“Heart Heroes” Make A Difference At St. Anne Catholic Elementary School

Primary and Junior students at St. Anne School in Hanmer questioned teacher, Mrs. Desmarais. “What is a Heart Hero?” Mrs. Desmarais’ response was that a Heart Hero was anyone that wanted to help keep all kid’s hearts strong and healthy. She outlined to students how they could work together to make a difference not only to their own health, but to the future of healthy hearts everywhere. Those words were all that the Catholic Board students needed to hear. In association with the Heart and Stroke Foundation, the elementary students participated in the “Jump Rope for Heart” fundraiser.

The students prepared for the event by raising pledges. Next, they began a campaign of improving their skipping skills and stamina during gym classes and recesses. A skipping “phenomena” took over the school. The school administration and teachers helped with the excitement by offering incentives for students with the most pledges. Goals of $1000.00 to $5000.00 or more would result in students being able to throw pies at staff members in front of the entire student body. Mr. Guy Mathieu, the school principal, stated, “The amount of enthusiasm that has been generated with this fundraiser is incredible! I am always amazed at the school spirit demonstrated by the students, not only with their efforts in bringing in pledges, but also at their enthusiasm within the gym at the actual pie throwing contest.” All money amounts raised are put to good use by the Heart and Stroke Foundation. A pledge of as little as $5.00 can be used to purchase test tubes for lifesaving research, while funds of up to $150.00 can be used to buy a blood pressure monitor to keep patients healthy.

The fundraising activity was a huge success! More than $5000.00 was raised. A school assembly will be held in June where staff members will keep their promises to the St. Anne “Heart Heroes.” Even though the Jump Rope for Heart fundraiser is over, school skipping ropes are still in demand by students in all grade levels. The Sudbury Catholic Board students have learned, “They can make a difference in the lives of others!” Way to go Angels!

Bustin’ a Move and Finding Their Groove

Regardless of ability and age, every student at St. Raphael School is getting into the Zumba craze this month.  All the students are participating in five Latin dance classes with two certified instructors.

Zumba will be part of the student daily physical activity at the school.  The Ministry of Education states:  “The goal of daily physical activity is to instill the habit of activity and enable all elementary students to be active on a daily basis in order to maintain or enhance their physical fitness, their overall health and wellness, and their ability and readiness to learn.”

It’s all a part of becoming a healthy school on the move.  The school is being recognized by the Healthy Schools Recognition Program.  It is a Ministry of Education initiative that awards schools going above the call of duty when it comes to the promotion of healthy living and eating.

Marymount Academy Girls Hockey Division Two Champions!

Recently the Marymount Academy Girls Hockey Team won the Division Two championship series in two straight games over Lasalle.  The first game was all Regals as Maddy Pos scored all six goals in a 6 -1 win.  The second game was much closer due to Marymount missing a key player, Lindsey Castonguay.  The final game had a scoreless first period and then Lasalle scored two goals in the second period to lead by two heading into the third.  With 5 minutes left in the game the Regals got on the board when Maddy Pos found the back of the net making it 2 -1.  Then Emily Herbert tied the game up with just over a minute left in the third to send the game into sudden-death overtime and save the day.  Overtime only lasted a few minutes when Maddy Pos became the hero and does what she does best by rushing end-to-end and sc oring the winning goal. Congratulations Regals!!

Bear’s Lessard makes GTA All-Star Roster

St. Benedict football player Erick Lessard will be playing in the GTA all-star football game on Sat April 17th at McMaster University. Lessard, who attended an evaluation camp during the Bears bye week, made the Greater Toronto Area top 100 list. Although he had an early injury in another mini-camp, he was selected as one of the top 45 players.

Locally, Erick was an unanimous selection for SDSSAA all-star, at Offensive Tackle and was one of 4 Bear offensive linemen selected as an all star. Emilio Frometa, Spencer Dailey, and Lineman of the Year, Carter Long, were also selected. Erick helped the Bears return to the playoffs with a 5-3 record, ousting defending champs Notre-Dame, before losing to the eventual city champions, Lasalle.

Known as “Lizard” to his teammates, Erick is blessed with pro size (6’7″, 300 lbs) and has a great work ethic. He impressed coaches at the McMaster “Up Front” Offensive Linemen Camp, and scouts at the All-Pro football camp. Head coach Frank Rocca praises his big lineman, “A physical specimen, and an honour roll student, you don’t find that combo too often. The transformation since his Gr. 9 year has been truly remarkable, just scratching the surface of what he can really do.”

Rocca explains that Lessard has benefited from seeing other Bears going off to play university football both in the CIS, and NCAA. “The path has been set by others over the years, so he knows what he has to do to get there. He has written SAT’s, has a personal trainer and travels to compete againstt the best. For us at St. Benedict, he really stepped up as a leader this year.”

Erick agrees, “It’s nice to be recognized for all the hard work that I am putting in. I owe it to my coaches. I’m pretty lucky to have a head coach who has gone off to play DIV 1 in the NCAA, and also play pro in the CFL. Coaches are surprised to find out that I know zone blocking techniques, and all the calls to go with it. It makes me that more marketable.”

Erick has taken the year off from basketball to focus his off season training at T2 Training Systems at The Gym. “Training all summer gave him such a huge advantage with power and strength, coming into this season. This year he lined up on the ball with great confidence. Combine that with solid fundamentals and great technique, and that makes for a very overwhelming figure for the opposition” said Rocca.

Erick will look to add a few more camps over the summer to further increase his stock. Some coaches have commented that Erick could be one of the top recruits coming out of highschool, period. When asked about the amount of schools contacting the well natured Lizard, Rocca replied with a grin, “This is just the beginning for this kid.”

Marymount Attends “Guts and Glory”

On Friday, October 22nd, members of the Marymount Academy Girls’ Athletic Association and various athletes from different grade levels attended the 4th Annual “Guts & Glory” fundraiser luncheon put on by SportLink Sudbury. This year’s event featured two local athletes – Alannah Maclean, an OFSAA gold medallist in Nordic skiing and Mike Coughlin, a triathlete who now calls Sudbury home. The keynote speaker was Ken Derrett who is the current VP of Marketing for the San Diego Chargers from the National Football League. At the luncheon, the girls listened to courageous stories about all of the hard work and dedication it takes to become an elite athlete. Mr. Derrett focused his energy on outlying an important “toolkit” to persevere in athletics. He spoke about the importance of education and staying current with what is going on in the world. Furthermore, he added that “having respect for all of the people who surround you on a consistent basis, will help greatly in guiding your athletic journey, whatever it may be.” The Marymount Athletic Association and the students & staff who attended would like to extend a sincere thanks to Faiella Financial for generously donating the tickets to once again attend this great event.
