The Marymount Regals Senior Volleyball team achieved their season long goal of qualifying for the girls provincial volleyball championships. The hard work, determination and team spirit displayed by the Regals lead them to become NOSSA champions this past weekend. The Regals finished first in the SDSSAA with a regular season of 8-1. They were silver medallists in the City Championship and earned the berth to the NOSSA “A” championship in Sturgeon Falls. During Round robin Competition the Regals went undefeated, not dropping a single set to their competitors. The Regals advanced to the Championship Final where they faced Algonquin from North Bay. The game was tight but Marymount fought hard, point for point and finally defeated the Barons in two straight sets 25-20, 26-24 to capture the coveted NOSSA banner. Good luck goes out to the Marymount Senior Girls Volleyball Team as they depart on Sunday March 7th for Kenora to compete at the “A” OFSAA championship

Olympic Family Literacy Day at St. Mary
Family Literacy Day had an Olympic Theme at St. Mary Catholic School in Capreol. Students were able to use computers to search for answers to a scavenger hunt, decorate and then eat “medal” cookies, learn about the Olympic Rings and then create their own symbols to represent peace through sports, and also learn about the four Olympic mascots by utilizing the Smartboard and viewing video clips. But the best part of the day was seeing the Olympic Torch from the Torch Relay and one of the 12,000 torch bearers! James Callaghan, son of Steve Callaghan Chaplain at St. Charles College, visited with the students and staff in his Torch Relay regalia. James was a torch bearer in Collingwood on December 29, 2009. He showed video clips of his run and shared pictures of his brother, Nick, who was a torch bearer in Sault Ste. Marie. The 2010 Olympic Torch Relay is presented by Coca-Cola and RBC, and James was honoured to have been selected a torch bearer through the Coca-Cola contest he entered. James was chosen based on his extensive community involvement and an essay he wrote. James brought the torch so that students and staff could see and hear about the sacred history of the Olympic Flame, symbolizing the principles of peace, brotherhood and friendship. Every student had the opportunity to carry the Torch – what a thrill! Each student is now eagerly looking forward to the 2010 Winter Olympic Games; they feel as if they have a personal connection to the games.
Valley East Schools Compete at Knights of Columbus Free Throw Competition
Students from the Valley East area participated in the second level of the Knights of Columbus Free Throw Competition on January 28, 2010. Students from Immaculate Conception, St. Anne, St. Mary as well as from other boards came together at Immaculate Conception Catholic Elementary School bringing all of their best “free throw skills” to win a chance to move on to the District Free Throw Championship. Students who came in first at their school level competition were invited to participate againstt the best of the best in the Valley area. Richard Rivais,a member of the Knights of Columbus, has been involved with this competition for the past ten years. Rivais was joined by other Knights including Yvan Gunville, Michael Frawley and Bernie Shank who helped run the event. The Knights also had Rivais’ daughter Tracy Rivais and son-in-law Sean Preseau on hand to help with the running of the competition. The winners who placed first at this competition will participate at the District Championship. In the event that the first place winners are unable to compete, the second place winners are given the chance to participate at the final competition. St. Andrew Catholic Elementary Celebrates Hockey Sweater Spirit Day
Staff and students of St. Andrew Catholic Elementary School celebrated Hockey Sweater Spirit Day and invited special guests to the school to join them in reading. Dan Maggio, John Kurtz, Steven Reese, Marcus Foligno and Ben Chiarot of the Sudbury Wolves took the time to come to the school and share the joy of reading with the students and staff. Each Sudbury Wolf player read to three groups of students and had time to answer questions, sign autographs and take some photos. The staff believes that students need to see and hear a variety of people reading to and with them and these gentlemen certainly fit the bill. As the saying goes…”variety adds spice to life.”!
St. Benedict Hosts Annual Bear’s Classic
St. Benedict Catholic High School hosted it’s annual Bears Classic Boys Elementary Basketball tournament this past weekend. Twelve teams entered and battled for top spot over two days of play. In the end, the Algonquin Tigers were the tournament champions. The SCDSB top team was the St. Francis “A” Team who placed third with a bronze medal finish and had two of its team members making the all-star team – Kordell Simmonds and Tate Kosmerly. Congratulations to all participants and to St. Benedict for another successful tournament!
KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS “FREE THROW” COMPETITION
What a way to kick off the new year! Students at Immaculate Conception Catholic School enjoyed participating in the yearly “Knights of Columbus FREE THROW Competition” on January 5th, 2010. Fun was had by all. The Knights of Columbus Council 7368 are dedicated to our community. Each year, they conduct the “Free Throw” competition in 7 local schools in Valley East. The winners will participate in the Regional Competition to be held at Immaculate Conception School on January 28th.
St. Theresa Champions of the SCDSB Junior Co-ed Volleyball Tournament
The Sudbury Catholic District School Board Junior Co-ed volleyball tournament was hosted this past weekend by St. Francis Catholic Elementary School. The results of the tournament are:
1st place – St. Theresa Catholic Elementary School
2nd place – Corpus Christi Catholic Elementary School
3rd place – St. Francis Catholic Elementary School
4th place – St. Raphael Catholic Elementary School.
Eight teams in total participated in the tournament. Congratulations to all the teams for a great competition!
Goals for Girls Ball Hockey Tournament Outstanding Success
With smiles and cheers, the staff and students of Marymount Academy wrapped up another successful Goals for Girls Ball Hockey tournament on November 19, 2009. This ninth annual event included over twenty teams involving nearly two hundred students and staff. The Goals for Girls campaign is held to encourage young women to be physically active and to help them recognize and become involved in the many activities and opportunities available in their school and community. As well, this tournament is also a fundraiser in which monies raised are used to sponsor young women who cannot financially afford to play sports, to purchase fitness equipment and to provide financial support to other community schools and programs whose female programs are severely underfunded. Money is also donated on behalf of the staff and students of Marymount to SportLink, a community based organization that promotes local athletics. Dan Bartolucci, program leader at Marymount Academy and organizer of the event feels it is very important that the focus of the day is understood by the students. “Ultimately the girls really understand that the day is a positive one for their school, their peers and also themselves.” he said. “This tournament helps encourage the young women of this community to set their own personal goals and strive to achieve them.” Alex Tsimiklis, Co-President of the school’s Girls Athletic Association says it’s a fantastic and fun day. “It is a great way for girls to get involved in their school, “ states Tsimiklis. “The money goes to a great cause and it ensures there are opportunities for everyone.” This year, Marymount raised over $3500 to support this campaign.
Pius XII Students Try Out New Sports
Students at Pius XII Catholic School participated in the “Try-it” Parasport Clinic recently.
During the clinic students were provided with a specific sport and an equipment demonstration of different types of sports activities, such as basketball, hockey, bocce and curling. The importance on being “physically fit” was also emphasized throughout the clinic.
Susan Levesque with SportLink Greater Sudbury Sport Council lead a Parasport clinic with the Pius XII students. Numerus classes including the Special Education class participated in wheelchair basketball, sledge hockey, bocce and curling.
The Pius students were able to experience what it feels like to be in a wheel chair, and they quickly realized that it was possbile to participate in many sports activities through the use of a specially designed equipment.
