hosted its first ever Diversity Day for secondary students on Friday, May 5th, with the goal of breaking down stereotypes and supporting all students in our schools, in particular racialized students. The morning was spent meeting with young people from different cultures and learning about their experiences living and attending school in Sudbury. We also spent time examining who has power in our world and what we can do in the face of oppression, colonialism and white privilege. The afternoon was work time, where each high school got together with school mates and determined a campaign to bring their learning of diversity back to their schools.
A beautiful day of learning and action, determining “what we all share” as we move forward towards a more equitable future for all!
Bishop Carter Alexander hosts Health and Wellness Day for students
Bishop Alexander Carter C.S.S hosted it’s second annual Health and Wellness Day on Thursday May 4th 2017. The day was organized to help give students several different options on how to deal with stress and become more physically active. The day was divided to give each grade two classroom sessions along with two active sessions throughout the day. Lunch was prepared by students and staff for all participants. A nice warm bowl of soup along with greek salad and either egg or chicken salad sandwiches definitely added to the event and the promotion of healthy eating. The event concluded with a great motivational speech by author Connor LaRocque.

Bishop Alexander Carter students help clean-up the community for Catholic Education Week
On May 3rd, 2017, students at B.A.C.C.S.S. participated in a neighbourhood clean-up. Stewardship of the environment is a very important Catholic Social Teaching which it is re-enforced every year during Catholic Education Week. The students had fun bonding with friends, while enjoying some fresh air and exercise. The neighbourhood clean-up not only provides an opportunity to strengthen community relations, but instills a sense of pride and ownership in the students with regard to environmental responsibiity. Dozens of garbage bags were filled and a good time was had by all!

Board visits Chongqing #37 Secondary School in China
On November 11th 2016, the Sudbury Catholic District School Board had the pleasure of visiting Chongqing #37 Secondary School in China. We visited a class, the grounds, the bridge of success and had the privilege of witnessing the morning daily physical activity.
This school offers a high quality education to over 4,000 students from grades 7 to 12. Hopefully, some of the staff from the school will come to Sudbury to visit our schools and to discuss the possibility of a “sister” school partnership in the future. The school celebrated it’s 60th anniversary in 2015 and we are convinced that it will continue to grow in the next 60 years thanks to its dedicated and competent staff, as well as its visionary leadership.

Attendance Awareness Month poster contest
October was Attendance Awareness Month at Sudbury Catholic Schools and the Attendance Counsellors held a poster contest. In order to engage students from FDK to Grade 12, the poster contest promoted the importance of regular school attendance. It was a huge success with 447 students participating.
