Inaugural Cubs and Bears Junior Co-ed Volleyball Tournament

On December 9th, Holy Cross Catholic Elementary School held its first Junior Coed Volleyball Tournament. This tournament was run in collaboration with St. Benedict Catholic Secondary School.
Newly dubbed the “Cubs and Bears Junior Co-ed Volleyball Tournament”, there was a total of 15 teams entered with a round robin in three pools with the top 2 teams in each pool advancing to the finals (also included the top two 3rd place teams advancing as well to the quarter finals).

The results are as follows: Gold medal winners Holy Cross 2 coach Mr. Gallien.
Silver medallist St. James A team coach Mr. Lariviere
Bronze medallist St. Anne B team coaches: Mrs. Mazerolle and
Mr. Merigioli
Fourth place finalist St. Paul coaches: Mrs. Valiquette and Stacey Vendramin

This was history in the making as it is the first year of existence for Holy Cross Catholic Elementary School and were able to have four teams entered in this tournament. This is the first of many types of tournaments that will run as a joint effort.

Bishop ACCSS Student Jumps to New Heights

Bishop Alexander Carter Catholic Secondary School student Leah Blanchette is quite a busy girl. Not only is she a dedicated student, she is also quite an accomplished equestrian whose dedication to her sport takes up quite a bit of her time outside of school as well. According to her mother, Kate Blanchette, Leah is a quiet girl and “knowing Leah, not many realize her accomplishments as she is so modest about her success.”

Leah completed on the “A” circuit national level the past season and that has meant a lot of time away from home and school with her coach Cathy Inch. Leah and her horse Jinjovan AKA “Joe” train out of Foothills Farm in Chelmsford. Most days involve at least 10 to 12 hours of practice, or showing in the ring and Leah spends at a minimum 5 days a week with Joe and her coach.

Leah and Joe have qualified for the Royal Winter fair, which is the Canadian Equestrian championships, to be held in Toronto starting Nov 2nd. Not only have they qualified, but they have managed to be pinned in all 4 of their divisions (Junior Hunter, A equitation, Junior Medal, and Jump Canada Medal) and they will go to nationals with finishing their qualifying season overall 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place standing. The Royal Winter fair is Canada’s premier equestrian show and is a platform for future Canadian Olympians as well as internationally known champions. Equestrian sport is the only Olympic sport where both men and women compete as equals.

Dave Soehner, principal of Bishop Alexander Carter Catholic Secondary School is extremely proud of Leah. “We are blown away by Leah’s dedication and passion for her sport,” Soehner said. “ We support her efforts 100% as she embodies the true Gator spirit, and wish her the best of luck with her upcoming championship.”

While she is competing, her trips in the ring can be watched on the Royal Winter Fair website, live feed. Leah and Joe will be in the ring on Friday Nov. 2, 3rd and again for Jump Canada finals on Nov 6th.

Go St. James Go! Run Scott Run!

Pumped up by the cheers of his friends and teachers, St. James Bear Scott Chandler gives it his all at the finish line of the 4th Annual Laurentian University Cross-Country Challenge. Held on a beautiful sunny day in September, St. James was thrilled to send more than 95 students from Grades 3 – 8 to this exciting event. The enthusiasm of students to participate in the Junior 1.8 km race and the Senior 3.1 km race inspired St. James Staff to continue their promotion of life-long fitness and healthy living.

Ensuring Bike Safety for Students in Killarney

One of the major signs of summer is the visible presence of bikes on the roads. This is the same in Killarney. To ensure the safety of all of her students, St. Joseph Catholic Elementary teacher Irene Dembek invited O.P.P. officer Rodney Petroski and Sudbury and District Health Unit Health Promotion Worker Daniel Prévost into the school to talk about bike safety. All of the school’s students were encouraged to bring their bikes in and each bike was inspected to ensure a safe ride for the student. “With all of my students, I want to ensure that their safety is first and foremost,” Dembek stated. “With our community partnerships with the Ontario Provincial Police and the Sudbury and District Health Unit, we work together to make sure our students understand the importance of bike and road safety – it is something I do every year.”

St. Charles College Hockey Hopeful- One to Watch For

He’s just a fourteen year-old St. Charles College student but he’s already dreaming big.  Cameron Lizotte hopes to one day see his NHL jersey grace the walls of the St. Charles College gymnasium and he’s hoping his big break next month might put those wheels in motion.

Lizotte has been selected as one of the top 42 bantam-aged hockey players in Canada by the National Hockey League Players’ Association hosted by former NHLer Gary Roberts.  The title means he has been invited to the second annual Allstate All-Canadian Mentorship Camp working with some of the best in the NHL.

Cameron says many of the players who participate in the program become first round draft picks in the Western and Ontario Hockey Leagues when they turn fifteen years of age.

Lizotte is one of two northern Ontario boys participating in the Mentorship Camp from July 17th to the 21st.  The other is Blake Speers of Sault Ste. Marie.  The week will conclude with an exhibition game that will be broadcast nationally on TSN Saturday, July 21st at 1 p.m. 

Lizotte currently plays for the Copper Cliff Redmen.  In August, he’ll represent Team Canada’s under-16 team in Austria. 

St. Ben’s Pulls Out All the Stops!

Members of the St. Benedict Championship Boys Football team recently participated in the 1st annual Crime Stoppers Fire Truck pull. Our Bears sure made quite the impact in the event!

The Bears were in 3rd place after the 1st heat, but in the second heat, the team posted the fastest time of the event.
The Bears captured the award for most team spirit, but ended up finishing 2nd, only losing the 1st place trophy by two tenths of a second.
St. Benedict’s Principal, Laura Kuzenko, and Benny the St. Benedict Bear, present a cheque at the event for $500 to members of the Sudbury Rainbow Crime Stoppers’ team – Brook Johnston, Office and Event Coordinator and Bert Lapalme, Police Coordinator.

Congratulations goes out to all team members. The Bears hope to make the event an annual tradition.

St. Raphael School helps rule out Diabetes and Participates in Sudbury Rocks!

On Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 13, students from St. Raphael School participated in the 5K Sudbury Rocks! run/walk for Diabetes. Students trained after school to prepare for the run. Eighteen students and Teacher Ms. Reynolds ran on Sunday. Students were also encouraged to collect pledges for this worthy cause. Over $1340.00 was collected by the Royals to help rule out Diabetes! It was a great way to help the community and to keep fit and stay healthy!

Jump Rope for Heart at St. Christopher

St. Christopher students are actively participating with their “Heart Hero” in the Jump Rope for Heart event taking place at the school on May 18th, 2012. Students are learning about keeping their heart healthy and also collecting pledges for a good cause, the “Heart and Stroke Foundation”. The following are some of our jump rope demonstrators from the grade 5 class and our “Heart Hero” Jamila Sargeant who is in grade 6.
