Trillium “Try Day” Program at Marymount Academy

On Monday, May 3, 2010 grade 7 and 8 students at Marymount Academy kicked off Catholic Education Week with a Trillium “Try Day” program. The day-long Floorball Tournament has been funded through a campaign from OFSAA called the Trillium “Try Day” School Program, supported by the Ontario Trillium Foundation. Through this program, OFSAA grants up to $800 for schools to implement new or non-traditional sporting events or physical activities into the physical education program at the school. The grant money allows schools to purchase equipment, resource materials, clinics, facility rental and transportation for programs that are new to the school and students. This is a great opportunity to help motivate students toward incorporating physical activity into their lifestyle, in the hopes of producing healtheir, more active young people and adults.
Marymount Academy was selected to be a part of this “Try Day” school program for the 2009/2010 school year. The new sporting event that will be conducted is Floorball, which is a combination of hockey and soccer, the 2 most popular sports in Canada. Floorball is a fun, quick, and active sport that provides a great workout in a friendly environment. Cassandra MacGregor, Vice Principal of the school said that it was a great opportunity for the students to develop team spirit. “As well, it is a great way for the students to try out a new sport while getting their daily physical activity.” said MacGregor.

St. Benedict Holds Classes Over March Break

St. Benedict would like to thank The Basketball Academy, and the Sudbury Youth Basketball League, for a successful St. Benedict March Break Basketball Camp.

During the break, students from grades 5 and up, were back in the classroom at St. Benedict, learning to improve their game. Head Coach Aaron Sidenberg and his Basketball Academy staff focused on fundamentals, high intensity training on the court, sports specific training in the weight room, and the use of sports technology in the classroom.

Students were impressed with the large staff on hand that was able to work one on one with players of all ages. Sidenberg and his staff of past and present L.U. players, and coaches, reenforced team building throughout the 3 day power camp.
All players were given vertical and strength training program, along with detailed video analysis of their shooting using Smart Board technology. The hard work of the staff combined with the diversity of the camp, made a huge impact with all the students in attendance. There are plans for another camp very soon.

St. Theresa Students “Zumba for Haiti”

Students from St. Theresa Catholic Elementary School had the opportunity to try something new and exciting on Wednesday, March 10, 2010. All of the classes had a chance to experience the exciting new exercise called Zumba which is a Latin inspired fitness class with a hip-hop flavour. The students had been trying to figure out something different for them to do to raise money for the people of Haiti and the idea of bringing in donations of any amount for a chance to try Zumba was the one idea that everyone agreed was the best. Zumba instructor Lori Mitchell from Lori Mitchell Fitness visited the school and had all of the classes join her in the gym to try some of the different Zumba moves. Maria DeMarco, Principal of the school enjoyed watching the students take part in the classes as well as trying out the moves herself. “It is a great way for the kids to get their daily physical activity.” said DeMarco. “As well, the school is able to promote physical fitness while supporting a really great cause like Haiti!”

First Annual Winter Outdoor Adventure Race Showed SCDSB High School Students Made of the “Right Stuff”

It couldn’t have been a more beautiful day on Friday, March 5, 2010 when the high school students from the Sudbury Catholic Board arrived in Killarney for the first annual Winter Outdoor Adventure Race. Nine teams from St. Benedict, St. Charles College and Bishop Alexander Carter showed up at the Killarney Shebanoning Outdoor Environmental Education Centre (K.S.O.E.E.C.) ready to participate in the three part race consisting of a two kilometre run along a trail with a target shooting event (with hoops and snowballs), an orienteering exercise in the bush, as well as a controlled fire-burning activity in which the students had to bring a can of water to a full boil over their self-made fire. The teams were mostly in co-ed groups of three and had to stay together for all three legs of the race. In the end, when all of the points and penalties were tallied, a team from St. Benedict consisting of – Alex Catalano, Sebastian Diebel, Andrew Kendall, with a time of one hour, thirteen minutes and twenty-four seconds was the race champion. It was an absolutely amazing day for all of the students and staff who participated and because the day was such a huge success, the buzz for the next race, which is the Second Annual Spring Adventure Race, has already begun. This next race will be held on June 4, 2010 and will be open to teams from all four boards. Space is limited and teams will be registered on a first-come, first-serve basis.
