Franco-Fun Day Celebrated at St. Charles School

Things are alive and well at St. Charles Catholic Elementary School. On Tuesday, March 20th, as they celebrated “la journée de la francophonie” and fun was had by all.
The day started with M. Viau’s Gr. 7/8 French Immersion class who presented Improv skits to various classes.

Franco-Fun Day at St. John

On March 20th, French Immersion students at St. John’s school participated in a myriad of fun activities to celebrate Franco Fun Day along with millions of other French speaking people from around the world. Students and teachers alike had a wonderful morning while the Grade 3/4, 5/6 and 7/8 FI students visited the Dépatie Maple Sugar Farm. A Franco Fun time was had by all!

St. Bernadette Celebrates Franco-Fun!

Grace Olive, Grade 2 student at St. Bernadette Catholic French Immersion School, proudly waves the Franco-Ontarian flag she created in honour of La Journee Internationale de la Francophonie on March 20, 2012. St. Bernadette celebrated this day by highlighting the French language and culture through a variety of educational activities including: dancing and singing along to traditional Francophone music, sampling home made culinary French treats like “la sucre a creme” and “les petes de soeurs”, and wearing green and white (the official colours of the Franco-Ontarian flag). The celebration ended in the gym with the students coming together to cheer, “Le francais est une chance!”

Marymount Academy Celebrates Franco-Fun Day!

As part of the school’s Franco-Fun day at Marymount Academy, the entire student body gathered in the gym as Grade 8 immersion student Regan Horner sang O Canada in French, grade 11 student Kiana Wardell said the Notre Père prayer and then the grade 8 immersion class sang the unofficial Franco-Ontarian anthem, Notre Place. Many other Franco-Fun activities have been planned throughout the day!

SCDSB Elementary Schools Host Kindergarten Info/Registration Night

Parents and students had the opportunity on Tuesday, January 25to visit all Sudbury Catholic Elementary Schools to learn more about the Kindergarten and Early Learning programs being offered for September, 2011 Each school hosted an Information and Registration night and staff and Principals were on hand to answer questions about the English and French Immersion Programs in the schools and assisted in the registration process. Families went on tours of the school and learned more about the unique programming offered at all Sudbury Catholic Elementary Schools. Parents are reminded that registration is always ongoing and can contact either their local Catholic school to enrol their child(ren) or the Sudbury Catholic Board office at (705)-673-5620. St. Charles College Student Receives Significant French Immersion Scholarship

Alison Hunt, a grade 12 student from St. Charles College found out recently that she was the successful grant applicant for a $20,000 French Immersion scholarship from the University of Ottawa. After applying to the University for their International Development and Globalization program, Hunt received news that she was going to be receiving $5,000 a year for the next four years as long as she takes 60% of her courses in French. A French Immersion student for all of her schooling, Hunt didn’t really think about applying for any sort of French Immersion related scholarships. Her teacher, Rick Emond suggested to her that she might want to consider this option. Thankfully Hunt took his advice and her parents couldn’t be happier. “They are really excited for me,” Hunt said. “They know this is a fantastic opportunity for me and are really proud of me, especially since neither of them even speak French.” Hunt attributes a lot of her scholastic succes to Mr. Emond. “ He (Emond) has been there for me right from day one in Grade 9 and has encouraged me to stay in French Immersion right into Grade 12”. Emond says that he has always been very proud of Alison’s accomplishments as she has always been a very mature student who always went beyond what was required and always took extreme pride in her work. “Allison has always seen the importance of the Immersion program and never complained about the work that was involved,” Emond said. “She deserves this and part of me is envious of the opportunities that lie ahead of her as there is no doubt in my mind that she will make a difference in the world – when people talk about our students being our future, Alison will be one of the ones leading the way.” Hunt hopes to eventually work for a global charitable organization such as “Right to Play” and feels that continuing in her French will allow her more successful career opportunities.
