Life Skills Students at St. Benedict have been completing a variety of programs to give back to the planet! The class is in charge of the school’s recycling program and they have also initiated a water awareness campaign in which students sold reusable water bottles and made posters to explain the importance of using refillable water bottles! They will also complete a School yard clean up later in the Spring, encouraging their community to get involved!

St. James students care for baby chicks in their classrooms!
St. James students are looking after feathered friends to learn how to care for them! Dedicated Kindergarten teachers go to the school on Saturdays and Sundays to take care of the chicken, duck and quail eggs in the classroom incubators. The students have begun to spend time with the chicks in their classrooms and are excited to interact with them more in coming weeks!
Immaculate Conception students do their part to keep the environment clean and green!
Mrs Hayden’s Grade 1/2 class at Immaculate Conception showed they are caring, Catholic citizens by cleaning up the school yard today in celebration of Earth Day. They encourage everyone to do their part and pitch in to keep our Earth clean and healthy!
Students at St. James put a focus on the planet to celebrate Earth Day!
Grade 2 French Immersion students at St. James spent the day learning about nature and how to protect our planet. Earth Day was celebrated in Mrs Bozic’s class and students are spreading the message that we all need to be stewards of the Earth. They made beautiful bookmarks as well.
St. David School Students Plant 50 Evergreen Trees on New School Site
The staff and students of St. David Catholic School would like to publicly acknowledge Mr. Louis Belanger and the staff from Yallowega Belanger Salach Architecture for the donation of 50 evergreen trees for the new school site.
The staff at Yallowega Belanger Salach Architecture spent a morning preparing the soil for new trees and assisting the students in re-greening the new St. David School surroundings. The school would also like to thank school board trustees, Ray Desjardins and Nancy Deni for assisting the students in the tree planting activity.
Planting day started with heavy clouds and light rain. Once all trees were planted, a huge rainstorm ensued. The trees were naturally watered, the students, staff and community members were still dry and everyone felt wonderful about their contribution to the new school environment! The school’s next environmental project will be the creation of “Woodworking Club”, who will be building raised garden beds for the upcoming spring’s planting season — thank you Mr. Mailloux!
St. David School Celebrates Earth Day 2016
The students and staff at St. David Catholic School recognized this year’s Earth Day by “wild flower bombing” the new school site. St. David Catholic School will be moving to a brand new school in September 2016. The new school is located at 549 Frood Road, just a block away from their current school.
Teachers, students and staff members created wild flower bombs to prepare for the Earth Day celebration. Recycled paper, water and flowers seeds were mixed together to create “flower bombs”, then students and staff walked to the new school site to throw their “wild flower bombs” around exterior of the school site.
“We are excited to move to the new school and want to have a hand in creating a beautiful, welcoming school culture. This was a simple, fun way to contribute to the development of a natural setting around the school. We had fun creating the “wild flower bombs” and we had fun walking to the new site and throwing our creations. Now we patiently wait until September to move in.” stated Nancy Costanzi, St. David School Resource teacher.
Earth Day Meets Math at St. Charles College
Mrs. Narozanski’s grade 7 students used Earth Day to study population growth and decay in grade 7.
The students watched a film on the topic then looked at the math model used to determine trends in population growth. The students used M&M’s as their manipulative to understand the model simulating growth in a fish pond.
Mrs. Narozanski explains “We put two “fish” (M&M’s) in a cup and shook them out. If the M was face up, you had to add a “fish” to the group. Then students repeated this eight times to study the trend.”
Afterwards the students studied population decay with the chocolates. “They gently shook them out onto the desk. All fish with the M’s facing up were dead and students got to eat them. They recorded how many fish remained alive. Then repeated this eight times.”
Two students, Mercedes Wabanose and Jessica Gagnon, as pictured, realized through the process that fish were dying at a rapid rate and found the activity sad but fun.

St. Anne Students Are Stewards of the Earth
Students in Mlle. Prosser and Mme. Barriault’s (ECE) FDK FI outdoor discovery class at St. Anne Catholic Elementary School braved the cold winds and went outside and picked up the garbage around the school yard. The students were concerned about the environment, and wanted to make their school yard look nice and clean!
