Next year, senior St. Charles College students are invited to travel to Costa Rica, while earning a senior credit. Students will be able to visit a remote ecolodge, work with local children, go surfing in the ocean, learn some Spanish, and lots of other adventure activities.

In elementary sports action, Bishop Alexander Carter hosted the Angels Elementary Basketball Tournament on March 3rd and 4th. For the second time in as many tournaments the St. Benedict Boys team came away with gold. Congratulations Bears and to all who participated in this great event.
CTV’s Claude Sharma recently visited St. Benedict to meet two international students attending the school.
Giuseppe was awarded the Community Builders Award for Sports and Recreation. He had an outstanding career as a soccer player before becoming a qualified soccer coach. He is the boys’ coach for St. Benedict, head coach of the women’s and men’s programs at Cambrian College, the head coach at the Greater Sudbury Soccer Club, a coach developer with the Ontario Soccer Association and he coaches at the Northern Soccer Academy. He says he believes in Sudbury soccer and in raising the bar of the sport in the city. He acknowledges he is highly invested so, of course, he advocates strongly for a soccer centre, including a bubble or dome so local players have the same advantages as others across the province during the winter months. He gives a nod to former coaches, players’ parents, and officials, not wanting to miss anyone who played a role in his success. He specifically mentions his mom, Antonietta. “If I didn’t have my mother as my #1 support system, this soccer thing never would have happened.”

St. David Catholic School held an Ash Wednesday celebration to mark the beginning of the season of Lent. Lent is a time when Catholics prepare for Easter by fasting, repentance and moderation. In the Old Testament, people used ashes as a sign of repentance.
The students and staff of St. David Catholic School spoke about how to better walk with God in practical terms. This means being kind to each other and supporting each other in times of need. According to the school vice principal, Mr. Colin Lapalme, “As a school community, it is beautiful when we can come together and celebrate our faith”.
Students and staff at St. David Catholic School leaned about how traditional First Nation hand drumming represents the heartbeat of mother earth. Elder, teacher, and musician, Verna Hardwick, spent the afternoon with various classes at St. David School teaching students about the importance of the drum in Indigenous cultures. Students learned new songs and had the opportunity to participate in a drumming circle. “It was a beautiful experience not only for my students, but also for myself. Mrs. Hardwick was a wonderful teacher. She encouraged the students to build their self confidence by singing and drumming proudly. She also shared traditional teachings, some Ojibwe words and phrases and most importantly stressed the importance of respect with the students and participants”, stated grade 3/4 teacher Ginny Long.
In keeping with DJ’s memory, the Winter Carnival Committee has named their annual floor hockey tournament The DJ Hancock Memorial Tournament. The idea was first presented by members of the Student Council, and the Winter Carnival Committee supported it 100%. Money generated from the Memorial Tournament will be donated to MADD Canada.
The Sudbury Catholic District School Board (SCDSB) is pleased to welcome three international students to its school communities for the second semester. One student from Vietnam and one student from China are attending St. Benedict Catholic Secondary School while another student from Japan is attending St. Charles College.
The SCDSB has successfully hosted international students and exchange students in the past; however, these new students are a direct result of the school board’s recent international recruitment efforts. Recruitment initiatives aim to boost enrollment as well as enrich the educational experience of all students by affording them the opportunity to interact and learn with students from varied countries which will help them to become more global citizens. The SCDSB also hopes that its recruitment initiatives will attract newcomers to the Greater Sudbury community as students may decide to pursue a post-secondary education in the city and someday make Sudbury their home.
The majority of international students stay with local families and pay a monthly amount for room and board. The Sudbury Catholic District School Board utilizes the services of the Canada Homestay Network in order to find and assess suitable host families. The SCDSB currently has students who have applied to study for the 2017-18 school year and will need more families to host these students. Multi-Media Mondays is a new after school Club at Pius XII which supports students in developing self-expression, confidence, relationships with peers, and artistic creativity. Students have the opportunity to experience Karaoke, Improv, Dance, and Rap Battles, just to name a few.
