Sudbury Catholic Schools welcome 11 international students!

We were honoured to welcome our international students to Sudbury Catholic Schools for the 2017-2018 school year! The 11 students are from various places in China and Vietnam and are completing studies in our Secondary schools this year.

We welcomed our new friends with a traditional Canadian BBQ, featuring chicken and porketta sausage cooked by St. Benedict Catholic Secondary School teacher Mike Sipos (winner of Cook for Me Sudbury in 2015).

We are so grateful to our host families for guiding our students in their journey and thankful for our wonderful staff for their leadership in providing educational opportunities for all. We hope all students involved in the program have a successful and inspirational year!

Sudbury Catholic Schools Host First Ever International Student Summer Camp!

This summer, students from Hangzhuo, China joined students from Sudbury Catholic Schools to attend a week long summer camp!

The camp involved daily lessons at Holy Cross Catholic Elementary School taught by Sudbury Catholic Schools teachers and daily outings to Sudbury attractions.
The students enjoyed learning more about each other’s culture and traditions throughout the camp experience!

Students’ in Mrs. Bock’s Language Arts class at St. Charles College Elementary were Skyping today.

They recently developed a soundtrack for the book by author Paul Toffanello, “Popchuck’s Revenge”. They had to find songs that connected to the story they read.

The top selections were presented by Skype to the author who hails from Timmins. Toffanello is now sharing the music selections with his movie producers!

Toffanello visited the students earlier in the school year to work with them on writing for a purpose. At the time, he shared the first eight chapters of his latest novel. He’s a former English teacher, Principal and Director of Education.

Flag Football Team – High School Team of the Decade (Inaugural Award)

The Flag Football team was nominated for the first time as “High School Team of the Year” after their impressive undefeated season once again this year. The awards committee decided that this was the year to start a new award called the “High School Team of the Decade,” and with their current string of six consecutive city championships, there was no better recipient than our very own Regals Flag Football Team. The Chairman and creator of the Sudbury Sports Hall of Fame made the presentation and extended his congratulations on this incredible run. Team Members Kayla Yitts, Tyanna Soucy, Jade Davies, Cassidy Burton, Allison Byrnes, and coaches Julia Boschetto, Tori Jewell, and Dan Bartolucci were on hand to receive the award.

Marymount Students Paint Mural to Honour the Sudbury Blue Door Soup Kitchen!

Last week, the Sudbury Blue Door Soup Kitchen celebrated 35 years of “opening doors for people in need”. Marymount Marymount Academy has a long-standing partnership with the Blue Door Soup Kitchen – for the past several years, the Grade 9 students have had the opportunity to volunteer there as a way of putting their Religion curriculum into practice through service to others. This year, for the anniversary, Marymount art students contributed by painting this beautiful mural across their interior wall, making it a focal point for the centre. Congratulations Mykenzie Douglas, Shaleigh Wisniewski & Taylor Lapierre-Grignon for all your hard work!
