On Wednesday October 22, to celebrate October the month of the Queen of the Rosary, the teaching staff and students of St. Andrew School boarded 3 buses and went to visit the Grotto of Lourdes on Van Horne Street. The grade 3/4, 4/5 and 5/6 classes led the students, teachers and parents in a Living Rosary near the fountain. Once the rosary was recited each group took some time to visit the beautiful statues from France that depict the Way of the Cross and also the beautiful replica of the Grotto of Lourdes. Cardinal Can Total Crushed Once Again
St. Charles College and its feeder schools have collected more than 115 thousand cans to stock Sudbury Food Bank shelves during the winter months. This exceeds the goal to collect 60 thousand cans that the student council set at the beginning of the week.
Together with St. Raphael, St. Paul, St. Andrew, St. Bernadette, St. John, St. David and Pius, the Cards went door-to-door all over the city in pursuit of cans or cash.
The schools also teamed up with Q92 and Kiss FM to promote what has become the largest single donation to the Sudbury Food Bank in its history.
SCC Principal Patty Mardero says, “I congratulate every Card and future who went door-to-door these last few weeks so that people in this city can eat.”
Giving ‘BAC’ to the Community
The staff and students held their annual Memorial Walk in September. Part of the mandate is to give ‘BAC’ to the community. This year the school chose to donate parts of the proceeds from the walk to KICX for Kids charity.

Tomorrow, St. Charles College along with its feeder schools will know if they have crushed their can collecting goal. The school set out to collect 60 thousand cans in support of the Sudbury Food Bank this season as part of its annual collection blitz.
The high school is working in partnership with St. Paul, St. John, St. Bernadette, Pius, St. David, St. Raphael, St. Andrew Catholic Elementary schools. Student can collect a combination of canned foods and cash. Last year, they surpassed their goal by collecting more than 112 thousand cans.
The food drive began more than 25 years ago and its founder, former student Jim Szilva still takes part in the drive with his former high school. The school also teams up with Q92 and KISS 105.3 to Stuff a Bus full of food. The radio stations also broadcasted live from the school parking lot on the bus all week.
Tomorrow morning, the collection totals will be revealed and the food will then be transported to the Sudbury Food Bank warehouse.

Students from the seven schools spent last week going door-to-door to collect cans and other non-perishable food items to help the Sudbury Food Bank stock its shelves over the cold winter months.
Now the St. Charles College students begin their drive starting with their kick-off next Monday. Every year the high school teams up with Q92 and KISS 105.3 to Stuff a Bus full of food. The radio stations also broadcast live from the school parking lot during the week. The food is then transported to the Sudbury Food Bank warehouse.

Celebrating Thanksgiving at St. Andrew
At 1 pm on October 10th the students, staff and some parents of St. Andrew Catholic School took part in a Thanksgiving Prayer Service that was led by Mrs. Vervega and her grade 2 class. Everyone was reminded that God’s gifts are countless and His goodness is without limit. We all thanked God for our parents, families, friends, priests and teachers, and all people who try to make things better for us. The children sang songs of praise and gratitude. Everyone was reminded to take some time this weekend to thank God for all His blessings. Pictured are the grade 2 class at St. Andrew School.
Holy Cross Cubs Run for the Cure
This year was another great year for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure and none of it would have been possible without all of the teams who ran. 127,000 participants and volunteers came together on Run day and through the support of generous donors raised over $25 million for innovative breast cancer research, health education, and advocacy initiatives throughout Canada.
The Holy Cross Catholic Elementary School community put a team in again this year, and they collected $2374.00 towards this very worthy cause. Only a few of the members of the Holy Cross Cubs who came out for the run are pictured here. It was a great turn out for such a dreary day. Congratulations on helping to make a difference. Staff “En Pointe” for BACCSS’s Rooney and Dechaine Memorial Walk
As a result of Bishop Alexander Carter Catholic Secondary School’s successful Memorial Walk fundraiser in memory of former student Mackenzie Rooney (a student who died tragically in an ATV accident) and Dennis Dechaine, (a former teacher who lost his battle with cancer), both the principal and vice principal of the school had to honour their part of the challenge. Cassandra MacGregor and James Michaud, the school’s admin team showed up in their best ballerina wear as a result of the students fundraising exceeding their goal of $8000. To date, the school has raised over $9000 so far to go towards several different scholarship funds in both Rooney’s and Dechaine’s names, as well as to support several activities within the school that both Mackenzie’s parents and Dennis’s wife are involved with. To raise the money, the students canvassed the valley area over the past few weeks and the day of the walk involved a live broadcast from KICX radio, a prayer service, a Zumba warm up for the whole school, and an 8 km walk to celebrate the togetherness of the entire Bishop Carter school community. Joining them on the walk were members of both Mackenzie’s and Dennis’s families, as well as members of the Greater Sudbury Police Services. Principal Cassandra MacGregor was thrilled with the efforts of her students and staff. “We are a small school community with an enormous heart,” explained MacGregor. “We set our expectations really high when it comes to our students and staff, and they continually exceed these expectations! We are extremely proud of our students for surpassing our fundraising goal and it is wonderful that we can honour Mackenzie and Dennis, and their families with our outstanding efforts!”
