The Royal Canadian Legion was at St. Anne Catholic Elementary School to celebrate the many winners of the Remembrance Day Poster and Essay Contest. Tyler Rideout, Grade 8 Student won the Gold Medal for his Remembrance Day Essay. The school community came together to congratulate Tyler and had the pleasure of hearing Tyler’s very moving essay first hand. Tyler’s essay has now been submitted Provincially.

Students Excel at Board Wide Science Fair
The Sudbury Catholic District School Board held a Board Wide Science Fair on March 7, 2019 at St. Charles College.
The fair included 40 projects which were presented by students in Grade 7 and 8. Scientists from Science North attended the event to serve as judges. Project topics included: exploring the human body, radiation, plant growth experiments, nutrition and much more!
The winners of this year’s Science Fair were as follows:
First Place: A Brighter Idea, Isabella Pandolfo (Marymount Academy)
Second Place: The Medi Talk, Hayley Wood (Marymount Academy)
Third Place: Does Colour Affect the Sense of Taste, Jack Clauson (St. Charles College)
The top eight projects will proceed to the Regional Science Fair on April 6, 2019 at Laurentian University.
Holy Cross Students Create Faith-Based Boxes
Students at Holy Cross school have created ‘God Boxes’ out of cards. The students designed and created the boxes themselves. The God Box is then filled with tangible things that remind the children what to thank God for, and what to pray for. Each student personalized their own box, and were encouraged to bring these boxes home, and continue to fill them with new hopes and prayers.
Each box also had a special letter attached. Father’s Love Letter” is a paraphrased compilation of bible verses that is presented in the form of a letter from God to his children.
Parent Involvement Committee Hosts Successful Carousel Event!
The annual Carousel event hosted by the Parent Involvement Committee occurred on March 5, 2019 at St. David School. We were happy to welcome parents, educators and community partners alike throughout the evening of learning and networking.
This year, Carousel topics included: Dealing with Anxiety, Indigenous Education Programming, Coding, Mathematics, The Leader in Me, Supporting Students with Autism, Human Trafficking, Vaping Building Resilience, speech and language services and special Education Services, including the IEP.
Special thanks to all presenters and the Parent Involvement Committee for organizing such an informative and engaging event!
Students and Staff take a stand against bullying!
Staff and students wore their favourite pink shirts to celebrate #PinkShirtDay. Pink Shirt Day is celebrated each February to take a stand against bullying and promote inclusivity.

2019 Carousel Topics
St. Benedict marks National Flag Day
Today marks National Flag Day of Canada and there were big plans to celebrate with a smudge and prayer service this morning at St. Benedict School but then there was a bus cancellation day.
The service did take place however it was very intimate and interactive with fewer students in the hallways.Chaplain, Rob Pappin honoured the territory and led the service while the students held up a very special Canadian flag. The flag was given to St. Benedict through former Member of Parliament Diane Marleau’s office. It originally flew on Parliament Hill from the Peace Tower.
Staff and Students ring in the Chinese New Year at St. Charles College
The Chinese New Year was fully embraced at St. Charles College on February 5th, 2019, where staff and students came together as a school community dressed in red to celebrate. The students received beautifully red wrapped mandarin oranges from the breakfast club, which symbolizes good luck and friendship in the Chinese culture.
A traditional lunch, which consisted of dumplings, pork rice, spring rolls and almond cookies was served to students in the English Café, a club for all international students. New Year festivities will continue during the month of February at lunch for students to participate and learn about various traditions of the Chinese culture. Workshops on calligraphy, dragon art and a friendly chopstick competition will be held in the learning commons. These workshops will be led by our international students and partners in the community like the YMCA and Laurentian University’s international student program.
St. Benedict Celebrates Chinese New Year
The Chinese new year began as a day to pray to the Gods for spring harvest and good planting and while there is no spring weather yet here in Sudbury, the celebrations were in full force. Students were encouraged to dress down and wear red clothing.
Mrs. Church also put on a Chinese new year celebration in her classroom complete with all the fixings which included food, a portrait wall and loot bags complete with chocolate coins for good luck.
