Sudbury Catholic District School Board Encouraged by Students’ Scores on Recent Provincial OSSLT’s

Grade 10 students from the Sudbury Catholic District School Board continue to score well on Ontario Secondary School Literacy Tests (OSSLT) written in March 2007. The Board’s overall success rate of 89 percent for “Fully Participating Students” was consistent with previous scores surpassing the Provincial average of 84 percent. Marymount Academy lead the charge with a 100 percent success rate for “Fully Participating Students” followed closely by St. Benedict CSS with 91 percent, St. Charles College with 88 percent and Bishop Carter CSS with an 83 percent pass rate.

The OSSLT, introduced in 2002, measures whether students are meeting the minimum standard for literacy across all subjects to the end of Grade 9, according to the expectations set out in The Ontario Curriculum. Meeting this standard is a requirement for obtaining an Ontario Secondary School Diploma and positions students for success in their life beyond high school.

Rossella Bagnato, Interim Director of Education for the Sudbury Catholic Board is thrilled with the efforts of her students. “We are extremely pleased with the test results of our
Grade 10 students,” stated Bagnato. “The results from the Province of Ontario’s EQAO Assessment testing indicate that our OSSLT plan is working and reflects admirably on our students, teachers, principals and parents.”

Paula Peroni, Chair of the Sudbury Catholic Board is also encouraged by the Literacy Test results stating that, “Our mandate as trustees in conjunction with senior administration at the Board has always been and will continue to be, to provide our students with the tools ands resources that they require to receive the best education possible. The very fact that our secondary schools show an 89 percent pass rate which is 5 percent higher than the Provincial average is proof that we are on the right track and will continue to improve on these results.”

St. Theresa Junior Boys, Handball Champs!

The St. Theresa Junior Boys won the Sudbury Catholic District School Board’s handball tournament recently held at St. Francis Catholic School. After dropping only one of their five games in the regular schedule, the boys went undefeated in the semifinal games to claim the championship.

Congratulations to the St. Theresa Catholic School boys handball team — well done!

Most Reverend Robert Harris Appointed Bishop of Saint John, New Brunswick

The Holy Father, Benedict XVI has recently announced the appointment of the Most Reverend Robert Harris, as Bishop of Saint John, New Brunswick. Since his episcopal ordination on December 12, 2002 until today, Bishop Harris has served as the Auxiliary Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Sault Ste. Marie.

Bishop Plouffe has declared “Bishop Harris will be missed by many in this diocese and personally, I am losing a very loyal and dedicated immediate collaborator. Even though his episcopal ministry among us was brief, we will always remember him for his kind and sensitive approach to people and challenges. We wish him well as he undertakes his new responsibilities and assure him of our prayers and most sincere gratitude.”

Bishop Harris becomes the twelfth Bishop of the Diocese of Saint John. Founded September 30, 1842 it is the seventh oldest Roman Catholic Diocese in Canada. Belonging to the Metropolitan See of Moncton, the Diocese serves a population of 115,400 Roman Catholic dispersed over a territory of 60,000 square kilometres, including seven counties and three principal regions: Saint John, Fredericton and Miramichi.

The fifty-eight parishes and thirty-two missions are served by 67 diocesan priests, 13 religious priests, 2 deacons, 1 religious brother and 139 religious women.

During his time in the Diocese of Sault Ste. Marie, Bishop Harris served as Vicar General, Co-ordinator of Pastoral Services (both English and French sectors), Associate Judicial Vicar of the Matrimonial Tribunal, Chancellor and Director of Vocations. At the level of the Ontario Conference of Catholic Bishops (OCCB) as well as the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishop (CCCB), Bishop Harris has served on several Episcopal Commissions, Councils and Committees.

The date of his installation will be announced in the near future.

Pius XII Catholic School Participates in ‘Mining Rocks’ Race

The Grade 2 and 3 students at Pius XII Catholic School participated in the ‘Sudbury Rocks Race’ in downtown Sudbury on Sunday, May 6, 2007. The one kilometre race started at the YMCA on Durham Street. The children ran down Durham to Beech Street around the corner to Elgin and back up Elgin Street to the YMCA.

The students at Pius XII Catholic school trained hard for more than a month for the race with representatives from the Running Room and have completed the Kids Fit fitness tests. The students’ fitness scores improved so remarkably that the Running Room suggested that the students enter the Sudbury Rocks Race which is also the qualifier for the Boston Marathon.

Proceeds from the race went to the Diabetes Foundation.

St. Francis Catholic School Presents “Wellness Day”

On May 1, 2007 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. the Grade 7 and 8 students at St. Francis Catholic School will be participating in a Wellness Day. Representatives from the Sudbury and District Health Unit as well as Life Zone will be presenting to the students on a wide range of topics from Healthy Eating and Nutrition, to Kickboxing classes.

SCDSB Celebrates 150 Years of Catholic Education

Sudbury Catholic District School Board teachers, parents, clergy and staff celebrated more than 150 years of Catholic Education in Ontario during its Institute for Catholic Education (ICE) Symposium held at Marymount Academy last week. The initiative is part of a campaign undertaken by the Board and its Partners in Education to increase the awareness of what Catholic Schools are really all about.

In his opening remarks, Barry MacDonald, SCDSB Trustee welcomed guests and took the opportunity to share his thoughts on Catholic Education “For more than a century and a half Catholic Schools have enriched communities through the education of students rooted in the gospel of Jesus Christ,” MacDonald told the capacity crowd of Catholic Educators. “Schools belonging to the Sudbury Catholic District School Board incorporate Catholic beliefs throughout all subject areas of the curriculum. Both individually and as members of interdependent teams, students are called to examine and evaluate their own contributions to physical, political, ethical, socioeconomic and ecological systems with an informed moral conscience as they learn to integrate faith with life. The English Catholic School system in Sudbury has proven to be a very successful one that provides a value added, faith-based quality education that meets or exceeds provincial standards for excellence and student achievement. By recognizing the diversity in our community and the Constitutional guarantees established to protect minorities, we will continue to provide the very best for our students now and in the future,” concluded MacDonald.

You are the guardians of Catholic Education,” Bagnato told her audience. “Every thing you do promotes, preserves and protects the children we love and that is why we are confident in saying that our schools are truly Schools To Believe In.”
