Oui, On Parle Francais!

The French Immersion students in Grades 3, 4, 5 and 6 at St. Bernadette Catholic School put their French speaking skills to the test during a recent trip to Wal-Mart to shop for ‘back to school’ items. The students have been working very hard in class to improve their second language skills. ‘I enjoyed myself a lot. I was very glad to experience speaking French in a real-life situation outside of the classroom!” said Meghan Danyluk, Grade 4.

Celebrating Franco-Fun at St. Andrew

The staff and students of St. Andrew Catholic Elementary School enjoyed an afternoon of fun on March 20 as part of the the board Franco-Fun Day. The day began with singing Oh Canada in french and then a short description of the Franco-Ontario flag. The Core French teacher Mme. Price arranged an afternoon of fun activities including Salut (bingo), Musical chairs, fait moi un design (drawing out a given french word from the word list), mon beau drapeau (design core french flags) escargot (hopscotch) and a short french cartoon. Mme. Price and her Mother-in-law made homemade petes de soeurs as a treat for everyone. This was a great day of community building as the older Core French students helped the younger primary aged students with all the activities. Pictured is Noah and his team as they played escargot.

“Game on” for Franco Fun Day at SCC

Francofun Day really did get fun and competitive with the help of board games at St. Charles College on March 20, 2014.  The students celebrated their French language and culture by playing The Game of Life/Destins, French Pictionary and Tic Tac Boom in teacher Anthony Malafarina’s Immersion class.

“This forced the students to converse and have fun while thinking about French language studies” said Malafarina.

The Franco Fun day was celebrated today by all Sudbury Catholic Schools in either Core French or Immersion classes.

Celebrating Franco-Fun days at St. John School

At St. John Catholic Elementary School, their activities for Franco-Fun day were spread over a three day period. On March 19th, their French Immersion FDK program created beautiful Franco-Ontarian flags and proudly waved them to show how lucky they are to learn a second language!
On March 20th, the school started off our morning announcements with music from the Franco-Ontarian group SWING followed by a few fun and interesting facts about the French language and culture across the world. The grade 1 & 2 French Immersion, grade 1 English and grade 5/6 English classes then had the opportunity to go out snowshoeing, led by Bradley Blackwell from the Killarney Centre’s outreach program. Through this activity, the younger students were able to learn about animals and their habitat. The older students were able to better understand the purpose of snowshoes and how important is was for French Settlers to build and maintain a friendship with the First Nation’s people if they were to survive when they arrived to this new land we now call Canada. Students were also encouraged to greet each other in the hallway in French throughout the day. Quelle belle journée!
On March 21st, all students at St. John School were given a button or tattoo that allowed them to show their support for French learning within the school community. They also attended a magic show in the gym with one of their own supply teachers, The Amazing René! The children and staff alike enjoyed the bilingual presentation and actively took part in the show. Vive la francophonie!

St. Francis Students Connecting Globally Through Reading

Students in teacher Lyanne Marion’s grade 5/6 French Immersion class at St. Francis Catholic Elementary School have been involved in the 2013 Global Read Aloud. Students have been listening to their teacher read “Out Of My Mind” by Sharon Draper, and have connected with classes from around the world, such as California, Brazil and India, through Twitter, Kidblog and Edmodo. This global project allows one book to connect the world!

Student also have iPad minis for a six week period, and are creating book trailers and Inclusion slideshows to share with the school community.

St. Raphael Catholic School Celebrates the Anniversary of the Franco-Ontarian Flag

St. Raphael Catholic Elementary School Core French teachers Lise McElree and Sabrina Rocca feel that it is important for students to learn the French language and culture. Students from the University of Sudbury created the Franco-Ontarian flag and it was unveiled for the first time on September 25, 1975. It has since become the emblem for the Ontario French-speaking community. It is important for students to understand the importance and symbolism of the flag and what it represents.

“On the emblem, green represents summer and white represents winter. Together the two colours represent the diversity of Ontario’s climate. The lily evokes the French-speaking community worldwide, whereas the trillium is the floral emblem of Ontario.” http://www.ofa.gov.on.ca
Students were encouraged to celebrate by wearing green and white.
