Milena Raso, a Grade 11 student at Marymount Academy, came up with a creative solution when her Co-op placement was cancelled due to Covid-19. During the school closure period, Milena has spent hundreds of hours making masks for the Sudbury community. Each mask costs just $5.00 and is made with love. Milena is donating all of the money raised to NOFCC (Northern Ontario Families of Children with Cancer). Congratulations Milena for finding a creative way to complete your Co-op. We are very proud of your dedication to your schooling and your community.

Daily Trivia Winners Announced!
Throughout June, we challenged our students to complete the Daily Trivia Challenge! There were two different categories: a scavenger hunt themed challenge for Kindergarten to Grade 6 students and a trades trivia challenge for Grade 7 – Grade 12 students. 32 elementary students participated from six different schools and 50 secondary students participated from all of our secondary schools. Our two winners are:
• Addisyn Doherty from Pius XII School
• Esther Oseni-K. from St. Benedict School
The two winners were happy to complete the challenges and eager to get the correct answers for each day.
“The contest was a great opportunity for all students. I am glad to have participated in the contest because I had learned a lot from the experience. I would like to say thank you for organizing such a great trivia challenge contest,” said Esther.
“I really enjoyed completing the scavenger hunt, it was so fun to find the answer to the clue around my house each day!,” said Addisyn.

Three St. Benedict Students Receive Business Grants from Government of Ontario
Three St. Benedict Catholic Secondary School students have received business grants from the Government of Ontario through the program Summer Company. Students were required to submit an application which includes a business plan and cash flow. Once approved, the projects will receive a maximum grant of $3000 to cover start-up costs and complete program requirements. The students will also receive advice and mentorship from local business leaders to help guide them.
The founder of Active Soul, Mackenzie Coggins has followed her passion within the fitness industry, by developing a business that inspires confidence. Active Soul will be launching their first ever comfort fit resistance bands that will intensify workouts for anyone. Mackenzie has taken it upon herself to ensure these resistance bands are made out of eco-friendly cotton as well as a premium non-slip and comfort grip hand woven design. Sudbury Catholic Student Places Third in Skills Ontario Challenge
St. John Catholic Elementary School student Sofia Brine has placed third in the Skills Ontario Wacky Hair Challenge. Sudbury Catholic students have been participating in the #SkillsAtHome Challenge Series presented by Skills Ontario.
Sofia was excited to enter the contest and get creative with her hair! “I wanted to enter the contest because I love playing with my dolls hair and I love ice cream! What’s better than ice cream hair!?” she exclaimed.
The #SkillsAtHome challenge allows students to explore the skilled trades and tech through a series of challenges without ever leaving home. Challenges have included: Rollercoaster Challenge, Cookie Challenge, Wacky Hair Challenge, Marshmallow Bridge Challenge and Tinfoil Boat Challenge. The next #SkillsAtHome challenge is underway and is a paper tower challenge. Submissions will be due on June 22, 2020.

Students Participate in #SkillsAtHome Challenge Series Challenge #5 – Tinfoil Boat
Students in Ms. Reale’s Grade 1 class at Holy Cross School and Mrs. Dupuis Grade 5/6 at St. Francis School joined the fun by entering the #SkillsAtHome Challenge #5. Challengers were to create a boat out of ordinary household Tin Foil that could hold as many coins as possible!
The Challenger’s submission posts were to include:
• Picture of blueprint design
• Picture of total weight held
• Video of boat in water with coins being placed in.
The skills reinforcement in this activity were; design & planning, communication, creativity and attention to detail while showcasing the skilled trades of a Marine Engine Technician and an Ironworker Generalist.

Students Participate in #SkillsAtHome Challenge Series
Students at Sudbury Catholic Schools are joining in on the fun with the various challenges hosted by Skills Ontario and Edge Factor . There are 16 #SkillsAtHome contests that explore the skilled trades and tech through a series of challenges on Twitter, testing student’s skills without ever leaving home.
Challenge Number #3, involved students using their creativity to create a wacky hair style.

St. David School Celebrates Students During Catholic Education Week
During Catholic Education week, we need to count on the faith within us and believe that our school community will support one another and work together to promote the faith in others. Hope brings us closer together during these challenging times and allows us to reflect on what is important in life. During the month of May we celebrate the virtue of empathy, which allows us to continue to build relationships with our families and school community partners.
In light of Catholic Education week, St. David School felt their students should be recognized and celebrated for their efforts in giving back to their school community in various ways. The students selected received a $100.00 PC gift card for their random acts of kindness, leadership and inspiration, which was virtually displayed on their online learning platforms and social media. These students ignite hope in their classmates, peers, teachers and families as they display their sheer motivation to persevere even when times get tough, like this pandemic crisis we are all facing.I would like to thank PC Loblaw’s for giving St. David School the flexibility and opportunity to celebrate our students and families during this difficult time of Covid-19. I would also like to highlight our Educational Assistants for making this day possible for our students. Without your genuine care, love and kindness, this opportunity for giving back would not have happened without you.
Sudbury Catholic Students Spread Kindness to Seniors this Mother’s Day
Students at Sudbury Catholic Schools participated in a challenge that was posted by Goshenite Seniors Services to create 500 Mother’s Day cards for seniors in the Sudbury area.
Not being in a physical classroom didn’t stop Mrs. Cimino and her Grade 1 students at St. David School from coming together to help Goshenite Seniors Services.
“It is especially important during these difficult times to provide students with authentic opportunities for them to act as caring and responsible citizens,” said Mrs. Cimino.
Milena Raso, a grade 11 student at Marymount Academy is currently enrolled in the Specialized High Skills Major for Non-Profit Industry. She too jumped at the opportunity to bring positivity to members of our community.
“I am very blessed to have my grandmother living with me and
listening to her stories about not having technology and other modern-day
conveniences. It shows me how life has changed. Hearing it first-hand, rather
than from reading it in a textbook makes it much more real to me. I think it’s
important for youth to be more active in caring for our elders and realize that
we have a lot to learn from them,” she explained.
Cards will be sent directly to Goshenite Seniors Services who will distribute
them over the weekend.
