St. Francis staff and students celebrated Literacy Day and their love of books with its annual book swap organized by the school’s resource teacher, Ms. G. Visentin. Staff and students kicked off the special event arriving to school dressed as their favourite story book character. Students donated gently used books from their home and traded them in for “new” books. The school’s cafeteria had a large selection of book titles on display for students to choose from in both English and French languages. The book swap provided an excellent opportunity for students to exchange books and encourage reading.

St. Benedict Starts the Bell Lets Talk Conversation
Today, students in the grade 7 and 8 wing at St. Benedict planned for a tough conversation they might experience in the future.
The students completed response texts in the event that someone reaches out to them about their mental health to look for support.
The students also talked about taking negative and unwanted words out of their vocabulary when it comes to dealing with mental health.

Sudbury Catholic Schools participate in exciting coding workshop!
Many of our schools had the opportunity to participate in coding workshops this week with university instructor, keynote speaker and bestselling author Brian Aspinall! Grades 4/5 students and 7/8 students and teachers came together as they co-learned about the link between computational thinking and problem solving in math through coding.
Brian Aspinall provided a hands on workshop for the students and teachers to engage in and even provided ways to fit the training into classroom curriculum!
“The workshop was amazing! I’m watching the students become immersed in learning, while I make connections to the curriculum at the same time!” Amanda, St. Francis.

Calming the mind, body and soul before secondary exams at St. Benedict!
For the month of January, the school staff have been focusing on mental health and managing the stress of exams which begin on January 25, 2018. The staff have tackled stress from all angles of mind, body and soul. There have been yoga sessions, a presentation by Canadian Mental Health and today therapy dogs.
The therapy dogs were brought in to help the students de-stress and smile ahead of exams.
The event was arranged by Christine Guerra, the school librarian with the organization, Magical Paws.
This has become common practice at Universities and in health institutions such as seniors’ homes and even in hospitals.
The dogs were so well received that staff are already toying with the idea of a return in the Spring ahead of exams in June.
