Talent Beats Experience

This year’s Marymount Junior Regals Volleyball team began the season with little experience, a ton of talent and team spirit that was unrivalled. The team competed in numerous tournaments making it to the championship finals in four of six tournaments and capturing two Championships; the Champlain Tournament and the Cardinal Classic.

The Marymount Regals completed the regular season with an impressive 8-1 record to finish first in a very competitive field of ten teams. In addition, they defeated their toughest opponent, the Lasalle Lancers, in a close and exciting semi-final match to earn a spot in the City Championship. The Junior Regals represented Marymount Academy in a city volleyball championship for the 5th consecutive year.

The Lo-Ellen Knights would match up againstt the Regals in the final and were determined to beat the favoured Marymount Academy team. The Regals came out in the first set and showed the Knights they would have to play their best ball to bring down the young Regal squad as they were defeated 25 – 8. The Regal magic would continue as they dominated the match defeating Lo-Ellen in 3 straight sets to capture the coveted Division 1 Junior City Volleyball Championship.

Congratulations to the Junior Regals!

St. Charles College Students Try Out a New Sport in “Floorball”

The Ontario Federation of School Athletic Association (OFSAA), with the financial support of the Ontario Trillium Foundation, an agency of the Ontario Government, is again providing funding for 260 high schools across the Province to initiate a new sport or physical activity program into their school – St. Charles College is one of these lucky schools.

The “Try Day” programs are intended to introduce high school students to non-traditional sports or physical activities that may attract students who previously have not participated. This is the second year of a three-year grant program in which the Ontario Trillium foundation has provided up to $800 per school to assist schools with promoting these goals.

The funds will assist St. Charles College to help introduce “Floorball” to the Grade 9 to Grade 12 Physical Education Classes. “Floorball” is a non-contact team sport, the premise of the game is to direct the ball into the opposing team’s goal using a composite-fibre stick fitted with a plastic blade.

On October 1, 2008 the students of St. Charles College were provided with an opportunity to experience the “Floorball” sport at the school. Not many students were familiar with the sport at first but being a combination of the two most popular sports in Canada (hockey and soccer), many students showed excellent skills and the game quickly caught on.

“Floorball is an excellent alternative to Floor Hockey,” says St. Charles College, Physical Education Program Leader, Chantal Dagastino. “The big difference between the two is that the rules of floorball do not allow for any high sticking, stick contact or body contact, so the game tends to be less physical than Floor Hockey and more skill oriented and fast paced.

The Try Day event offered the St. Charles College students the opportunity to try a new sport and to see if it can be integrated into their physical education program. The sport was met with a great success as students were very active during their gym time and it helped promote a healtheir lifestyle.

B.A.C. To B. A.C. Wins

It seems like just yesterday that Bishop Alexander Carter Catholic Secondary School opened its doors to students of the Valley East Region. However, in five short years, the school’s reputation has quickly grown in the area and it is known by students as the place to be – next year’s projected enrolment boasts a student population of more than 440 students.

There are many factors that can be attributed to the success of Bishop Carter in such a short time period. One of the more prominent reasons being that the school specializes in many areas but it cannot be denied that its athletic programs have certainly grown in depth, breadth and spirit over the last few years. Bishop Carter Catholic Secondary School is particularly proud of its senior hockey team as they won the City Championship againstt Espanola in their division.

Coached by Mr. Dave Fabiilli and managed by Mr. Dan Grandbois, the team had very little time to play and build together, however the Gators proved that winning a championship requires more than just skill. To accomplish this amazing task the boys demonstrated a lot of heart, talent and above all a love for the game.

The boys’ hockey team also competed in the York University Senior Springfest Tournament in Toronto and once again the team was successful in claiming the championship, but this time at the provincial level. The Gators learned that when they become determined and put their minds and souls into their game anything is possible. Not to be outdone, on the hard court, the Bishop Carter Gators Junior Boys Basketball team won the Junior Boys NOSSA Championship division as well. The team was coached by Mr. Sean Gilroy. The boys had less than a year to develop and grow as a team but that was all that was needed to come home with the N.O.S.S.A. medal.

The Sudbury Catholic District School Board would like to take this opportunity to congratulate both the Bishop Carter hockey and basketball teams!

There’s a lot of Heart at St. Raphael Catholic School!
