Grade 6 students in Miss Scola’s class, at Holy Cross Elementary, acknowledged National Indigenous People’s Day by holding group discussions and participating in an art activity. In the morning, students viewed “In Our Words,” a series of videos from the Ministry of Education that explores the events that took place between Europeans and Indigenous peoples in the early years of settlement, in what is now called Canada. Following each video, students lead discussions on their thoughts of early colonization and how the Indigenous Peoples were treated. In the afternoon, students took part in an art activity that was inspired by Contemporary Indigenous artist Faye Heavyshield. The Grade 6 students are hopeful that the Truth and Reconciliation Commission will lead to a renewed relationship between the Government of Canada and the Indigenous Peoples through respect, rights, co-operation and partnership.

St. Charles Chelmsford raises over $20,000 for NOFCC!
St. Charles Catholic Elementary School held their 15th Annual Johnathan Hetu Walk on June 21, 2019. Johnathan was a student there when he passed away from cancer 15 years ago. David Nicholls, a teacher at the school has organized and held this fundraiser close to his heart for just as many years having been the one who started it. Mr. Nicholls recently passed away unexpectedly.
The St. Charles Catholic Elementary School community came together to raise over $20,000 to go toward the NOFCC (Northern Ontario Families of Children with Cancer). The money will be used to support families during medical appointments, treatments and more.
Holy Cross School proves Cubs Have Heart!
After one of their students experienced a medical emergency earlier this Spring, Holy Cross Catholic Elementary School Cubs banded together to participate in A Walk for Kyle. Students and staff raised funds through fundraisers to help Kyle’s family with their medical costs throughout his recovery. The school came together with a special Prayer service and concluded with a walk outside to show their support. Way to prove that Cubs Have Heart!

Students Participate in First Ever SCDSB Model UN Conference
Secondary students from all four secondary schools were able to participate in the first ever SCDSB Model UN Conference hosted at St. Charles College. The event was an opportunity for local and international students to come together and unpack an issue from an international perspective.
Approximately 75 students participated in this first-ever event! Students worked to find possible solutions within the United Nations framework to resolve the global human trafficking crisis. The event leveraged diversity and encouraged participants to develop global citizenship skills!
Students were awarded in the following categories:
Best Delegates: Liam Couisneau (St. Charles College) and Rosaria Nero (St. Benedict)
Honourable mentions: Madison Penrose (Bishop Alexander Carter) and Amy Godin (Marymount Academy)
Best international delegates: Ryan Dinh (St. Charles College) and Zihao Wang (St. Benedict)

Living As Joyful Disciples: Sudbury Catholic Schools Celebrate Catholic Education Week
The Sudbury Catholic District School Board joined school boards across the province in celebrating Catholic Education Week held on May 5-May 10, 2019. Catholic Education week is an opportunity to celebrate the contributions our Catholic school make in the lives of our students and in our community.
The theme of this year’s week was Living as Joyful Disciples. Throughout the week, schools completed prayer celebrations, classroom activities and community led events that focused on the following sub themes:
- Rooted in Prayer
- Living in Community
- Doing Justice and Creating Hope
- Journeying Together in Faith
- Sharing the Good news
Specific school highlights included:
- St. James School hosted a Sounding of the Drums Feast: Anishinaabemowin language class students were joined by Elders from Atikameksheng Anishnawbek and partners from the Child and Youth Centre to create hand drums and birth and feast the new drums.
- Students and parents at St. Francis school completed mindfulness yoga sessions to focus on their wellness and faith.
- Holy Trinity hosted a school-wide math hour on May 8, welcoming parents to join students in their classrooms for activities.
- St. Charles College hosted their third annual Pow Wow, welcoming elementary schools, Elders and community partners.
- Marymount Academy completed a THINKFast fundraising initiative to help raise funds to tackle poverty.
“One of our strategic pathways as a Board is to strengthen our faith-based, inclusive and equitable community,” said Joanne Bénard, Director of Education for the Sudbury Catholic District School Board. “Catholic Education Week allows our staff and students to explore this theme in a variety of different ways. We thank our hardworking and dedicated staff as well as the many community partners who have helped make these events possible.”
St. Benedict Catholic Secondary School Receives Award from EQAO
The Sudbury Catholic District School Board is pleased to announce that St. Benedict Catholic Secondary School is being recognized for its achievements by EQAO. They have been selected as a recipient of the 2018 Dr. Bette M. Stephenson Recognition of Achievement Award.
Each year, EQAO recognizes schools that support student achievement in Ontario and use EQAO data to develop action plans to increase student achievement over time. For the 2018 year, EQAO is celebrating schools that support student success in mathematics. As a recipient of this award, St. Benedict has fostered strong attitudes toward math over the last three school years.
By creating a culture of inquiry and collaboration, St. Benedict built a positive attitude toward mathematics, working with staff and students to expand math vocabulary, understand concepts from various points of view and evaluate student work in a team setting. All of these strategies have paved the way for growth for both staff and students.
“I have had the pleasure of working with both the elementary and secondary math teams for a number of years focussing on strong math instruction,” said Laura Kuzenko, Principal at St. Benedict Catholic Secondary School. “It is clear that our grade 7 and 8 math model works and that it creates not only collaboration with the staff but also students who are comfortable in their respective math classes and working at their full potential.”
“We are so proud of St. Benedict and this accomplishment,” said Joanne Bénard, Director of Education at the Sudbury Catholic District School Board. “Staff and students have committed to improving both their academic successes and the culture of mathematics at their school. Secondary Students to Compete at Skills Ontario
Five Sudbury Catholic Secondary Students will be competing at the Skills Ontario From May 6 -8, 2019 in Toronto.
Drake Wickman from Bishop Alexander Carter will be competing in the CNC Wood sign making competition. Easton Laframboise and Griffin Howe from St. Benedict C.S.S will be competing in the carpentry category. St. Charles College will also be represented with student Violet Landrie competing in graphic design-presentation and Sarah Harper competing in the graphic design – studio production category.
